*Ladies only*What nice things did your Mum do when you started your periods?

  • My mam was always very open and factual so I knew all about my miraculous womb lining well in advance. She had supplies of pads and skinny tampons all ready so that I could try a few things and work out what suited me. I remember a false alarm when I was 11 and looked down the loo to see that the paper looked red. I got all excited then remembered that I'd dropped a kit kat wrapper down the toilet before I'd had a wee! Gutted!

When my little cousin started her periods she decided to try some of the Tampax applicators that girls were given in school. She came toddling down the stairs walking like John Wayne and declared to her mam that she 'couldn't get away with these tampon thingies'.....she hadn't bothered reading the part of the instructions about pulling out the cardboard tube after insertion.
  • I was made to feel sub human in a way! Not a nice time in my life and not handled well at all.
I love the earleir post about being left a big bar of chocolate! I want to do soemthing liek that for my daughter - make her feel like it's a special time not something to feel ashamed about. x

My sister told me that tampons were pronounced "tampooons"

My first "proper" ;) boyfriend used to pronounce them as tampoons as well - I never had the heart to correct him!!

I love this thread - some really nice stories but also some sad ones. My Mum was 41 when she had me so was in her 50's by the time I started at 12 so she left it up to my then 17 year old sister. She was very embarrassed by that whole side of life and we never really ever talked about things. She was a great Mum, just very old-fashioned. I remember not being allowed to watch "Within these Walls" after some sort of kissing scene!!!

I also used to make pads out of cotton wool and toilet paper through sheer embarrassment about asking for supplies and it actually makes me feel better, even after 34 years , to know that other girls were in the same position!

When I was about 10 I started writing to a penpal in America and when a letter arrived it was always passed round the whole family - Mum, Dad, sister, brother........ Imagine my horror when at about age 12 she asked if I'd started, said she had and then drew little pictures of pads & tampons to show me what she used :o. After that we exchanged little notes folded up separately..........!!

My DD is 11 and starting to develop so I'm sure it won't be long - she's definitely well-prepared and we talk about it openly. I also have a cupboard full of various pads and tiny sized tampons so no toilet paper pads for her!!
  • I've was about to go on holiday, i knew all about what to expect so mum was fine we had already bought me some to keep in my draw.. my dad was the worst thing in it all, he got all emotional about his baby becoming a woman gave me a big hug and got a bit teary bless him!

I was going to put a nice bag of bits on dd's bed later..a note, some choc (ithink this is this a bit premature?), some pads and then speak to her about it..just remembered her friend is coming for tea so will leave for tonight but really must do..is this the best way or should i just speak to her first..how did everyone else do it?
I feel a bit bad just leaving it there for her?

Mine were a bit traumatic when they started as I started the day after my mum lost twins at about 27/28 weeks, so she wasn't there the first day to talk to and I didn't really want to anyway iykwim, she noticed obviously with the laundry and was lovely. She had given me the talk a few years before and was fairly open about stuff without being over the top and gross. After that was very much "get on with things" but there was always a supply of towels in the airing cupboard :D (which is where I keep a stash for dd1!) To start with they were those horrible thick things but when I was about 14 I can remember Always being launched and a lady doing samples door to door :D

I gave my eldest dd "The Period Book" a few year ago and she has read that loads, she was quite nonchalant when she started, later than my sister and I did but I know my sil was quite a late starter so she sort of evened out at 13.

Perhaps you could add a little note saying she can ask you any questions if she wants to, then she knows you're there for her if she needs you.
  • what about not having a mum any readers here only had a dad to tell?
