all I got when I started was 'oh god' from my dad as if it was something bad, I remember not being prepared for ages after the first time either, once I came home with a red patch on my bum so I had walked down the street for all to see!
Reading all the nice responses the way mums treated their daughters is sad in a way for me.Oh well im old enough now to take care of myself0 -
Another one from the 'just get on with it' school of upbringing here!
In my all girls school, (1970's), there was a special incinerator in the toilets, with a drop down flap, where you were supposed to put the brown bag containing the used towel. When you put it in it fired up and roared in an alarming fashion to burn the waste. Very hygienic manner of disposal, but I was really nervous about using it and used to hide the bags of used towels in my school bag and burn them on the coal fire when I got home, when noone was there.
NEVER EVER discussed periods with my dad !!0 -
:rotfl:We had one of those in my (mixed) primary and secondary schools. It was in one of the cubicles, so you didn't dare go in there in case someone thought you were "on".Another one from the 'just get on with it' school of upbringing here!

I also didn't discuss periods with my Dad - or any male. I remember when we were told about them in 4th year juniors. All the girls were taken to one classroom and all the boys to another. At playtime when the boys asked what we'd been talking about, we said "netball":o
AND when the first advert for sanitary towels was finally allowed on TV (in about 1986!!) my mum told me she was really embarrassed because my Dad was sitting next to her when it came on! She'd had four children with him!:rotfl:C'est le ton qui fait la chanson0 -
Probably because I was wondering what I could do for DD and she definitely didn't want Dad involved!:cool:what about not having a mum any readers here only had a dad to tell?I lost my job as a cricket commentator for saying “I don’t want to bore you with the details”.Milton Jones0 -
I was 12 and a half and it was 1st January 1970 - what a way to bring a new decade in. I told my mum and think she said something about having to 'be careful' now. I had no idea what she was talking about. She told me to tell my older sister but I was too embarrassed. Pads were referred to as 'things' and would even write this on her shopping list. Dr. Whites and belt contraption was the way to deal with it -ugh. Didn't have tampons till I was 17 (!!!).We had an incinerator in school (catholic) and I remember a nun giving us a talk about how to dispose of them properly and I was sniggering in the back row. My dad would not push the shopping trolley if there were any 'things' in it.
I made sure my own daughter was prepared and there was always a supply in her bedroom.0 -

I also took this to friends house etc as my periods were really irregular for ages and this saved any imbarasment.
I did this for my daughter who started earlier this year and is heavy and not regular yet. Both DD's have known about periods for ages as i had endometriosis . When my Daughter started I took her out for a treat to cheer her up , i have always said she can come to me and talk about anything , i think that helps.0 -

I haven't had a chance to read everyone's stories yet, looking forward to it!
My mum got me the usual pads, a bar of Galaxy, lots of hugs, and my own wheatbag (you know the ones like big beanbags that you warm up in the microwave and use instead of a hot water bottle)- in hot pink of course
I remember getting sick of sanitary towels really quickly and going onto tampons. On that note, don't get girls those new Tampax Pearl- I tried a sample box that I got free and the PLASTIC applicator wasn't as comfy as the normal cardboard- plus it means more waste plastic in the world every time you change your tampon.
Now my boyfriend gets me the odd bar of chocolate for my moods, and gives me back-and-tummy rubs, bless him.0
