See? You are valued. I always used to leave a little Christmas present for our office cleaner, not that I ever met them, just so they knew their services were valued by the users even though they probably earned naff-all doing it.
Is the private work decently paid? I knew a cleaner who used to earn £7.50 an hour and that was 20 years ago when £7.50 was a generous hourly rate.0 -

I get £12/hr for the private house, min wage for the rest. Sadly I only do 3hrs private but it helps. I get a cup of Earl Grey there most weeks too;)0 -
SBS - that's good money for the house, could you get more private cleaning jobs - advertise?

Twelve quid an hour? For that money I'd be happy to clean someone else's lavs, no problem but I'd pass on the Earl Grey's.
If your employer is happy with you, I'd be surprised if they're not passing your name on and if they're not perhaps they could be prevailed upon to do so. Once upon a time when I was a live-out nanny good, trustworthy cleaners were like gold-dust and my employer's was treated very well indeed. I used to cook her a nice lunch twice a week0 -

Come to think of it, no one I used to work with had set out to be in IT!
Do you still want to teach? - if you already have a degree you could just do the postgrad year - and there are bursaries in addition to student loans - last time I looked I think it was about 6k.
Have you thought about doing some voluntary work with kids or in a school to see if it is for you?
Or, if you are interested in education, you could also look at education roles in museums (with your history background) or in adult ed (eg. local colleges, WEA etc)...

dont get yourself down over it - sometimes you have to take baby steps, and you have taken some pretty big ones already by posting on here and starting thinking about changing things...
It has won the battle (tonight), but certainly not the war!0 -
Heading to bed in a mo, early start tomorrow.
2 small glasses of red, topped up with fizzy water that I actually enjoyed!
2 tablets (has been 4-6)
Not perfect but a start.0
