  • Love, you KNOW you should cut back on the booze! Top marks for getting out there and signing up for the yoga. Maybe there's something else out there you can join. At least it'll keep you out of trouble and away from the demon drink and perhaps you'll find the relaxation techniques helpful and you'll learn how to sleep without knocking yourself out.

Now, it looks like the makings of a lovely day so why not put your warm clothes on and go out for a nice, long walk to blow the cobwebs away?
  • Well I am home for the day now. My usual routine is get in, shoes and coat off, internet on and wine poured:rolleyes:. So far I am avoiding the wine...

    So far so good!:j
  • Do you think you'd be interested in voluteering for something like the Samaritans? They are always on the look-out for new volunteers, and people who have never had any problems are usually not any good at it - you need to be able to empathise with the callers.

I used to be a 'Sam', and it is great for a ready-made social life as well as help for yourself through the down periods - it's somehow very comforting to be among so many people who know how to listen and sympathize. And they are always short of volunteers to work awkward hours, so it sounds like your job would be good. Being insomniac is also sometimes an advantage for doing night duties!

If you think you might be any good at just listening to people (which is 99% of what they do), give them a call - the training itself would be good for getting you out of the house and meeting people, even if you eventually decide it's not for you.

    And good luck!!

Good for you avoiding the wine so far - sounds like you just need to fill your evening up a bit with activities.

Can I offer an idea I'm using?

I drink far too much - and am on pretty hefty prescription meds.

I've taken to pouring fizzy water into my wine glass. You can surf to your heart's content, and go through the ritual of taking sips from your glass as normal, but you're not putting booze in your system.

Just a thought, but it's helping me cut back, and maybe it'd help you, too.
If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)
  • Just wanted to say there's nothing wrong with cleaning. I used to have a cleaning job once a week to top up my benefits when I was a single parent - I had previously been an office manager whilst with my ex. I certainly didn't think it was deameaning as I met some lovely people while doing the job and, more importantly, I met my husband! That was 10 years ago and we both have moved on to bigger and better things but I still look back on that job and think how much I enjoyed it!
  • Grr, my last post didn't come up!
Trying the water trick. Now settling to my main meal today - a bowl of cornflakes - cos I really need to go shopping but don't feel brave enough to bypass the wine on my first dry day in.........oh gosh, months:o Also avoiding the sleepers, usually have taken one by now.

Dear God, I never saw myself as an adict but I suppose I must be:eek: I don't do anything by halves - don't get one loan get 10, don't be skint just go bankrupt, don't have a glass of wine have a bottle.....

hey, well done so far - and dont worry about not doing things by halves - that can be a strength if you re-direct it!

hmm, a history degree - just thinking - if you start to think about studying again, it is worth thinking about where it may lead to as well... so - if you could choose any job, no matter how far fetched it may be, what would it be?

(I have about a dozen things I would like to do... could do with six lives really!)
  • I always wanted to be a teacher, but somehow ended up in IT:confused: Come to think of it, no one I used to work with had set out to be in IT!

As for the cleaning, it was a means to an end - I walked out of my office job prior to the bankruptcy because I was so stressed and knew if I didn't leave then I would end up being signed off, possibly longterm. I was ineligible for JSA, not that I looked into it really, so took the first job I found. And 2yrs on I'm still doing it! I work part time for 3 companies, and one private home, and I find it so rewarding! As I was told when I first started, an MD can be off for weeks without anyone noticing, but leave the office without a cleaner for a week and you soon know it!
