Though my experience might be of some help if someone is thinking about selling their scrap gold.:D
I decided to take the plunge and send my gold off by special delivery (next day service) to Hatton Garden Metals.
As I sent it on a Saturday afternoon it was only guaranteed to arrive by 1pm on Tuesday, had I been able to get to the post office on Monday i would have but as I work and just wanted to get it sent after humming and haring over it for so long.
I paid a little extra for special delivery, £5.80 instead of £4.95 as I'd estimated it was worth more that the standard £500 insurance offered.
I received an email Tuesday afternoon confirming my weights (weighed on electric kitchen scales) and informing me of the price of gold for that day, which had gone up! A cheque arrived Wednesday morning.
Great service! :T
Yes, I agree it does have an element of risk, and I worried about the what ifs -
what if the post office had lost the parcel? I would imagine claiming the insurance would be a bit of a nightmare, I've yet to hear if anyone has had this happen to but would be interested to know for future reference.
Or, what if my gold turned out not to be gold at all? Some of mine was purchased abroad and not hallmarked. Although there is the option of paying £6.50 to have anything returned to you that isn't I was nervous about having to pay that for a tiny earring back.
Once I had the idea of selling it in my head I was very tempted by the high street traders but the prices they were offering were so low after getting the quote on the Hatton web site I would have felt cheated some how.
I don't have anything to do with the company or any of it's employees but wanted to add my review and say that personally I have been really pleased with the service, so much so that my Mum, who is the worlds most cautious woman on the planet, is bringing her gold to me later to weigh on my scales and send herself.0 -
I too can confirm the fantastic service. I sent my old stuff off on a Tuesday - received by them Wednesday and money in my bank by Friday! Would def recommend and use again.
And no I'm not affiliated in anyway - living in Northern Ireland too lol.0 -
I note that a lot of people are reporting that the money is paid directly into their bank account, so I guess you are all opting to be paid by BACS.
My only concern is that the online form that you fill in which asks for your bank deatils is NOT A SECURE WEBPAGE. I don't know if it's different if you first create an account first, then login before entering your details, but I'd definitely be wary about sending my bank details over the internet via an unsecure (unencrypted) webpage.
Has anyone else noticed this potential security glitch and managed to come up with some sort of workaround (eg is it possible to leave off your bank details and then print off the form and enter your bank details manually before sending the form off with your gold?) Failing that, I think I'd probably play safe and ask to be paid by cheque if I were sending off my gold. :think:0 -

Hatton Garden Metals.--It does everything it says on the tin---brilliant.
I weighed my gold at the Post Office before I sent it.
Was paid by BACS next day. The gold price had gone up-
got more than I expected.--£520-- was offered £160 by the local
rip-off merchant

Sent gold yesterday- special delivery costing £4.95.
Email today received 11.54am
"Thanks for submitting your gold, it has now been verified and full details are as follows: -
9ct: 42.10 g @ £8.19 = £344.80
Total = £344.80"
Money was in my bank by 2.00pm.
Thrilled as I only estimated the weight and thought that was only 30g there!!0 -

Weighed a lot of unwanted and broken gold on kitchen scales, made it (roughly) 210gms. Posted by special delivery last Friday, then filled in online form. I didn't know the carat weights so reckoned it all at 9ct. Promised approx £1700.
AfterI sent the form, I then found I should have waited for an email to enclose with parcel !! Panic. Contacted HGM by email and phone. They were so kind and helpful and said I could copy the form and send by letter post, which I did. On Monday they matched the parcel and letter together, and told me in the afternoon that my remittance was £2353.54, a lot of the items were more than 9ct. So they were completely honest, and the money was in my bank this morning. I received much more than I thought and about £900 more than a local gold buyer would have given me.
I am absolutely thrilled with their service, and my only advice to anyone is to submit the online form before posting, so that you can put the required email copy in with the items. But then you readers are probably not geriatric (very !!) blondes like me !!0 -
Quick reply to Ianonline. There is no need for an https site when you put in bank details. All you are entering is your name, sort code and account number. These details are on every cheque we write, and we never worry about that.0
