He's not talking rubbish at all. It's quite possible to provision for a million users, or 10 million users, if you want. The issue is cost, and I'm sure that's what the factor is in this case.

See/TM could easily ensure that their servers stayed up during glastonbury/leeds/reading sales times, but there'd be a large cost associated, and that's why it isn't done.

I'm well aware of the technical issues being the intranet administrator of a ftse 100 company. Obviously their are cost implications in ensuring extra capacity can be managed, but it's often simply not possible to estimate the volume of traffic.

And often as you say it's simply not worth the cost of ensuring 100% service. There's a balance to be found. I'd agree TM should be able to afford to pay to ensure service and that it'd be in their best interests. But this isn't the case for every business or website.

This was a freebie promotion - you take your chances. The site was inaccessible for approximately 20 minutes - to complain about it going down during what was always going to be a stampede seems highly pointless to me.

I think you're being a little naive. Some of the biggest sites out there also use promotions like this to harvest email addresses, which they can then sell on. That's also the nature of the internet for you.

And if they do, so what? - just use a disposable email address. I never give out my work or primary personal email address to any kind of offer/competition or a company I'm not sure of, I use a gmail/hotmail address.

You're both correct- servers, bandwidth and man hours all cost money, ticketmaster, seeticket etc. along with tastelondon won't pay extra to sell tickets (or give stuff away), because they know they'll all go within a day or two regardless of the state of the site- they could keep the site up if they really wanted to.

Of course, but why should they pay so much extra to give something away? I won one last time and I was grateful for it. I tried this time for my friend and wasn't so fortunate. It's just luck of the draw and I am astonished that so many people are moaning about it, it's so insignificant - get over it!
  • I am absoultey devasted! was on the website from 12 and it crashed on me!! gutted! I managed to finally register at 1240 however i doubt very much its for a years membership espically after 40mins of the offer opening boooooooooo :-( hopefully many peopel had the same problem and with the site going down for a bit i managed to squeeze into it.. the one month offer isnt even worth it as many places which advertise in taste london isnt running any offers during December.. so the point of a free one month offer is useless!

    ahh well!

Totally in agreement with laughing cow.
People need to lighten up and take things in perspective.

Well said! Sometimes we're a little too focussed on our own blinkered lives. Is it the end of the world if you 'ONLY' get a month's membership? You're still getting 50% off your meals for doing really very little. What about all the soldiers who have died in Afghanistan? How about people who suffer domestic abuse every day? Don't you think those sort of thigns are a little more important?
