Avira AntiVir - got a problem with laptop
Comments
-
Really sorry to post this but I installed Avira again and it updated - I ran a scan and its stuck again this time on 22.7%
The info from the box is
Status: Scanning file
Last object
C:\ProgrammDate\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\Windows.edb
This is exactly the same place it jammed yesterday.0 -
Delete the file and see how it does then:idea:0
-
It's an index file for Windows Search on the computer. It could be deleted and would compile a new index, or the indexing could be switched off
Or this thread ends with a recommendation to except it from scans
http://forum.avira.com/wbb/index.php?page=Thread&threadID=97495Please add this file to the exceptions
C:\program data\microsoft\search\data\applications\windows\windows.edb
To add an exception you have to do:
Right clik on the tray icon > configure antivir > tick expert > guard > scan > exception
same for scanner.
Google search shows some other results saying the file is locked and should be skipped, and perhaps default filters were reset which overrode this0 -
Thank you both for your replies, but I`m at a loss as don`t know how to delete the file.
also trying to add the exception I can get into configure antivir-tick expert-guard-scan but can`t find the next bit.
I`m getting really confused I`m so sorry just don`t understand.
Thanks0 -
Go to the direction listed
C:\ProgrammDate\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications \Windows\Windows.edb
so open C drive
Then look for the PROGRAMMDATA folder (youll need to go into the FOLDER OPTIONS and VIEW and SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS)
Inside that will be the MICROSOFT folder etc etc
Keep going through the folders until you come to Windows.edb
THATS the one your removing:idea:0 -
Thank you so much aliEnRIK, just off to work but will try this when I get back later. I am so grateful for all your help. Fingers crossed this will sort the problem.
Can you tell me was the stuff that Combofix removed `bad`. As you know I don`t really understand all of this and just wondering what had actually got onto daughters laptop.
Thanks again0 -
Just thought I`d have a little dabble... canyou tell me how to find hidden files and folders please.0

HI aliEnRIK, well I must be quite stupid or am doing something very wrong as I cannot find Windows Explorer! I did click on a button `show hidden files and folders` but nothing happened, and am getting very muddled again..sorry!
Its also Vista Home Premium but I`m assuming its the same as XP!
Any more help would be great, thank you so much.0 -
Once youve clicked to show hidden files and folders and clicked 'OK' then you then need to go find the file to delete (c drive/ program data etc etc):idea:0
