Your best bet, is to find out your annual consumption plug the figures into a consumer focus acredited website, and switch to the cheapest tarriff, supply your provider by whatever means available regualr meter readings and buy an energy monitor to manage your cosnumption - you'll be in a better position in 12 months - (in my opinion)

At best you'll be able to programe in an approxiamte unit cost (as it won't be able to differntiate between primary and secondary unit rates) the monitor will show the kWh and basic monetary ocst of your suage in a real-time environment. Meaning as you turn the tv or lights on and off you'll see the effect of the increase in consumption. So in theory you'll be able to better use the equipement that consumes the higher volumes of enerfy.

So can it be plugged into any socket and it will give you the total consumption for the whole house?
  • Jesus Mynewt, what a load of rubbish you have been going on about in this thread. Customers with Energy Smart can still pay a fixed monthly Direct Debit if they really want to.. however the preferred method of payment is a variable monthly Direct Debit. EG, you put your reading in, you receive your bill for £35.96.. then £35.96 will be taken from your bank 14 days later. You can still have a fixed monthly DD if you wish, as some customers wouldn't like paying more during winter and less during summer.

Also, how has British Gas "tied" you in for 12 months? Your being charged exactly the same rates, they are just giving you a £40.00 credit after a year? Something for nothing? Why are you complaining? If you leave after 11 months, thats fine, you will still pay exactly what you would have paid if you never signed up for energy smart!

My first instinct on reading your post littletommytucker was me thinking it's a bit abusive, but reading on, this is what I asked about in my previous reply to Mr Mynewt at 3:21 today. This is what I wanted to know. That BG will bill me every month for what I have used, and I will pay that amount. Right?
  • That is correct. You will input your meter reading each month and then have a bill produced. You can pay the bill using your debit card or you can have it set to come out by DD automatically. In between bills you can input a meter reading and get a projection of what you bill will be if you carry on using the same amount of energy, its all about giving the customer more control over their account, in the same way you will do when smart meters are introduced. After one year you will be able to make direct comparisons with what you have used the previous year . My post was meant to be abusive towards Mynewt, hes being going on and on about this subject and he clearly doenst know anything about it.

I have come up against a problem here, what happens if you away when the meter readings become due, can you input them before you go, or will they base that month's payment on the yearly average?

If it works like that I think its worth adding energy smart, BG are always overcharging me per month, I requested a refund on the credit and received just over £1000 from my gas account.

If you have somehow got the wrong impression then I apologise there is no contractual obligation for you to remain with british gas, just a monetary one. This plan is a "bolt-on" to exsisting plans - British Gas do not have a current plan where customers can pay by variable monthly direct debit, this was at the time I last time I checked their tarriffs (6 weeks ago approximately).
