The only problem with the Ikea self service is that they dont take cash, these do need to be manned to help and assist customers.:money: giving me & my darling boys a better cheaper life

I've used the ones in Filton, Bristol 3 times. Massive queues because they can't weigh things like packets of washers or curtain hooks, nor can they weigh things like curtain poles as they won't stay on the scales. I watched several people of all ages try without success to use them. On two occasions there were no other tills open due to "staff shortages" yeah right because all the staff have been made redundant probably. They are rubbish!0

My local B&Q normally have only one person supervising and the staff there are very helpful and seem to be painfully aware that the tills don't always work according to plan. They do work better if you pay by cash.
I have to say that all the staff at self help tills I have encountered seem to be generally very helpful and are there with the attiitude that it is the self service checkouts that don't always run smoothly rather than the customers are dumb. Then again, maybe they keep that thought to themselves, hehe.
I remember when they first started appearing and the staff had to coax the reluctant customers to come over to the empty self service tills away from the queues.
Oh, and B&Q seem to recognise teeny weeny clay plant pots as large outdoor items so you're not allowed to put them in the bagging area.0 -
Our experience of the tills at B&Q:
item scanned at the wrong price...had to call an assistant, who sent a runner, who didn't come back, meantime till prompted me to call for help....and stayed waiting for me to complete....so staff member came back, adjusted price anyway, took my fiver and put it in the machine and said your receipt and change comes out there....MEANTIME the runner still hadn't come back....so receipt in hand I charge off to look for him....sorry sir, I couldn't see the item...no ? I said...here they are here, still 12 on the hook...see...the barcode's the same number, the price is £4.25...and I have paid for them...so can I have them now and go....oh sorry sir...didn't realise you were waiting....thick or what?...being a DIY store...2 short planks sprung to mind
staff called to confirm my wife was over 18 for a purchase...I wish...our youngest son is now 21...I'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j
Those who can do, those who can't, come to me for lessons:cool:0 -

Surely curtain poles are sold by length and not weight?one of the famous 50 -
I quite often work on the self-service tills @ B&Q so just wanted to clear a few things up:
-Head office say it is best practice to keep at least one manned till open to enable customers to have the choice. Unfortunately I work in a 'mini-warehouse' that is very understaffed and we only really have the option of opening self-scan.
-The tills will call the assistant to confirm your age for any 'dangerous' product (knives, white spirit, superglue etc) regardless of how old you are, it doesn't know!
-I agree there is a problem with really light objects such as plastic curtain hooks, plumbing bits etc, they're simply too light to register on the scales.
-The scales are not the bit where scan the item, it is inside the 'shower screen' bit.
-You can stand curtain poles on the scales. On the left of the scales you have a shelf higher up for you small items, on the right there is red bars along the floor of the scales so they don't slip off and a shower screen to lean the poles up against.
-If the till says "large item - please leave in trolley" you cannot put it on the scales or it will call the assistant over. It is not expecting any extra weight and you will confuse it.
Anything else you wanna know just ask0 -
I find the bagging area on the self service tills struggle to cope with 8' x 4' sheets of marine grade plywood. However, they are handy for getting rid of small change.....0
