B&Q staffing seemed a bit pointless

Options
The fuse on our dishwasher blew yesterday so just nipped to the B&Q warehouse down the road to get a pack of fuses and went to pay and the only tills that were open were the self checkout ones, which isn't a problem as far as i'm concerned, but there were 3 members of staff just lurking round the self checkout tills to help people who didn't know what to do.

A couple of people had a bit of a rant asked why they couldn't just open a normal till but the reply was 'They were understaffed and this was the easiest way to get customers served'.

Surely it doesn't take 3 people to watch the self checkout tills and their time would be better spent opening at least one of the normal tills rather than faffing about all huddled round a little computer screen watching what people were scanning.

They can't have been that short staffed and there reply would have been more truthful had they just said 'We can't be bothered'.

I often wonder about this too.I am guessing that they think that the more customers are encouraged to use these, eventually they see a future where they don't have to pay check out staff,as all customers will self scan.Personally,I do not like them as if there is a mistake made- I don't want to be the one accused of making it.

It's probably not their decision whether to be watching the self checkouts or manning the tills. They get told by management and have no say about it.

B & Q self service tills are carp. Thats why staff have to hover, becuase customers keep getting stuck with them. I'd advise B & Q to go have a look at Ikea self service tills. They are truly a breeze to operate and you would actually choose to use them...not avoid them.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

    Hi

I inderstand how you could put a packet of fuses through a self serve till but what about the loose stuff and stuff that needs measuring.

I recently went into M and S and they had put in more self serve tills and all this meant was that there was half a dozen empty self serve tills and a big cue of people that didn't want to use them. I was happy cos I got through really quickly (using the self serve till) but I must admit I don't like being forced to use self serve tills, I like a choice but how long until they cut more staff and you have no choice.

  • I've noticed a real increase in these self service, checkouts in shops, and check ins at airports. They seem to be every where and growing in numbers. Sometimes you just want a member of staff to help you, or put your stuff through.

I don't really mind using the self service tills apart from in Morrisons where they constantly say 'Please put the item in the bag' despite the item already being in the bag, then you get a member of staff having a look through the bag to make sure you haven't slipped anything in that you shouldn't.

I wish they would bring back 'cash only' tills in shops as well. They are very few and far between now.

  • Last time I went to B and Q I had to use one of these stupid tills to by 3m Conduits. After the spotty moldoon reset the till for the second time and ignored the third attempt, I walked

I went into B&Q last week and this old guy in an orange apron came up and asked me if I wanted decking!
Luckily I had my wits about me and managed to get in the first punch and sorted him out!
So take this as a warning when going there.
