How about homemade sausage rolls or homemade quiche?
I always used Jus rol for timesaving but have just used Tesco shortcrust pastry mix it's dead cheap and does a great quiche base.
Maybe ready to roll flaky pastry for the sausage rolls.
Just thought I would add my two penny worth!0 -
Eh, the answer to every single nibble-with-a-cuppa question is always Twink's Hobnobs and variations thereof0

I'm gonna sound right common here, but I've always followed my Gran's tradition of serving cornish pasties (with a proper crust!) and heavy cake, (with a blue line of lard) for those of us with less than ladylike appetites.
That's as well as the lighter scones, cakes and sarnies etc. Us kids always had to eat 2 savoury choices before we were allowed to attack any cakes.
Cucumber sandwiches I've honestly never seen the point of, (like eating air) but grated carrot and homemade hummous is cheap and yummy.
I love doing afternoon tea for friends, it's a forgotten art and yet everyone of all ages/backgrounds enjoys it. I think it takes us all back to a bygone age of civility.
It's so lovely to hear other people getting into it too, and all of your ideas for making it seem a little more special. It's my niece's christening in a few months and you have given me some lovely ideas - especially the one about making a cake stand. Presentation makes such a difference, and it's great to get ideas for doing it cheaply.0 -
We are going to be doing an Afternoon Tea for Will and Kates wedding - it's become a bit of a tradition with any royal occasion (We even did something similar for Diana's funeral - weeping at her funeral and eating cake at the same time - it's a girl thing;)
I think it's nice to go a bit mad with the presentation, definitely china cups, tea pot, cake stand if you can, flowers on the table, napkins and those old fashioned paper lace doilies. Make it look pretty and it feels really special.
I once had afternoon tea at the Savoy - lovely. Never managed the Ritz - it gets booked up ages in advance.0 -
Hi,
I'm hoping to have a naming ceremony for my baby but am on a budget. I am hoping to hire the church hall for afterwards and have a 50's style afternoon tea for the celebration afterwards. I'm thinking of hiring a bouncy castle for the kids and having a pinata. Decorating with bunting etc. I don't want any alcohol because in my experience it becomes less of a family event and more of an adult one, and anyway theres a pub down the road if anyone really feels the need . So I'm thinking tea, traditional lemonade, ginger beer, cupcakes, strawberries and cream, little sandwiches, scones that sort of thing.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance0 -
