I was the victim of card fraud recently and these are the steps I took to track the transactions. If anyone else has suggestions on what do do they will be gratefully received!!..................................................................Please note I am NOT an expert. I learnt all this the hard way just a few short weeks ago! But it meant my card account was refunded before my monthly payment was due!

I must say that I am amazed by your diligence, but I really have to say .. WHY ?

If there has been a fraudulent transaction on your credit card - all you are required to do is report it to the card issuer.
There is absolutely NO onus on you to pay a transaction that is in dispute.
If the bank considers that you are, in some way, are to blame THEY have to prove it ! You do not have to prove otherwise.

If your card issuer is being awkward just report them to The Financial Ombudsman - he is paid a lot more than you to sort out your problems !

I, cannot believe, that you think, this is an appropriate response, to someone in distress, asking for advise.

    It's an appalling attitude.

I agree. Some of the replies to the OP are pathetic. He was asking for advice, not an English lesson from a few prigs that wrongly believe themselves superior.

I would really love to have a chat with you about responsibility, but this thread is about helping another victim of fraud. If you really do want an answer, I suggest you write a rather polite PM.

Just what gives you the impression that I might send you a rather impolite PM ? :D

Sorry, just to add my 2p worth, only the victim is required to report to the police, 80% of the time this will be the card issuer but may be the consumer if they have been held liable for the fraud which is only normally in Chip and PIN transactions.

... Still awaiting a reply from them! Thanks 2 all those who helped :)
  • I am sorry in advanced if this reply is long winded but i need to tell it like it is, i am also sorry if my english is a little rough, but i am from Yorkshire, and I type how we speak. lol

Nsroc, we had a recent card fraud , totalling £1488.50, leaving us 995.79 overdrawn, i can understand the stress this may cause you. This is our day of events. At 8.15am the fraud centre called my OH, a lady with a foreign voice asked him for telephone banking detail, now i know now we should have acted, but at that time in the morning we told her to ring back, the voice played alarm bells. When i arrived at work i checked the bank account, and OMG in the red, i absolutley pooed myself.
I rang the bank straight away, but because the account wasnt in my name, they couldnt discuss is with me. aaaarrrrrgh, my OH came home and we rang imediately. They cancelled the card, and went through a series of questions, eventually stating they would send legal documents for us him to sign, to get the money back.
I went through the statement ringing all the transactions, ie. i looked for all the telephone numbers for the companies that appeared. I told them the situation and a couple of them managed to save the goods as they were in transit. Some even gave me a delivery address where the goods were going, a name was given, a email adress was also given.
The next day we found DHL had also tried to deliver some goods to our address ( we were so pleased we werent there to accept them ), so again I rang the companies to explain why i couldnt accept delivery, one even said that it was law that companies should only sent to card address and not alternate addresses.
The next day, we had a Police calling card " could the occupants of blah blah blah , please contact the above number."
Within 10 mins the police arrived, they were sent to follow a lead from Chichester police relating a transaction. I thought i wish it was only 1..lol, he then began to take a statement from us, and I gave him all the details that i had collated from the companies.
About 2 weeks later we had a answer machine message saying that the transactions were made from Nigeria all but one which they were still persuing.
Since then the money is back in the account, but the amount of stress is unbeliveable, the thought of knowing someone knows where we live, all our details it seems, The bank account was very rarely used, like emergency fund, but someone got the details from somewhere.

    Hope you find this helpful.
  • I had a couple of fraudulent transactions occur on my Virgin card account. I called the fraud department, confirmed verbally that the transactions were not mine and they then sent me a list which I had to sign and fax back. They suspended my account whilst they investigated.

A couple of days later everything was sorted, they opened a brand new account for me and it's been fine since.

Iti s scary to think these unknown people have got your details, to them though your just a name and number and it's nothing against you personally.

You can usually be assured that once they have had their few spends through on your card details they will moveon to the next person.
  • Thats what the policeman said, just a little fish in a big ocean. He even said that the banks dont even tell the Police in a lot of circumstances, he thinks its because the banks like to keep a lid on it, and just use the insurances to get there money back without telling the true picture, maybe thats why the banks are in financial ruin, i dunno, but if thats the attitude of the banks then its not the right attitude.
