Hi a lot of the pound shops sell quite big money tins for £1 - perhaps have a look at them... Last year Asda were selling sealed tins with millionaire in training on the side.

I do the money completely in our house - and tell OH not to spend anything LOL He still does but is pretty good. I say to him if he wants to spend dosh he needs to do the £10 a day challenge to fund it! I don't do savings pots particularly - I would rather have interest on the money or pay off debt quicker and just pay less the month bills are due... You have to find what works for you....

Just wishing you all the best on your journey

  • Hi Saving Holmes - thanks for stopping by. I think your way is better overall, you get interest, you pay more off etc. For me at the moment, I think I need to get into the habit of saving for those essentials that aren't every month. And having the cash in pots rather than in various accounts will help me to simplify my finances and change my habits.
Hopefully, in a couple of years, when payments are less and there is more coming in, I hope to change over to your way.

As far as OH goes - I couldn't take control of all the money, it just wouldn't work for us. And he's not rubbish at all, he just suffers more as he's the one with the large salary so should be able to afford stuff. But he is good and I think he's better when he has control over his money. I hope! hehe.

I will definitely be checking out poundland, as I'm still not convinced that my paper mache skills are up to making something that won't fall apart the minute I put a coin in!

Keep stopping by and giving advice, I need all the help I can get!
  • Just back from cinema yummy hehe x it's definatley a totty fix. Hope you find a saving tin at poundland :) x

  • Morning all,

Happy - glad you got your totty fix! Hope everyone had a good weekend.
Mine was lovely, went to my friends wedding on Saturday, she looked stunning, both of them were so nervous, but the ceremony was beautiful, the readings were lovely, they did not stop grinning all day, really nice to see!

Also really good to catch up with old friends, and because the wedding was paid for, including a free bar!, made it pretty cheap. Did have to put up with the friends we were staying with going on about money all the time. They both earn a lot, and have no debt, and a lot of disposable cash. I don't mind being different and I don't begrudge them their efforts of course, but its hard when you have to listen to someone go on about their savings, and their honeymoon next year (which I think is costing about £6k!!!!!) and all the trips and things they do. Sigh. Back to reality with work today, so feeling a little blue.

But, thinking if we can just get through the week, and then December, things will be ok.
As I was reminded on InMyDreams diary, two months of no council tax soon, and hopefully OH will get a small pay rise in the new year. I need to increase my job hunting, as the funding for my PhD runs out in March. Very scared about what will happen then, but must be positive!!!!

Going to work on the budget this week, and see whats what. Knowledge is power and all that!
Ok, I think I'm just rambling now. To work!
    xx
  • Hi rambling. Yes I know what you mean about rich friends. It's like a punch in the head when your trying to debt bust and people have big disposable incomes. I watched that film friends with money jennifer Anniston. It's a nice film. This weather depresses everyone lol x x

  • We have very very close friends who I love to bits but they constantly talk to us about their savings, income and how much they claim from benefits which they really aren't entitled to

I have sometimes had to say that it is private and I feel uncomfortable and listening to it. They have absolutely not a clue about the amount of debt we are in. Saying this, this is the way they live their lives and if they knew how badly off we really were then they may not talk so openly about it and I don't begrudge it, just wish I was them :D

Glad you had a good wedding :)

    2nd debt - MBNA - £6,618.52
First in many many to go - baby steps and all that!
First lump sum to go - fingers crossed!

  • Yeah, I don't begrudge them at all, they chose well in their careers, haven't moved around much and have always had money. It just becomes a one sided conversation when they talk about holidays, upgrading the car, (very) expensive wedding plans, and the amount they go out eating/drinking etc. And we sit and smile and nod and say 'how lovely'. hehehe. I have made a promise to myself that when we are debt free, I will not talk about what I spend my money on!

Have to say though, if its benefits they're not entitled to that they brag about, I think I'd be a little more irritated!

I've seen that film, it is really sweet. And a happy ending is always nice :-)
  • I'd be reporting them lol just out walking with dog fresh air always good x
