Should Ricky kick off about pocketed cash?

  • I'd probably hint to the assistant discreetly that I'd seen them pocket it - something like "Haha - you are going to hand that in, right?" just informally. Maybe they are putting it in their pocket in order to take it to the office to hand in and it would be mean to accuse them of stealing outright.

That said, I think my responsibility for the money ended when I handed it over to the store's employee. Whatever they do with it is down to their individual conscience. If they are stealing, they will probably do it again in future and will ultimately be found out. If not, then all's fine and no-one has been hurt or offended.

    yes because its theft

    +1

I've just gone back to complain about being charged for an item I didn't want, ask for, or receive, and it was only 12p.
Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?
  • It would be pointless kicking off about it, its his word against the person on the till! He should've either kept it or put it to good use, which ever way his conscience led him.
  • He should at least ask a supervisor if the money was reported as belonging to a customer. The cashier may well have logged it at the end of their shift.
  • I would go back to the shop worker and ask for a receipt, as this should have been given in the first place. If he is not able to do so, insist on a team leader or customer service person does so.

I wouldn't have handed it to the assistant I would have taken it to Customer Services, because in my local Tesco they have a lost & found book.
Then I would have asked for a receipt so that if it wasn't claimed I would have proof that it had been handed in by me & claim it back in the future
  • Definitely complain. Today a £10 left, tomorrow a customer's purse/wallet? Theft is theft, regardless of value or stuation, and this scenario sounds quite blatant.

Firstly just because the assistant pops the note in his/her pocket does not mean that they are stealing it. How do you know they aren't in the middle of something like watching a shoplifter? However, I do think it is better to openly hand it over to the 'customer services' personnel and make sure it is properly documented. It could so easily be somebody who does not have a lot of spare money.

Just to add to this though. I know of somebody who worked at Asda collecting trollies. This young man found £30 in a trolley. He pocketed it and openly bragged about it to me. I have to say I was pretty horrified at this not just because of the theft but also because if somebody had come back asking about it then he had left himself wide open to probably the sack because of telling all and sunder. He was sacked only a few weeks later... for buying drugs on the supermarket carpark. Silly boy.

  • There is an official legal recording procedure to cover this situation and a busy shop is not a good reason for permitting theft. There is never any need for an employee to put anything that doesn't belong to them or that they are not officially permitted in connection with the business, to put in their pockets. If an employee cannot be trusted with a small thing like this they cannot be trusted with anything, it might come out of the till next time. It could have been a £50 note and it could have been yours! The value doesn't matter it's the moral principal. Theft from shops and supermarkets costs millions every year and pushes prices of goods, insurance etc up for everyone and contributes to small shops going out of business.
  • i think i would have mentioned it to customer services that you had handed it to the assistant. i don't think the value matters - i was once given over £20 change in tesco when it should of been under £5 and i handed it back to the assistant as it wasn't mine.
