having thought about this more over night and today at work, i thought I must be just too sensative to the topic that Gary Windass (not Windouse as I previoulsy said) said in last nights episode, however, having talked about it today with colleagues and friends what was shocking to most was Gary saying soliders getting blown up was their fault, I can't remember the exact comments and can't find an exact transcription of his comments, but most ive spoken to (about a dozen colleagues and friends) were shocked by that bit. The other comments about poppies etc was ok as the 2 'vets' in the pub soon put him in his place, so that was understandalbe and not really offensive.
Now, having a look back to all the replies on here, I actually thought, thatI was too sensative to this but I see others are not to happy either. So i guess its not just me who was shocked by the comments.
I do not live in a world of sunshine and rainbows, however, If I want to listen to comments like what was said and im sure there are lots of other people who would agree with this then I would watch the likes of 'south Park' as those programmes are full of offensive material to shock the audiance in a funny way, however, they are still offensive but thats the nature of the programme and you understand that before viewing.
Ok, now i would just like to tell you why I found the comments offensive. To me Corrie is a light hearted soap opera, different from the likes of Eastenders and the long gone Brookside. There are other soaps like Hollyoaks but I can't comment on the content as I do not watch it. Soaps these days try to tackle topics that are real to life and in most cases do a very good job, however, the insult went a little too far in my opinion, yes he slagged the poppies, but was brough into check, thats where the comments should have been left. Saying comments after that was offensive to familes who have lost their young ones in combat, where ever that might have been, lefts not get political and speak about Afghan and Iraq, as I think it is irrelivant.
Now, I have a son who is in the army, he has been to iraq and came back unharmed but that was purely by luck, and not training. I come from a town that has had deaths in the Afghan war, through the topic of what was said by the character in corrie, how do you think his family would have felt hearing what 'Gary' had said. I would like to see a transcript of what he said so everyone could actually read it.
Ok, now I would just like to add a few points about 'squaddies' and some comments on here make them out to be idiots (not a quote) who fuel themselves on booze and get into fights and get local girls pregnant. There are elements of people in every job in the world that are a bit 'daft' and go a little too far, we see it in football, celebs on tv and in most factories and workplaces. But it does not mean that everyone is a bad apple. My son has been in the army for several years and never been out fighting, yes he has met lots of girls, but they seem to like squaddies who have money to spend. In my son's town, on a thursday night its called Squaddie night, and the girls are out for a good night, so its not really all squaddies that go out looking for the girls, i'm not saying things dont happen with fights and ladies but its a small element.
My son joined the army to live a full life and see the world, and hopefully help in a cause, whatever that mightbe. After he has done his time he wants to come out and join the police force, he has never been in toruble with the law, he has no off spring anywhere and does not cause trouble. My lad has respect for himself. All the big powers they've silenced me. So much for free speech and choice on this fundamental human right, and outing the liars.0 -
I didnt realise corrie was lighthearted - murders, infedelity, more murders and such like which reflect real life.
Im not trying to denounce what you say as i never watched the programme but if a TV show has to reflect real life then it has to reflect every walk of life from people shagging others wives to racists and those who are small minded enough to say those in the army put themselves in that position by joining the forces in the first place.
Life on TV has to reflect what happens in real life or else the whole programme gets devalued - I remember the uproar with the first lesbian kiss on brookside and indeed eastenders - but its reflecting real peoples views and those views may be abhorrent to others but so is voting for the BNP to me - but i know it happens so thats why i was glad they had the BNP on TV - to relect what is happenning in the real world.
People can, quite rightly say that those who join the forces put themselves in harms way - i come from a forces family myself - and i do agree with them in some way , because that is what they have done. Its more the fault of a government sending them to a pointless war in the first place which is the real problem.one of the famous 50 -

My father served 22 years in the Forces, I spent my childhood travelling with his job, and know a lot of kids who lost their father in service. I thought I could follow in his footsteps, but it wasn't for me.What about police who are facing kids with guns on the streets? Or the fearless firemen who will go into a raging fire to save another human being? Are they not worthy of being in the same bracket as those who choose to join the army and go fight other people?
I don't recall me, or anyone else making an issue of that?<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->0 -

They were not, I was. you mentioned anyone laying down their life for Queen and country which puts down the people in the forces who do their jobs for the people in this country who you dont seem to hold in the same esteem.one of the famous 50 -
