I find some of the comments on this thread FAR more offensive than anything I've seen on Corrie or even South Park. There are bad apples in any section of society, as this thread highlights in more ways than one...

Those that do not like our military force should try living in an oppressed nation, or maybe a completely anarchic society. Somalia may be a nice place to live.

Apologies if what I have observed with my own two eyes is offensive to you.

I am not questioning the high value of our armed forces and their excellent reputation throughout the world.

Nor am I questioning the fact that some of work that they do requires great courage.

But what I do challenge is the somewhat misguided notion that every single member of the armed forces is completely immune to criticism and that they are all somehow automatically elevated as grand pillars of the community as soon as they put a uniform on.

People are correct when they state that you do have a choice in joining the armed forces. Nobody has forced you to do so. Its not like the days of conscription when teachers, doctors, clerks and mechanics were all drafted in and put on the frontline after about 1 months training.
  • i was very offended watching coronation street on the 11th with the comments that gary made, im also offended at some of the comments on here. my brother was in Iraq and got injured and lost some close friends and no they didnt deserve it and nor are they losers for trying to protect us and our country. i think its disgusting what gary said and im sure not even a really stupid person in real life would say something like that. there are other ways they could have put it without being so disrespectful.

Anyone who is prepared to lay down their life for Queen and country is a greater man than you or I.

I had the chance about 15 years ago to go for a commissioned role, but I'm not afraid to admit that I was not man enough to go ahead with that choice.

I am sorry to hear about your brother and his friends.

But how was Iraq a threat to us?

Everyone is entitled to their view on wars/ the armed forces that is why we live in a free country if you don't like it, tough I'm afraid.

but there are many many people against both the war in Iraq and Afghanistan who have every right to voice their opinion on this issue. That is what they fought 2 world wars for - freedom of speach and if you try and crush other peoples freedom to speak out against the wars then you are actually disrespecting those who died in those 2 wars who gave thier life so that person can do so.

    I know which is worse.

I don't think that anyone here has suggested that anyone in the armed forces is a "loser" as you put it. There are a number of people in this country who disagree with the war in Iraq - me included - it doesn't mean that they don't believe our soldiers are doing a brave & difficult job.

That has to be THE most insensitive and ignorant comment I have ever read on MSE!!!
It's because of people like our soldiers, that we have the great country we have to live in today. Yes they sign up to do a job, but I think they would have the right to "complain" if they had limbs blown off
God love our soldiers they are obviously far more noble than the likes of you.
    Hi,

Funnily enough I was watching a program last night (late on ITV) & they were interviewing soldiers who were in involved in the Troubles in NI. One soldier, had been shot in the back & could never walk again. But he didn't blame the army and wasn't feeling sorry for himself - he stated that he knew the risks when he signed up - which is exactly what Ste C was saying.

How do you know that then? What about police who are facing kids with guns on the streets? Or the fearless firemen who will go into a raging fire to save another human being? Are they not worthy of being in the same bracket as those who choose to join the army and go fight other people?

It's such a shame when people don't seem to have the imagination or mental faculties to acknowledge shades of grey in an argument.

"Those that do not like our military force should try living in an oppressed nation, or maybe a completely anarchic society"? Maybe those who do not like to - or can't be bothered to - read a post in full should try re-reading it and engaging their brain before responding, perhaps.

The issue isn't one of being anti-military - it's more one of the way in which support for the military is expressed. It just seems downright wrong to me - and certainly that there's a whiff of bandwagon-jumping for profit - to have this sacrifice being viewed through the prism of The Sun Says and some cash-in X-Factor charity record.

Where's the reasoned thought? Where's the alternative view to the "all our squaddies are heroes, end of story" mantra? Yes, it's a sh*tty job at times, and there are thousands of them out in Afghanistan right now facing danger as part of it - but aren't we doing everyone - including them - a disservice when we're not using our freedom, which their predecessors won, to be rational, dispassionate and realistic when discussing them?

After all - it's the forces of destructive, unthinking nationalism, dogma and propaganda which our military defeated nearly 65 years ago, and it's the same forces they're fighting in the Middle East right now. It would be a shame if, after all that, the battle was lost on the home front, wouldn't it?

And getting girls pregnant and !!!!!!ing off the other side of the country...

I'm guessing some of you don't live in a town with an army base nearby

A lot of the squaddies are good honest chaps, that is for sure, but there are a not insignificant number who seem to think theyre untouchable.

Don't paint them all as angels as some are as far from it as you can imagine, and get a kick out of shooting people dead for a living.

    oh please,all on their own?
