How goes that "regassing" work then? Some bloke comes to your house with a foot pump and fills it up again?

Someone was telling me in the pub the other night that the liquid in LCD screens leaks out over time, and you have to get ~them~ topped up every five years as well...

Forget about the idea that plasma lasts longer than LCD though, I think most plasma have somthing like 7,000 viewing hours before needing to be re-gassed, which assuming 5 hours TV a day (too much surely!) is still nearly 4 years of TV.
    .

That's right folks, plasma's have to be gassed regularly. I have to re-gas my 8G Pioneer Kuro 42" plasma approx every 6 months, a huge British Gas truck parks up outside my living room, the gas nozzle is fed through the window and into the belly of the telly

I'm a big fan of Panasonic Plasmas and I did a hell of a lot of research before buying my TV. I've had mine a year now and no regrets. When I see other peoples LCDs I think they look awful in comparison, but that's the point - everyone sees TVs differently which is why you should go for the TV you like and think looks best. I mainly watch SD TV, so spent a lot of time in John Lewis turning all the channels over with the poor guy behind me turning them back to their nice HD channels! In my opinion for the same price range then LCDs didn't compare to the Plasma. But an LCD costing an extra £500 did...but I didn't have that sort of budget.

The filling up with gas is a myth. My particular plasma has a life of 100,000 hours, so will technically last 27 years if I had it on 10 hours everyday. I suspect I will have replaced it well before then.

I'd choose LCD over Plasma - in my experience, LCD gives a better crisper picture with better black reproduction. They're also marginally cheaper to run as I believe they draw less power.

If you can afford, go for full 1080p capabilities. HD ready will be 720p which is HD but only just. Mind you, theres not a huge amount of stuff that actually runs at 1080p at the moment - lots of Blue Ray etc runs at 1080i.

Theres so much wrong there I dont know where to begin

Plasmas are WAY past having to be 're-gassed' by about 8 years or more

Plasmas have better blacks (Pioneers are renouned for having the best blacks and theyre all plasmas). The Pioneer A500 has been 'measured' to be the best tv ever made. Its still unbeaten today

The VAST majority of blurays are 1080P

Not so long ago, I had to replace the lens coupling fluid in our old rear projection TV, which was quite a big job. It improved the picture enormously, but alas, it finally went off to TV heaven 4 or 5 months later.
