  • We have just bought LCD Samsung 46" series5 and I'm much satisfied. Plasma has less life than LCD.
  • For LED I guess Samsung is good since they introduce them first.

Hi,I'm on looking for a new television, what's better,LCD or PLASMA?

I'm sure Harry Hill would say, "FIGHT", but I'd say:

Read some comparative reviews from experts in the industry.

If you ask on a forum, in general: anyone with an LCD will say they are best; anyone with a Plasma will say they are best.

No home user has the luxury of putting 10 different models together and comparing picture quality from various inputs in a lab.

And any ideas where the best place to get them from, looking for a 46-50in.cheers.

Also, think about the size of the room and how close you are going to sit to the screen - a 50" screen in a tiny front room can be just far too big and however good the quality of the TV the picture can look a bit blocky if you are very close.

Same as any forum I guess, just like this one ;)

What always gets me is why people would rather ask on a forum first, rather than read some reviews in mags and on-line to at least understand the differences and make a shortlist!

I cant disagree with any of that

Its like some people expect the forum posters to do all the hard work for them

  • On LED TVs (eg Samsung 7000/8000 series) there have been reports of backlight bleeding so i would be hesitant on spending >1k on technology which is still in development, whereas Plasma and LCD have been around for a while and are fairly established technologies.

IMHO if your main use will be for SD viewing then go for a plasma such as a Pioneer 5090 (around 2k) or Panasonic P50V10 (around 1.5k) as plasma tvs generally speaking produce better blacks, handle motion better than LCDs.

On the other hand, if your main use will be for HD content such as Sky HD, bluray movies, gaming etc then go for a LCD as you will find LCDs have a sharper picture when it comes to HD/gaming and also you don't have to worry about the risk of screen burn on plasma (which although is very minimal these days, nevertheless it still exists). Apparently the Sony W5500 LCD series is very highly rated.
