There's not too much between them, for most users the best advice is 'get whatever console your mates have got' so that you can play online, swap games etc.
As the first reply in this thread stated, xbox owners are happy with their choice and PS3 owners are happy with their choice. I'm a PS3 owner, my brother is an xbox owner. We're both happy that we made the right choice
