really a well-worn topic, but i still want to post sth.
Hmm...the PS3 is definitely the more powerful machine. The Xbox 360 also has a 54% failure rate according to some estimates. So when it comes to which is the better MACHINE, PS3 wins.
However, the selection of astounding exclusives that the 360 has to offer is the tipping factor in this debate. With such exclusives as the Gears of War series, Halo series, and the Mass Effect series just to name a few, it's easy to see that the Xbox 360 is superior in game choice. But the PS3 does have some enticing titles such as the Uncharted series and the Killzone series.
But if blue rays are your thing, the PS3 is the only one that can play them.
In my personal opinion, the Xbox is better because of it's game selection (and it's online service, although it does cost $50 for 12 months.)
So I'd say stick with the 360, but it's really up to you.0 -
Decide which of the exclusives you want to play the most i.e. Xbox 360 = Gears of War, Forza, Halo, Left For Dead etc. and PS3 = Gran Turismo, Little Big Planet, Uncharted, Buzz, Singstar etc.
The cross platform games are very similar on each console, some are better on the 360 as that's been the lead platform during development, others are better on the PS3. The differences are not significant on most games.
IMHO the PS3 is the best console for younger gamers, the 360 for hardcore FPS gamers. It has to be said that Uncharted 2 on PS3 is one of the best games I've played and there's probably nothing on the 360 to touch it in terms of graphics.
I've been a gamer for years, I have a PS3 but I'll probably buy a 360 at some point.
Cheers

Whilst I agree with the general thrust of your post, I think the above quote is debatable. The Xbox 360 is more powerful than the PS3 in certain respects, and the PS3 is more powerful in others. The Xbox 360 has had a very high failure rate, but the newer models with the cooler chipsets released at the end of last year have reduced it dramatically.
The Wii is the most reliable console of the three by quite a wide margin, though I think you'd be hard-pushed to find anyone willing to argue it's the better machine.IMHO the PS3 is the best console for younger gamers, the 360 for hardcore FPS gamers.
That's pretty simplistic though. There are lots of great kids' games for the Xbox 360 (just ask my daughter), and lots of great shooters for the PS3.It has to be said that Uncharted 2 on PS3 is one of the best games I've played and there's probably nothing on the 360 to touch it in terms of graphics.
Assassin's Creed 2 looks beautiful (and from what I've read the Xbox 360 version has better graphics, higher frame-rates, and faster load times than the PS3 version), as do Alan Wake and Splinter Cell:Conviction (both Xbox 360 exclusives).0 -
If Facebook is your thing, well it's coming to the PS3...................
Have to say, the first implementation (in the 3.10 firmware) is pretty poor...it's more a case of your PS3 account (trophies/achievements etc) being linked to your facebook profile rather than having a proper facebook interface that you can use (that's still confined to visiting the site using the web browser). I expect future versions to be much improved and better intergrated like iPlayer though..."Who throws a shoe, honestly?"

We have a PS2 (which they also have to share) and this has been pretty good - but I don't like to spend money on something that has a poor track record for reliability: especially since these items are not (at least to my mind) in any way reasonably priced!
Are they repairable, and what sort of costs does this involve?
Like all machines some are prone to failure, Xbox 360's are alot better built these days but like anything they can fail.
I have seen numerous posts on other forums about the PS3 dying with YLOD (Yellow lights of death).
As a parent you gonna have to way up costs such as will they both be allowed to play it online?
Will they need wireless connections to play in games together?
Imo if the answer to the two questions above are yes than a PS3 would be more ideal as it's free online and wireless out of the box.
You will have to pay to use Xbox live on the 360 and you will need a wireless adaptor which ain't cheap, So if it comes down to which is the cheapest option for you then PS3 would be the way to go.
I prefer Xbox live has I feel it's a much better service and I prefer the 360 for other reasons so cost does not matter to me.
Just think if you get them one each and they want the same games, That's you buying 2 copies each time working out to like £80 for both. Pain in the bum as I have to buy 2 360 games because my partner has her own 360.
Some good deals going around at the moment on the internet so would be a good time to buy.
Good luck.0 -

I was actually trying to give a balanced opinion, you're obviously a 360 fanboy . I stand by my comment of the PS3 being a better console for kids although I think the Wii is actually the best console for younger kids.
Assassin's Creed does look good, apart from the faces. Have you played Uncharted, there are some breathtaking views in that game?0
