Please advise any good reasons to choose one over the other?

Yes, it has been discussed many times.
You'll find that Xbox 360 owners (such as myself) will recommend the Xbox 360, and Playstation 3 owners will recommend the Playstation 3.
The Xbox 360 has a larger game library, and many cross-platform games (i.e. games available for both systems) are better on the Xbox. The Xbox 360 also has a larger library of exclusive titles. The Xbox does not come with wireless internet, so if you want to play online, you need to connect it to your router with an ethernet cable, or buy the wireless adapter (about £40 from Amazon). You need to pay to play online with the Xbox, though many people think it offers a better online experience than the Playstation 3 does. It is very easy to stream media from Windows Media Centre to the Xbox. The Xbox 360 does not have a Blu-ray drive.
The Playstation 3 comes with a Blu-ray drive, and it makes a very good Blu-ray player. It comes with wireless internet as standard, and it's free to play online with it. It has a smaller games library than the Xbox 360 and less exclusive titles (though it still has a lot of great games). It has a (pretty lame) web browser, though you can watch BBC iPlayer on it.
I'm happy with my Xbox; PS 3 owners are happy with their PS 3. They're both amazing consoles, and you really can't go wrong with either. The best way to choose between them is probably to go to a store that sells video games, and see which console has the games you want to play. If you want to play Uncharted, the Xbox 360 isn't a great choice. Similarly, if you're a Halo nut, there's not much point buying a Playstation 3.0 -
If you're buying it as a gift, it's worth finding out what the person's friends have. Most people I know prefer the one that they can play online with their mates.0

its worth adding that the 360 now has that new sky thing
also the ps3 is a great dvd upscaler and is in my opinion just as easy to stream media to from a pc. oh and it too has its own dedicated tv service for a small fee.
its aso worth noting the lower failure rate of the ps3 even with the new jasper??? chip on the 360 or whatever its called. and its foreseeable longevity as a console(disputable whether this is good or bad)Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -
Thanks Guys,
My interest is mostly strategy rather than shoot em up games and there does seem to be a better selection of those for X Box.
Add the price of a wireless modem to X Box Elite makes it is equal to PS3.
I already have a good Blu Ray so that is not a consideration for me.

My boys are after an X-box (between them) for Christmas. Is there really such a bad failure rate on Xbox? We have a PS2 (which they also have to share) and this has been pretty good - but I don't like to spend money on something that has a poor track record for reliability: especially since these items are not (at least to my mind) in any way reasonably priced!
Are they repairable, and what sort of costs does this involve?"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -
We got our Xbox live from Jasper ...Type that and xbox live into google .

It seems that only the OP managed to get that deal. A.n.others have reported it does not work. I don't think I will be successful, but have reserved it @ my local Argos and will find out tomorrow"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

The failure rate is supposed to be less with the newer chipsets. The main failure is called the Red Ring Of Death (RROD). The Xbox has a years warranty as standard, but an extra 2 years for machines that get the RROD.
There are no costs involved for a RROD failure. The Xbox is picked up free, repaired/replaced for free and sent back free.Dave. :wave:0
