been reading on other forums that o2, orange & voda will have the nokia n900 in the next couple of weeks, maybe as soon as the 16th november, so lets see who will be doing the best deals.0
-
Mobile Phones Direct are taking pre-orders saying it will be available "mid November". They've got them on Vodafone from £35 a month, free phone.0
-
it started shipping yesterday but no worthwhile contract deals available yet, just 2 year vodaphone deals.0

Be a bit cautious with N900 though. Nokia's N97 has lots of issues. That was a Symbian phone on which Nokia had years of expertise. N900 features a brand new OS (Linux Maemo) so it will be interesting to see first few months how it works. Chances are it might need to go thru several firmware updates before it becomes stable.
In Nokia Europe forum, members claim that Nokia released N97 too early and used common public as beta testers (with a hefty price tag).Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0 -
in fairness linux development has been going on for decades, its just recently that phones got powerful for it to be useful.
nobody isnt claiming the n97 wasnt warmed over poo but the os in the n900 is why people want it.0 -
No MMS on this phone? whats the point having 5mp camera yet no MMS? Crazy0

Be aware that Maemo isn't new. In fact this is the 5th version.

Plus it has an active development community that quite old. I look forward to getting this phone.0 -

It is strange indeed that there is no listed MMS support, however I'd be surprised if it is not in development for release very shortly (if not already on the phones). Nokia have held this phone back for arguably 2 months or more now for further development and refinements - it's quite likely this will be one of those refinements.
As for the MMS / 5MP camera - there is actually a limit on most networks of 100-300k (ish - this is not hard and fast by any means). It is extremely unlikely you'd ever manage to take a photo at that resolution and send it as it is via MMS, some compression is inevitable.
Incidentally, for those of you who are unaware... this phone's platform (Maemo) is massively advanced compared to previous Nokia phones (running Symbian) in terms of updating. Updates can be done in small chunks or large updates (the whole thing in one go) by Nokia and the system will feature a built-in update manager as on many desktop PCs which will enable you to update on-the-fly as it were, with no data loss or reinstalling issues. So, if an MMS update were to come out, it should be pretty painless and easy to install on your phone.
And finally - I'm unsure exactly what the terms of a Vodafone "Pay as you go" are on this site:
nokiaretail.co.uk/Brands/Nokia/Nseries-Multimedia-Phones/sb489/p26078.htm
but assuming that it literally means pay as you go, ie. no line rental, then you can get yourself an effectively SIM-free n900 there "on Vodafone" for £392.99 which is certainly the best that I've seen it at. If I've misunderstood this and there is some recurring monthly charge I'd appreciate someone clearing that up for me as this is looking quite tempting!

Is Mobile Phones Direct trustworthy? They have come up time and time again when searching for the N900 and is the cheapest, but I have no experience of them.0
