Reading more of these posts prompts me to reply. I’m no lover of HDNL even though I work for them. I could tell you many tales on how drivers are treated by the company. Don’t blame the drivers for everything. You say you wont use HDNL so that means you wont use MS, Tesco, Sainsburys, Argos, Littlewoods, The White Co, Virgin Wines, John Lewis, Very , Boots, Dunelms, Amazon but to name just a few. Hdnl is not a small company! I’m not sure how many parcel companies like Parcel Force deliver but HDNL is hitting 300,000 per day. You will have complaints from figures like this; ALL delivery companies have customers with bad experiences. There is no excuse for putting breakable items over side gates and it is not endorsed by the HDNL management. However if you are paying a driver peanuts for his job then the service sometimes suffers. I myself only place items over the side gate If certain criteria are met e.g. Not breakable, Not likely to get wet (plastic bags not boxes) Not likely to be eaten by the dog or cat. Believe it or not most customers who are regulars actually ask me to put items over their gates. Going back to bad practices I have to say the worst are Royal Mail. I myself have delivered to many addresses where Royal Mail delivery has just taken place. Guess what? Normally they are left in plain view on the doorstep. I even move some of these parcels a few inches to try to make them more secure, why? Because if I leave an item hidden near the front door a thief will see the Royal Mail parcel and may see the HDNL parcel so loosing both items. I have personally had over 30 letters go , "MISSING" never to be seen again. Also 3 lost parcels in 2 years !!!
Things may not be perfect at HDNL but they are sure worse at other companies. Also remember that Royal Mail are state owned so who pays for their losses? You the taxpayer!

HDNL, i know you have a bad experience working for them but as a customer my main problem is their nearest depot is over 20 miles away from me!!

With royal mail and parcelforce the sorting office is on my way to work and open convenient hours (evenings, early mornings) so if I am out when they deliver it take 10 mins from my day to go and get the package... with HDNL I have no option but to arrange redelivery IF I CAN or tell them to send the item back :(

(Parcelforce even will drop at my local PO which is down my road!)

HDNLMAN - I agree with pretty much everything you've said. PF's volumes are similar to HDNL's, but they put the resource in to ensure the customer service side doesn't suffer (CS is the company's latest focus). HDNL, like DPD and Citylink and some others, have attracted the high-volume customer purely on price. Unfortunately, the lower revenue means that the courier has to cut costs to the bone, meaning less CS and underpaid/overworked drivers.

Most courier companies have a no-doorstepping policy, but they all seem to turn a blind eye as long as they don't get too many complaints.

Hope you manage to make it to Christmas with your sanity, and that the snow isn't causing you too many problems.

    nice attack on RM
however given RM are in profit i dont see your point?
i think given size & items delivered per day HDNL seem to generate far more complaints on the forum
  • I much prefer Royal Mail delivering my parcels than HDNL, as they've always been quicker and always arrive before 1pm. The collection office is also only 5 minutes walk away so I don't have to go out of my way to stay in until the delivery comes, as I can just pop down the next day and get it myself. And on the plus side we're quite friendly with our Postmen so they're unlikely to leave it outside.

LOOOOOOL ! Dont want to distract this thread from the main issue but as far as I can see they only made a profit due to the wholesale cut of local post offices about 2500 of them! and their new letter format which btw is a total rip off. I believe also that the Royal Mail has a monster pension deficet of a around £10 billion !!!! :eek:still to take care of. Maybe the Royal Mail as we all know it wont be around much longer? On the other hand who would buy a company with a 10 billion pension debt? Lastly I alone have complained more to Royal Mail than all the people on this thread put together. Im constantly writing apology emails to people I sell items to on ebay regarding their LOST items.

Heres but a few in just a couple of weeks, all sent 1st class post DAY AFTER SALE : (everypost a different buyer)

ah the pension deficit, you mean while the company(eg government) took a 13 year holiday from their pension payments?
the workers paid in all this time and the goverment said it was all fine due to the level of profit RM were making.
so the 'tax payer' got 13 years of cash

feel free to start any RM thread you like however if your company struggles with 300K how will it cope with 75 million a day without the added xmas pressure?
just seems sad to slate another company when trying to defend your own?
why not send all your eBay items via courier then you wont have any problems?

Lol at the holiday joke. As for how they could cope with 75 million items? Who cares . I dont get big fat bonuses. Im just a sardine in the parcel ocean. Thats for big fish to decided. I did however read somewhere that all parcel companies are geared to maximum , in other words they operate at the exact capacity to their intakes. Any sudden access and they will struggle. This may have happened to HDNL when they took the big Amazon contract so close to christmas. I have seen a big increase in drivers but that takes time to filter through. Im not a fan of HDNL however I think they will become bigger and stronger. Which in turn may be worse for the drivers. Maybe I should join the Royal Mail?
