My favourite is:
Wine: Dumisani Chenin Blanc
Year: dunno!
Price: 3 for £10
Where: Asda
Not sure of inidivual price sorry, I only ever do the 3 for a tenner deal.
Its quite dry and light, nice enough to give as a present as well, and the offer seems to be pretty much permanent, I've bene buying it at this price for a few years now.Jan GC: £202.65/£450 (as of 4-1-12)
NSDs: 3
Walk to school: 2/47
Bloater challenge: £0/0lbs0 -
I shop at Tesco, Morrison's, Co-op and Lidl's - Lidl's (for red wine) is not only cheaper but far superior quality to Tesco's cheaper end (no comparison) - Co-op next best for their weekly deals, but prices have gone up more recently - they do a Chilean "Long Slim" still under £4, around 12.5 %, reliably good.
VERY BEST: Lidl's South African and Chilean reds (incl. a lovely merlot, pinotage (got a box full for xmas, £3 a bottle a few weeks ago), cabernet sauvignon/cab. sauv. shiraz) - think these are the best at the mo, all for under £4 - also do a S.A. box working out at £3.33 a bottle - most of these come under the Cimarosa label which is reliably scrumptious (and strong - 13.5/14%) - Tesco's cheapos? Pants!!
Also if you prefer the lighter reds (Italian/spanish) Lidl's go even cheaper on these.
If it's still out there - Lidls' had a great ginger wine couple of weeks back - better flavour than other own brands; at under £3 a bottle, around 13+% (forgotten exactly - too much testing) great value plonk (Morrison's also do a good own brand, Tesco's a bit too sweet, Aldi's also ok - all for under £3 I think, definitely under £4) - great cockle warmer.

You really need to check out the 3 for £10 at Tesco - on offer there that price works out at £3.33 a bottle!
I'm not into wine but friends that I've served it to have been amazed at the value:beer:0 -
Sign up to Laithwaite's Spanish wine plan and you get a great offer which amounts you you paying less than £3.50 a bottle for 12. You have to sign up to a plan where you get wine delivered every 3 months but you can cancel that after your first delivery ten wait for their next silly offer to come out! I have been ordering from them for about a year and have never had a bottle that I didn't like.
For some reason this site won't let me add web links but you will find it at
"laithwaites" dot com forwards slash "spainoffer"

Further to my post about Netto - shouldn't be doing this as everyone will go out and buy our favourite wines. Happened once with a superb, reasonable champagne that we enjoyed - recommended on BBC2's Food and Drink (a few years ago) and we never saw it again.
However, if you want a really good Chardonnay - depth of taste, fruity and 13%, suggest you go for 'Santiago 1541', Chilean, currently 2009. Brilliant. (£3.49) Also, for a chardonnay/malvasia gape, try Ravelli 2008 Bianco di Puglia (£2.99). But please leave some for us!0 -
You are so right about the Cimarosa label - the best Merlot I have ever drunk was the one currently for sale at Lidl on this label. Anything under this label is great!0

"My fave's a jubbly Spanish red/white from Tesco's bottom shelf called Marques de Leon, at £2.87 for 70cl (plus 4 Clubcard points per bottle) Although it's probably the cheapest plonk on there shelves, I've never had a bum bottle in 3 years of use (with the occasional day off.Lol"
Somewhat against my better judgement.. at this very low price..I tried a bottle (red). It might just be ok for adding to a coq au vin but that's it afaI am concerned..or maybe its a gem and I am just unlucky with the bottle today!?0 -
Name of the wine: Lindemans Cawarra Cabernet Merlot
Year: ?
Price: £3.99
Where to buy: Netto
Why you like it: Smooth mellow slightly smoky. It never lasts long in our house. We generally prefer the new world wines and red rather than white. Wolf Blass Eaglehawk is another favourite especially when we can finf it on offer.0 -
Wine: Cuvee Pecheur
Year: 2008 (but their vintages have been very consistent in the past)
Price: £3.99
Where: Waitrose
Lovely, fresh, clean and well-balanced white. Good fruit on the nose but very dry and crisp on the palate. A perfect everyday drinking wine that works as well on its own as it does with food (chicken, seafood, salads, a lot of pasta dishes).Operation Get in Shape

There's plenty of wine under a fiver that's good.
I think the real challenge is to find a decent wine under £4 in this country!
I'd suggest:
from ALDI
Viña Decana Crianza
£3.99 *
Villa Malizia Chianti Superiore
£3.99 *
Collezione Italiana Montepulciano D'Abruzzo
£3.29 *
