I got several bags full of unwanted books of an old neighbour recently. most were ok, some had covers and pages missing.
ive cut them up for hm cards, gift tags, as decoupage paper, made them into hm gift bows, and kept centre pages (from old fashioned 'sewn' books iukwim) as gift wrap for small items. (old maps are fab for this). ORIGAMI! use pages good enough to make shapes etc, mobiles and decor and gifts. gift bags and boxes without staples or celloptape.
the rest ive ripped up into the paper recycling bin, and have a pile of book spines/covers- will try the council under cardboard- thanks.0 -
There used to be a website that suggested leaving books on buses, trains etc, so that others could read them - they had little slips you could print out to leave in the book so that people could find out what it was for. The idea was that once read, the books should be left again so that someone else could pick them up. I can't for the life of me remember what it was called ... book-something I think. I've been meaning to do this with a few books of mine for a while now.0

I think there is more info on the freebies board. Readitswapit is great, I've been using it for quite a while now and I've never read so much, I managed to swap all my original books and now I'm swapping books I got from the site, I've got so many unread books now I'll be going for ages.
I've found that postage second class is 55p- £1 but usually nearer 55p
I just wish there was a similar site for CDs and DVDs, all sites I've found don't seem to be totally free and are more complicated than readitswapit.
A standard sizes paperback is too big to go as a large letter so has to go as a packet and will cost £1.52. Only thin books can squash in as a large letter, but that includes a lot of the older style pulp fiction, sci fi etc.

I like http://www.bookcrossing.com as well, basically you send your books out into the wild and people try to find them! It's fun and you can join book rings/rays as well (a ring is where the book goes back to it's original owner, a ray is way it ends up in the wild at the end) if you find a book you want that is being offered out! Great site :-)Comping, freebieing and trying to pay the mortgage off early!0

I use both of these, love the idea of bookcrossing but you send the book off and you may never hear from it again, also you may never pick one up again
Readitswapit, whilst you have to pay the postage charge for swapping a book it does at least meany you get something in return0 -
This is a regular event held at Redbridge, Ilford in Essex - free shuttle transfer from Ilford rail station (one railway) or Gants Hill underground station (Central line).
11.30am - 7pm. Sounds like there's loads going on with over a hundred stalls, dance and music, environmentally centred stalls, solar powered cinema, fair trade. Sounds great and there will be a Bookcrossing stall with loads of free books - this is how I found out about it, a Bookcrossing contact is taking a stall so I'm going along to support her.
Copy of the advertising flyer (takes a minute or two to load)
