Recycling Books (merged threads)

I'm having a bit of a de-clutter before I move in two weeks' time, and have discovered several books that I have gotten free with magazines over the last year or so. What should I do with them? They all say on them that they came free with "blah blah" magazine and that they are not for resale. Normally I would take them down to my local charity shop, but seeing as they cannot be resold I fear I'd just be passing on my useless rubbish!!

I don't want to just bin them, so I think recycling them is going to be the best bet (can I recycle books?!) unless anybody can think of a better use for them?

Hi there,

Perhaps you could offer them on Freecycle? If no one wants them then you won't feel so bad in getting rid of them. Maybe a school jumble sale? Could offer one free book with each book purchased?

Hi - along the same lines, my dad was telling me that one charity shop where I live quite happily sells the free DVDs you get with the newspapers, whereas another he offered some to refused to take them because people moan that they could have got it free in the newspapers and suggest that the charity shop is somehow trying to rip them off. (The moaners sound somewhat petty to me because 1) it IS a charity shop, so surely the idea is that you are giving to charity and getting something in return so why begrudge the 20p of whatever they are charging - after all you would have paid more for the newspaper and 2) if you don't like it then just don't buy it - no one is forcing you!)

So I would suggest maybe offering them to the charity shop and see if they want them. Alternatively, is there a old people's home, hospital, sheltered housing etc near to you that keeps a reading shelf for their residents who could make use of them?

Thanks for the replies - I'll try down the charity shop [a different one to usual as my "preferred" one refused the freebie CDs I offered!] and if not I'll see if I can offload them on freecycle or something

Edited to add: Oooh I live opposite the hospital so I may see if they want them as they are trashy feel-good chick-lit books which may go well in a hospital environment...

You could try www.readitswapit - you'd just put a note in the description that it was a book that came with a magazine or whatever. If you haven't looked at the site before it's a great way to swap books, you only pay for the postage of the book you're sending off - so don't list very heavy ones!

I take them down to the local library....they help the Friends of the Library.

Gonna start doing that jw...could leave them anywhere, park bench, train, bus, even the library.
