  • I am joing in too (even though a little late :o )
I move house in two weeks today and have to clear fridge and freezer (which contains lots of yummy meat - will inventory and post later in hope of some advice and recipe ideas) !!!

So, I need to use up as much as is possible in about 12 days so we can fully defrost the fridge and freezer for removal.

I know I will need a couple of freah staples like milk, etc but should have enough to make quite a few tasty meals.

Oh and if anyone could give any advice on finger foods for my ds who is 11 months and refusing to eat anything he can't pick up  , I'd be very very grateful !
  • just one more thing . . . had planned to go for it old style by making a soup using the carcass and leftover chickeny bits from an organic chicken we had for tea with some friends the other night, but instead of turning the pan down to simmer when it began to boil (as I thought I had), I actually turned on another ring on low, so when I went in after an hour to check both pans were black - including a very blackened chicken carcass !!!

BUT I am still undeterred - I will not be put off - although I think I may have killed my big pan ?

    Hello and welcome!

Am not an expert with kiddie food so will leave others to answer that qu but just wanted to say that I'm pleased you're joining us!

As for the burnt pans - I always put in some water and a squirt of washing up liquid and put them back on a low heat to soften up the burnt bits. Then give it some elbow grease with a pan scrubber!

i want to join in but i have so much food in it wouldn't really be a challenge. i don't know why even on my £200 budget. i still seem to go shopping every week when cupboards arre full. i know many peeps would love to have what i have in the cupboards when i say their no food. i think what i mean is i have no chocolate. but i must stop. i feel so guilty.

but as for finger food. my son is also 11m and going through the same. although he doesn't mind dinner and breakfast fed to him, but lunch he has to do.

when my hubby is out i just let my son get mucky and try to feed himself. it the only way to learn. he does really well, but everything generally needs washing. but hey ho. but finger food he loves is toast, with cheese on , jam , marmite, peanut butter. well any thing on it really. also he loves ryvita with just butter, sticks of cheese , carrot sticks, rice cakes, iceland vegtable fingers. ( one of my fav's aswell, although not very old style ) . i just made some bread rolls and the kids are loving them.most things can be adapted when u think. also any fruit can be cut up .at the mo my son loves necturine's.also sandwichs with any filling.

spag bol is fun for them to eat. my two kids love it, but very messy.

    Hi jcr16 -
    welcome and don't feel guilty!

We are all here for different reasons - my motivation to use up what's in my storecupboard is simply to try to save more for holidays and things that I will remember for a bit longer than that random takeaway that I so often used to order!

What I'm 'gaining' from the challenge isn't simply financial (lol, just as well if you check out my signature!) .. I'm also learning new recipes and cooking things I've never eaten before! It's great!

I always find simmering with cheap washing powder helps too

  • Hello again folks, I'm still doing really well on the storecupboard challenge. Last night managed to use up last of one jar of Korma curry paste, tin of chickpeas, tin of value chopped toms and other veg in fridge to make a delicious veggie curry. Had some for tea and managed to freeze three portions for another time - really can't eat the same thing night after night.

Freezer is looking a lot lighter as are the cupboards and fridge. So far food budget this month stands at around £56 - which includes some wine (to go and visit friends) and washing tablets from Lidl.

    Well done Garden millie

I have not been brilliant this week, but am going to have a cooking day tomorrow and make HM 'ready meals' for the freezer for next week. That seems to work better for me than planning separate meals to cook each night.

Wow - it doesn't seem like a fortnight since I last posted as I have been working hard at my storecupboard challenge and managed to come in just over £5 under budget on groceries this month! I took my 'progress' signature away after some sarcastic comments on another thread (you always get a few, don't you....). But for me the month was a success - I used up loads in the cupboards and freezer, and although I've just done a big shop for next month, I have done so with a better idea of what I will be using it all for!

And I have a whole load of frozen ready meals still that I'll be using up as part of next month's challenge - during which, I'll be trying to lose weight while saving money! If you're interested, then the new challenge link is: July Challenge: Lose weight while saving money!

    Thanks for your support everyone!
