July Challenge: Losing weight while saving money!

Options
Summer is here and yet again I don't feel brave enough to bare all in a bikini  .... but I have a big family celebration at the end of September and so I thought I would take advantage of the next few months to try to lose some weight and get fit... but I want to do it all while spending as little as possible! :D

I know there is a seperate weight loss thread, but I've started this one, beacuse, rather than ask for support and encouragement towards a particular weight loss goal (although I do have one!), I wanted to ask for Old Style tips and help with the process of losing weight and becoming fitter ... on a shoestring. ;)

What I particularly want to do is not give up on eating delicious food - I've learned so much from these boards that I just want to adapt the recipes and things I've learned, rather than feel deprived because I am trying to eat less :o

My Week 1 targets are:

1 Find the cheapest gym membership possible
I know that walking and running etc are free, but have decided that I will join a gym as a quick win, because I know that this has worked for me in the past.

So: does anyone have tips about which health club chains are running special offers/low joining fee/ no comitment deals at the moment? Any tips on how to barter?

2 Adapt 3 Old Style recipes to make fabulous low-calorie alternatives.
I like big, exotic meals and so want to find low-calorie versions of my favourites (italian, asian and spanish are particular favourites)

So: Does anyone have any tried and tested favourite recipes to share?

3 Take a cheap but exciting low-cal lunch to work each day

All we have is a kettle and a fridge - no cooking facilities are available

So: Does anyone have any lunch-bag ideas to share?

And, just as important - does anyone else want to join in and post their own challenges here so others can help? :T

Hope to hear from you soon! :j

    Hi annie,

This has the potential to be a great thread, but can I ask everyone to try to keep it Moneysaving Old Style, as if it turns into a general lose weight support thread it will need to be moved to the I wanna board and merged with the original lose weight thread.

For advice on finding cheap gym membership the best place to ask is the I wanna board....in the meantime these older threads might help:

    I wanna join the gym

    Gym membership

For weight loss recipes have a look at this thread:

    Losing Weight Recipes Collection

Good luck to every one trying to lose weight the Old Style way. :)

OK, well as part of my moneysaving/healthy diet this week, I'd like to try making myself some lo-cal snacks. I love crisps! Does anyone know how I could make my own vegetable crisps - I am thinking that I could slice beetroot, carrot and parsnip very thinly and bake using 1-cal spray? But does anyone know for sure so I don't end up wasting money..... ;)

    Hi annie,

It should work with the one cal spray. Have a look at these older threads for hints and tips on making vegetable crisps:

    Vegtable Crisps

Posh crisps from root vegetables- recipe anyone?

Wow - I have looked at the recipes and had never before thought of using the microwave to make crisps... I will try it and report back!

I would also love to join. I actually started just this challenge today before I came online and read the thread.

I had already promised to have brunch out with a friend. The cafe had porridge with chopped banana at £1.70 which was good eating and cost wise.
Went to the supermarket this evening. I got some good money saving food for my diet.
8 muller light yoghurts reduced to 10p each.
    A cabbage to 9p
    net of tangerines to 19p
cooked chicken legs at 3 for 50p.
    feta cheese recuded to 10p
2 packs wholemeal pitta at 5p each.
2 packs vine tomatoes at 19 p each.

Came home and went for a 45 minute walk.
