Hi Guys
It's great to hear everyone else's progress and see that there are up's and down's with everyone's financial shenanigans. Welcome to the newbies also.
When I did my spending forecast for June I calculated that I had a laughable £5 available to put towards my 1st June OP
I sulked a little, threatened to throw a tantrum, then decided to ignore the situation for a couple of weeks. In the meantime I completely forgot to change my OP SO and so exactly the same went out of my bank account on the 1st as it did the month before (£40). 'Oops' I thought with a devilish chuckle. Anyway, since then a weekend away cost less than I thought, car insurance is costing a little less than I had budgeted for and a few other nip tucks here and there, shaving off surplus balances from various accounts and some extra income all contributed to an additional £100 being OP'd yesterday over the counter at branch. Am not sure whether its healthy but god do I feel smug OP'ing in person.
The cashier, bless her, noticed that I was on a variable rate. 'Yes' I replied 'Your Standard Variable Rate'. Would I like an appointment to review? Nope. Was I aware that I was paying too much. Ooohh FATAL ERROR - I quickly briefed her on her range of 'products' and their cost vs 'benefit' in my circumstances. Gosh I still sound smug.
So my otherwise, measly £140has now brought my total OP's to £1194 so far, so am more than half way to my target of £2000 for this year. Am not predicting a large OP for next month either because until August I am paying into a regular saver account at 5% gross. I put anything between £150 and £500 per month into that - as much as I can squeeze upto the max. Once it's over then I will use some of the closing balance to make an OP and then use the 'surplus' budget to increase my monthly OP.
Ah hang on........I remembered I have the antidote for my smugness. This morning, half asleep, I accidentally bid a little too much on an item on ebay and ended up paying £4.50 (Incl p&p) when it's £4.99 in the shop. I am so flipping annoyed with myself for only reaping a 0.49p benefit on an item that was meant to be a treat. Grrrrrr.
Googledocs updated Cake. Thanks for the thread and therefore the motivation!0 -
Smug is good sometimes curlygirl
Hmmm, 49p saved....... = 49p overpayment I hopeA positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

Morning All,
We're off to the races now! A wee bit of financial jiggery pokery and a small inheritance has lopped another month off the mortgage. It will still be tight but the July payment will be a net £3,750 and four further £3,000 net payments will see the mortgage cleared on 1 November 2010. It might be even easier as there may need to be a few hundred pounds left to sit as I assume I can't just log on and take the balance to zero. I'm going to have a wonderful wander into HSBC in September / October to find out exactly what I have to do and what I'm allowed to do. I'll try my best not to mention the anticipated £28,000 interest they expected of me has actually amounted to just a touch over £2,000 in the last 20 months and is now coming in at around £20 per month!
I presume the just in case notion stands that at our mortgage rate at the moment of 0.89% above the base rate, we'd be daft to pay it off in full and close the mortgage as, should the unlikely situation arise that we need to quickly get our hands on some money, we won't beat the option of dipping back into the mortgage? We are planning on a new toilet, bathroom, kitchen and doors throughout the house in 2011 but the full intention to to be good moneysavers and get these things as we can afford them without credit or interest.
Well done again to everyone for the overpayments made and the encouragement given. As much as I enjoy being spurred on by this group, I cannot wait to be one cheering on from the sidelines! Just the 148 days to go now...
Cheers,
