The harsh truth about Tory policies

The trouble is if you whack up the taxes on rich people they just spend more on avoiding taxes. When Howe and later Lawson cut the top rate of income tax as Thatcher's Chancellors tax take went up.
Although often quoted as justifying (relatively) low tax on high incomes, I've never seen a proper analysis of this view.
The Thatcher period was also characterised by lots of other changes (including financial service deregualtion and privatisation ) which collectively meant the pay diffferential between the company 'average' and 'board/senior management ' widened considerably (and seems to be widening still.
This could have explained the greater tax take and not the reduce rate rates.0 -

I agree. I'm not actually for raising taxes on the rich. I'm not even sure I agree with the 50% tax rate. I just get sick of posters focusing on the poor and never having a pop at the rich. I couldn't live on benefits. It must be truly awful. If you keep doing what you've always done - you will keep getting what you've always got.0 -

Any idea of a further fiscal stimulus is a pipe dream- even Alastair Darling only spent a paltry 2% of GDP because the cupboard was totally bare.
I agree, I agree. But kicking out at the poor as if this is somehow their fault is mad. They didn't get us in this mess.If you keep doing what you've always done - you will keep getting what you've always got.0 -

The total amount paid out in benefits last year exceeded the total amount of money raised from income tax.
A completely unsustainable situation.
I'm pretty sure "the poor", or rather benefits recipients, are exactly what got us in this mess.....“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

So let's reduce their benefits then. What do you think will happen ? Do you think people will just sit meekly while they starve and you live it up on £120 caviar? I think not. I believe in a well funded welfare state because I am selfish and I don't want to be mugged, burgled and live in a country were class war is the norm.If you keep doing what you've always done - you will keep getting what you've always got.0 -

If people had a simple choice, work hard or starve, I bet this country would be back as a world superpower overnight. We have a lot of mettle and intellect. Unfortunately, we only see it when we are pushed into a corner.
People don't just have a choice to work or starve do they? If there are no jobs then they can't work, so faced with starving they steal and mug. So yes you may well get pushed in to a corner but the outcome may not be as you expect. If you keep doing what you've always done - you will keep getting what you've always got.0 -

Oh good grief.... It's hardly going to cause mass crime epidemics and class warfare to make people get off their fat lazy asses and work for a living.
We cannot afford to continue paying benefits to people who are able to work. If there are no jobs for them, then they should work for their benefits. I'm sure there are many things society needs doing, sweeping streets, picking up litter, looking after the elderly, etc.
A situation where more money is paid in benefits than is raised in income taxes is absolutely unsustainable.
It's really that simple.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

But who has suggested letting people starve?
There should always be a safety net. That safety net should consist of benefits for a limited time, and then dormitory accomodation and canteens, with an attached job centre, thereafter.
Benefits are not sustainable for anyone other than those who genuinely need them, the disabled, etc. And most do not.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

People in poverty dont always have fat asses.
Obesity is a real problem amongst those in poverty.
Which makes you wonder about our definition of poverty, really.....
The obesity epidemic has nothing on the sockpuppet epidemic though...“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
