sorry but she wouldnt be getting it from me. if she wanted it then it should have been in the basket / trolley not with all the other food being offered for sale.

the age card wouldnt work for me either I'm afraid no-one has the god given right to something just because they are aolder than me and in addition plenty of people have money problems regardless of age and I wouldnt give it to them either.
    :o
  • If there was anything to indicate the old lady was telling the truth, I would err on the side of handing the steak over. However, if there was nothing to indicate that the old lady had even seen the deal prior to seeing it in my hand, I would revert to my personal opinion of the lady in question...

If she looked somewhat upset, while at the same time having a reasonable
demeanour, I would reluctantly hand her the steak [while attempting not to show my dissapointment]. That said, if the old lady was aggressive, I would consider the merits of my decision over a nice steak dinner.
  • Sorry old lady but you put it back on the shelf and all's fair in love and war and bargain hunting in these times.
mmmm, still seeking something witty to be my auto-signature . . . so this will have to suffice for now ;)
  • No she shouldn't give the LOL the steak! If LOL wanted it, it would have been in her cart until she decided. On the shelf (or in the cooler) t's free game and the LOL has a lot of nerve to ask for it!

It's not a question of manners, it's simple logic. Everything is up for sale to anyone in a store until you pay for it at the till. Until then, it's fair game, especially when it's back on the shelf.

If LOL had the meat in her cart and Gwyneth took it out, that would be a totally different argument, but that was not the scenario presented.

The meat is Gwyneth's unless she decides to go over the top and give it to the impolite old biddy who thinks she has dibs on it!

No, I wouldn't let the older lady have the steak; she should have put it in her basket. The moment it had left her hands and was back on the shelf, it was there for anyone else to pick up. I would be polite about it, and (if it was a large piece of steak) offer to cut it in half if she gave me 25p, but fair's fair and the older lady shouldn't have put it back on the shelf. That steak's coming home for me and my dog!

I'm sure Gwyneth would be doing the older lady a favour by claiming the steak anyway. She shouldn't be chewing on that stuff. Not with those teeth... ;-)
  • No, she should keep it herself. Warning: Old ladies can be very manipulative & dangerous (watch out for those trollies on wheels)! Just because she's old doesn't entitle her to the steak - that would be age discrimination! Had she really just put it down or is she fibbing? Why did she put it down if she wanted it? That said, because of the way I was brought up, I probably wouldn't then enjoy the steak anyway - I'd feel guilty, so I'd let the manipulative & dangerous old lady have it and console myself with the knowledge that I too (if I'm lucky) will be an old lady one day ... and then I get to be manipulating & dangerous!!! :rotfl:

I think that if the old lady had picked it up she would have put it in her basket and not put it back down. I think she's trying to play the sympathy card being an old lady. If it was there on the shelf then I think Gwyneth is within her rights to pick it up. On the other hand she may feel sorry for the old lady and think that her need is greater.
  • haha, everyone seems to have the same idea as me.

I'm 6foot3, and when I worked at Morrisons when I was 16, it was usually my job to do all of the mark downs. At first I was more than happy to do this because it meant less cleaning for me later, but then as more and more lol's started to ask if I was going to reduce things further I started to just leave the prices at full and throw more away. Things in the reduced bays are bedlam! If it came down to both myself and lol reaching for the steak at the same time, then sure I would let her have it, but as has already been said, lol's are losing their manners...soooo nope, it is mine :D

{A}sk yourself 'What contributes more to the sum of human happiness?'. Then your course of action is obvious.

But only if the universal definition of morality is "whatever contributes more to the sum of human happiness".

    Imagine this situation:
There are ten people in hospital who need a different organ transplanted and will otherwise die within hours. No organs are available... until a healthy man walks through the door. If all that matters is the sum of human happiness, the morally right thing to do would be to murder the man to harvest his organs. One life lost; ten lives saved.

In any case, I would only hand the steak to the little old lady if I really thought she had made a genuine mis-steak. She should have placed it in her basket/trolley/bag if she wanted to buy it.
  • Tell her to sling her hook. Pensioners these days have never been so well off if my dads an example. Despite a tiny works pension of £29 a week he finds it impossible to spend what he has coming in.

Can you imagine what the reaction would be if the position was reversed.
