Then the next time it happened I'd do exactly the same again....
We're all good at saying what we "think" we'd do, but this is the closest I've seen to the genuine truth so far if it were to actually happen. For me at least, and others I know.0 -
Generally, I think my opinion follows the majority here, this being that if she'd genuinely picked it up already and wanted it, it would be in her basket, not on the shelf, so I would keep it.
I've never witnessed it myself, but have heard of scenario's whereby the older generations will try to use their advanced years to work things in their favour, as might be the case here.
Frankly though, if the older lady was the polite and upstanding member of society most people are assuming her to be, and was indeed telling the truth, then I think she would have kept her mouth shut and accept that she'd made a mistake by putting it back on the shelf (it's what I'd do anyway if I'd made such an error, and just silently kick myself for missing out on a good bargain).£12k in 2019 #084 £3000/£3000

Or even better, nobody buy the steak and everyone turn veggie!
Now there's a familiar username I remember from somewhere
Certainly one of the nicer replies. But I think as you get older (not that I'm *that* old.. 27..) cynicism starts to kick in. I think in reality I'd hand it over, but I'd be cursing myself for being manipulated, as brokeinwales was implying.genuine mis-steak
Maybe Gwyn should say "sure, I'll put it back, but I bet 10p it makes you ill" and put it on the top shelf. The old dear wouldn't bother taking it as the steak would be too high.As a little old lady myself I still say if she'd wanted it she should have put it in her basket in the first place. It reminds me of when I used to rush round the shops in my lunch hour from work and the old dears would try and jump the queue at the till. If you can tell me which supermarket it was in though I'll rush round this evening!!
No idea but our Booths is like that. I don't know why all the old folk always insist on shopping during lunch hour when working people are in a hurry. Why not 2-3pm or something? But they always act like they're the ones in the bigger rush as if they MUST be back home in time for the next cup of tea!
Shouldn't generalise really. There are plenty of ignorant people around, regardless of age. Still, I have witnessed old folk being quite proud of how cunning they are, especially around bargains - remember they've been around for a while, they know every trick in the book and are not stupid.0 -
I cannot believe some of the comments I have seen on this thread. Some of you are positively feral.
Have we fallen so far that we would - almost unanimously - elbow aside a pensioner who is asking you for cheap food?
I would NOT snatch food away from an old person who had humbled themselves to ask me for it. I'm not starving, I'm not a savage - and no matter how hard done by I may think I am, I haven't yet fallen far enough that I would fight with an old lady over a reduced steak.
Where is dignity in all this? I would hand it over, no question. Most of those replying aren't pensioners, they haven't had to live on a fixed income for years and years, they haven't experienced age abuse (some of the comments on here!!! Some of the terms used! Hang your heads in shame!)
I feel disgraced for all of us. Is this what society has come to?0 -
Nothing like this has ever happened to me and probably never will, but if it did, I would gladly give the steak to the old woman because she obviously needs it more than me.0

I know most of the hardcore old lady discount grabbers in my store. If it was one of them I'd make it quite clear that I've seen them before and some of their disgraceful grabby behaviour, but I don't think I'd have a problem as they know me too! So lets assume it's someone with no 'history'. If she was polite and nice about asking, then yes. If rude and grabby then I'd discuss being rude and grabby with her. Politely.
I have to say that I'm quite a creative cook so steak doesn't mean that much to me - I can do something great with a tin of chickpeas and some vegetables - she may not be as clued up - despite comments about how older people are better at cooking, it's not always the way.
To be honest, I'd treat it like a seat on the tube, if it was someone who looked like they needed it more, looking impovershed, or older and polite, then I would happily give it up for them. I can make a meal for 50p which I would enjoy - let them have the opportunity to do so. And I can be pretty sure they'd be spending more than me on a meal!
I could make it better myself at home. All I need is a small aubergine...
I moved to Liverpool for a better life.
And goodness, it's turned out to be better and busier!0 -
I wouldn't hesitate to give the steak to her as soon as I looked at her and saw she was in her late 70's - I couldn't live with myself if I didn't.
I can't believe so many people wouldn't, where are your manners? This is what is so wrong in the UK today and we need to go back to the times when we cared about one another and looked out for another, especially the elderly.
Please everyone, have a bit more kindness, it's free!0 -
Elderly lady should have put the steak in her basket/trolley. Nobody would take it off her then. Otherwise, I'd say it was there for the taking by anybody.0
