I agree with you that there are many feral, greedy, selfish & ignorant people out there. Unfortunately they come in all shapes & sizes & AGES!
There are many out there who are in dire circumstances and apperances can be deceiving. I have seen poorly dressed pensioners fighting for bargains and then put them into their trolleys alongside expensive booze & food items, then climbing into their brand new merc's or bmw's.
I have lived on a very small fixed income for years & years. I do NOT live off the state & I have four kids to feed & clothe. So I'm afraid that in my situation I would politely, but firmly say that I was sorry but I was keeping the steak. I have walked the 3 miles to the nearest Tesco with my last four pounds in the pouring rain, in order to find bargains. I am not saying this for sympathy (won't get it here anyway ;)), but to point out that poverty doesn't favour the old!

each person has their own values and opinions and while i respect the elder generation i do not in any way now feel sorry for many of them after what i have seen over the last few years.

i work in a college and deal with students of all ages and i find that over and over again it is the older generations that have little or no respect for other people and many are worse off than them and think that they should have priority over others just because they are older, but sadly less mature in any cases.

i am a mother and have 3 children and yet the pensioners in my area are given more money to live on that i am given to look after my family and that is with the help that is available to me. they have the same amount of heating that i need for my family but less food as a couple compared to a family of 5 in my case.

they have themselves to look after while i have a young family to feed and clothe and as children grow fast they need more things eg clothes and shoes which is something that the older generation including myself do not need so frequently, i do not have holidays and often go without to ensure my children have what they need, and even with my wage i struggle some months more than others

if someone is polite and respecive to me then i may consider letting the older person have the steak but if they had little or no respect and a serious attitude then sorry but if it was in my hand/basket and i wanted it then it would stay there

give me more to live on and then the pensioner could have the steak, until then my children come first. it wasnt in her basket so she doesnt own it so tough, she shouldnt try it on!!

    MY VIEW

A lot of us pick up items at markets car boots and food stores, and procrastinate, is it a a good buy ,or is it not. If one intends to purchase it goes in the basket or keep it in ones hand, if it is put back down the decision to purchase was not made.

On the above basis TECHNICALLY she hade not DECIDED to purchase that item, I have seen this happen before, LET HER have it, or get slapped in the face WITH A WET STEAK
    Boring :D
