I would keep it i'm afraid. Times are tough for everyone and a £6 steak now 50p is too good to give up. The lady may be old but she has arms so could have held onto such a bargain or, and here's a novel idea, she could have put it into one of those baskets or trolleys that supermarkets provide so that people can show 'ownership' of an item . Sorry to sound rough but i've been on the wrong end of too many old ladies who think they own supermarkets and can barge in front, hit you in leg with trolleys and generally complain about 'the younger generation' so maybe i'm a little bruised and hardened lol. I dont mean to tarnish all with this brush as some oaps are wonderful but unless she had a good reason for not holding onto it then it was not hers - sorry.

tricky one. Age doesnt necessarily mean hard up.
My Mum and Dad are pensioners and she and my Dad have more a week for their food than my family of me, 3 children and husband do. My Mum would probably say it belonged to her as well and play the age card when actually someone like myself could use the bargain more.

However I am a great believer in karma so I would probably let her have it and walk away even if I was inwardly fuming and just be the bigger person.

ETA I am a vegeterian so I woulnt want the steak anyway LOL

Tough - she shouldnt have put it down if she wanted it, thats what shopping baskets are for.

In reality it would have to be green for a supermarket to offer a steak for 50p they are so tight they would rather throw it out:eek:

Slightly OT, but it's actually quite a sad reflection on how the elderly are handled in at least this country, the fact that they seem to be automatically associated with poverty.

I would keep it, don't put a good bargain down!
Taking responsibility one penny at a time!
  • I am lucky that I do not have to resort to bargain bins . . .

I'm always thinking of doing the right and moral thing; only the other week I was in a supermarket checkout queue with my weekly shop.

The old dear behind me only had a pint of milk and a tin of cat food.

I said to her "Is that all you've got?"

    She said "Yes".

Trying to be helpful, I said " You better go around the store again, I'm gonna be ages here".

    Seriously . . .

A similar situation DID occur recently; Of course, I let the old guy go in front of me in the queue. The smartish looking woman with the overflowing trolley now in front of him did not . . .

If she wanted it that bad she should have put it in her basket
  • ;) You don't grow old if you don't grow crafty! :rotfl:Not telling my age ;) getting craftier! :rotfl:The lady won't get any older unless she gets more careful and craftier.

If she put the meat in her basket she would have had it, can't risk leaving it for others to grab. I wouldn't give it up - she was trying it on.
  • Depends how she was saying it

a- "Excuse me dearie, every so sorry but do you think I could have that? I was going to have it for my husband's dinner but I got distracted by the reduced milk and my mind's going a bit etc..." = me saying no problem and feeling warm and fuzzy for helping a sweet old dear.

b- "Oi you, get your hands off, that's my steak I saw it first. I'm old you know, you people have no consideration for the elderly....." = me walking away with steak and no remorse whatsoever. You don't get anywhere by being rude with me!!
