MONEY MORAL DILEMMA. Should Gwyneth give the lady her reduced steak?

According to the Theft Act something ‘belongs’ to someone if they have possession or control of it. They do not have to ‘buy’ it to have legal rights.
So removing an item from someone’s supermarket trolley could be theft as they have possession or control of it even though they haven’t reached the checkout yet.
In the case of an old lady putting the steak aside, albeit not in her trolley, while she continued to look through the other reduced items the steak could be construed as remaining under her control if she objected immediately to someone else picking up the steak.0 -
If the old lady wanted it, she should have put it in her shopping trolley. Gwyneth is perfectly entitled to take it, as it was still on the shelf. If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0

My Son used to work in fresh meat dept. in local Sainsburys and hated it when he had to reduce stuff as the lol's used to practically wrestle him to the ground as he was trying to do reductions. He is 6 foot and they used to terrify him. So no I wouldn't give her it although can't believe it would still be on the shelf anyway.0

If this was a real life situation (which it isn't, I don't eat steak anyway!), I'd probably end up letting the old lady have the steak and apologise for my mistake, then a few minutes later, realising that was completely ridiculous and spend the rest of the shopping trip b***hing about older people thinking they've a god-given right to be treated better than everyone else.
Then the next time it happened I'd do exactly the same again....0 -
!!!!!!.. of course its not hers.. dont get me wrong, i wouldnt rob it out her basket or trolley, but if its on the shelf its on the shelf.
Whether she's old, nice or mean isnt relevant.0 -
If she picked it up then put it down that says to me that she didn't want it & you are entitled to it not her. How does she know you are not down to your last £5 & that will feed the family that evening0

I'm afraid that the steak would stay firmly in my shopping trolley:D. Age is not the only reason for having a tight budget and there are many young people who are in far worse financial situations than any pensioner should be.
And I'm 51 - so not being ageist:D"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -
What a miserable bunch! Of course, 'Gwyneth' should let the old lady have the steak, if not out of respect for her elder, then because it would be the nice thing to do.
Or even better, nobody buy the steak and everyone turn veggie!0 -
She's trying it on... cheeky old bag!Debt Free
.......... Mortgage Free

Politely, no.
If the lady wanted it she should of put it in her basket or trolley. It doesnt belong to her until she pays for it.
I would perhaps apply the 5 second rule rather than grab it a second after she puts it back on the shelf, assuming no one else tries to grab it before me
But if she waves the old age card around then I will wave my skint card.0
