Hope its not a spanner in the works but could big brother be surveillance. Was looking on these lines and found this. - The Marconi Radar Type S.723 is an D-Band, long range, transportable 3D surveillance radar system designed for world-wide use in military applications. Also seen it referred to as Marconi 'Martello' S.723 but cant get anywhere after that.

Dont know if this info is any of use

I've ruled out the Erskine brothers simply because Ralph is the younger brother (born 5 years later) of Ebenezer, so can't be his 'big brother'.

I still like the Pelham brothers route, I think they 'stood' in a political sense, so somewhere there is a virtual tour that links to 723....perhaps the House of Lords?

I did notice that about the 'big brother' thing, and Ralph being younger last night after I posted but couldn't be bothered looking any more into it... fed up with it now :p

I think we have to start from the beginning and try to forget ideas on clues already posted.

Do we all agree about 'Wishart' being George Wishart?

Watching University Challenge tonight there was a question featuring strange numbers, and the answer was the Dewey Decimal system for non-fiction books in a library. Looking HERE and 723 is the classification for architecture from 300AD to 1400AD. If this is plausible then it might get us past the 723 which seems to be blocking all our efforts, as long as the place we are looking for is at least 600 years old! Might be worth re-visiting some of the previous dead ends.

I think the reason we are having so much trouble with this one is because there are so many possibilites at each step!

I'm convinced the 723 links to a visual clue, there is always one in these quizzes, usually a virtual tour somewhere. However, I'm really stuck now. I like the Pelham brothers route simply because they are the most prominent leaders, having both been Prime Ministers. Finding where Henry stands is what I'm currently stuck on, because it suggests where he is now....and there are no statues I can find, both he and his older brother are buried in the Pelham vault, not upright as far as I can tell so I'm at a dead end. I was concentrating on where he stood, looking at virtual tours of 10 Downing Street, Houses of Commons and Lords.........aarrrgh! I've also wondered if following the line is about following his family tree, or a Pelham related house, but I dunno, I'm getting a bit fed up now!

For what it's worth I also think the last lines are a visual clue. I have a feeling through Google Streetview (which has been used before). I think a statue probably makes the most sense for the clue 'where he stands' in the present tense. I think if you find this statue on streetview you might be able to follow the grey line streetview uses to something which fits the Big Brother clue, and there's either a clock at 7 minutes to 3 or another time that fits the numbers next to it. Or possibly a building number 723, but 'hand' fits with a clock. I wonder if literally there is someone washing the windows overlooking the place we're looking for.

Anyway if you even understood my ramblings there, none of it is much help until we know for sure who we're looking for lol

I wonder about the 723. When I looked at completed game solution I noticed this

    http://www.cashhunt.co.uk/august15comp.htm

    A computer board here, a highlight 53,
Castle Combe has a motor racing circuit known as Castle Combe Circuit. The official web site features a history page which states that Ken Wharton won there in 1953.

They have a clue of 53, but the answer to that part was 1953. Could our one be 1723? Aaah! more confusion :o

All I can say is...I think this website have kept this comp going for longer to have a good laugh at us running round in circles :o

If anyone is looking in from cashhunt.co.uk...give us a sign if we're on the right tracks please :p
  • I have a new theory (which stems from a point people reached earlier on) just to confuse things and see what you think.

Starting with Wishart being George Wishart the preacher.
Which leads to various accounts of golf starting in Scotland. Found various years mentioned in wikipedia Old_Course_at_St_Andrews, namely 1552,1574, 1506.
I think someone got to this point earlier in the thread.
Then I was looking for who died in these years, and wondered if "discover" the leader might hint at it being Christopher Columbus who died in 1506.

There is a statue of him in Belgrave Square. He's in the south corner looking and with his arm to the West. And in the west corner is a statue of Henry the Navigator who I read was CC's sponsor (so maybe "big brother"?).

There are a lot of roads named something Place, and the clue says place a lot. Might be a coincidence. I can't find anything to do with 723/1923 or old windows, so I'm stuck!

It may all be a red herring anyway.

I had a thought that it might be Edinburgh and not Dundee as Wishart also preached there and there was a large Irish population in Cowgate there. If you follow the road it takes you to Hibernaian footie ground founded in 1875 by a priest and the Irish settlers. This is near Waverley railway station if you then follow the line you get to Waterloo Place and Nelsons Monument and Carlton Old Burial Ground but I'm a bit stuck from there on in.
If at first you don't succeed try, try, try again.
