ladybird - I always have something DH doesn't like when he's not in for dinner. usually nibbly things like bread, cheese, olives and hummous as he doesn't think that constitutes a meal!

Don't slink off Mel. I'm glad the money situation looks brighter. Not so fun with your DH's fussiness!

Have you tried the trick of buying the unbranded cereal and putting it in the branded box?
That was gonna be my suggestion!
There was a thread about it a while ago and someone said they'd been refilling the same heinz ketchup bottle for about 3 years :rotfl:

They're 'cheap wine' from a discount store - £3.99 probably tastes like wee... Hardy's crest usual price £8.99 is currently on offer at £3.99 in morribobs - my mum has bought 24 bottles because its her fave :D

    Weezl - Nice cheapy dinner:)
There is no way we could ever get down to the kind of figures that you acheive. Firstly the obvious, there is more of us. Secondly, dh is a fussy sod....he would not entertain a baked potato for his main dinner, he won't eat value meat (or any food for that matter) and every meal must have meat but if we have sausages/mince more often than once/twice in a fortnight he moans. He doesn't like beans too much. Even cereal he is fussy with, they must be Kelloggs!! I am fighting a losing battle really, so haven't almost given up trying. I make small savings where possible but they are small.

I totally respect your OHs right to spend his money however he likes. We all work hard and I never mean my frugal ways to sound evangelical, or that I think others, 'should' do it IYSWIM? For me I think it's just that a meal however lovely, is over in 15 mins and then is on it's way to becoming poo, so I don't rank it as a high spending priority:rotfl:

But I totally know I'm in a minority there! Once we feel we've achieved our MSE goals I expect we will allow ourselves more treats though :)

The amount of rules your DH has about the food budget would irk me a bit if I was shopping and cooking for him though, I hope that doesn't sound too cheeky Mel x

Yeah I have actually tried that:)
I can't do it with any soaps/shower gels or laundry items as he has really sensitive skin and everything brings him out in rashes, so tend to stick to ones we know don't now. I personally won't eat value meat, but other food doesn't bother me. I filled the Kelloggs bran flakes box with Asda's own and I also tried Tesco's own, he chucked the whole box in the bin when it was the Asda one, kept complaing they tasted like cardboard...he didn't throw the Tesco ones away but kept complaining they tasted weird and barely ended up eating half the box. I have also tried this with cornflakes and he noticed straight away too.

I can't do it with Ketchup as the cheap ones tend to make the kids faces go red!! I have also bought cheap bread flour, but again he noticed and kept blaming me for making it wrong. He must have a very sensitive palate, it is very annoying.

yep, per potato, I counted them and divided that by the bag total cost :):o

it's these beans. They're cheaper than the ones without sausages weirdly:confused:

    I promise I don't work for asda :o

My pasta puttanesca works out as 23p per serving and is a wee bit healthier if you'd like a linkie....

How much are the Costco baker bags? I get a 25kg bag of Maris Piper for £5 if I can get to the market or £8 for King Edwards from the farm shop if I can't. I usually just rake the bag for big ones! OH won't entertain a Jacket without cheese. Theres not really a MSE way to get cheese lol

Linkie for pasta would be good ta x

I know a household that does the "cheap cereal in branded boxes" trick too :money:

I'm glad your money situation is sorting itself out - also worth noting that while you're at home during the day and OH is out, you could buy large packets of fresh value mince, portion them out and freeze in bags as opposed to in the packet. Dispose of the evidence and he'll never know :money:

I'm going for plain rice with a hard boiled egg, peas, sweetcorn, a handful of dried fruit and pinenuts, with some cumin and lemon juice over the top. Not fancy, but does well as comfort food. And the olves from my graze box too :)

(I also have some codes, if anyone wants one.)

It has to be Daddie's ketchup here - I've not tried the value stuff - what is it like?
