Hi everyone! I am very very excited today coz OUR FREEZER IS FIXED!!! :j:j:j There hasn't been a working freezer in this house since I moved in 7 months ago (wouln't have moved in if I'd known!) and its been killing my food budget, but by tea-time it'll be up to speed and ready to go!
In other news, I had to nip out for custard on Tuesday for my apple and pear crumble - 92p. Wed and today have been NSDs so far. My week of food has been pretty boring coz I eat the same thing for days with no freezer. Spanish omlette Mon and Tues, made an amazing roast butternut squash risotto last night that will last me tonight and tomorrow lunch, and apple and pear crumble for afters!
I was just wondering, can you freeze risotto? I know rice is a funny one so thought I'd check, this batch is too good to resist eating now, but I usually end up sick of it there's so much.
I also decided to be a geek the other day and check the tesco website (where i usually shop) and compare prices to what I bought in Lidl on Monday - £4 saving - which on a £14 shop is pretty good! :TNST September: SFD 17/20, food £62.87/£60, travel £61.55/£40, Outings £39.80/£100, Allotment £7.17/£30 Other: £42.32, Meditation ?/30.

It should be a cheap week hopefully as the menu plan has a couple of meatless, filling cheapies from my childhood on it
like Onion, Potato & Bacon hotpot, falafel in pittas and HM corned beef pasties. I must have been getting all nostalgic when I did it last week!
.
You brought back memories for me just then; haven't had Onion, bacon & potato hotpot in eons; it used to be a Sat lunch staple when I was growing up alternating with a big fryup; Mum used to buy the packs of bacon pieces, and the catering size bags of dried onions to use in this (kept for ages). My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
So we’re empty nesters.
Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
My mother always served up leftovers we never knew what the original meal was. - Tracey Ulman0 -
Free entertainment this morning with a long walk round the park with DD, spotting squirrels and birds everywhere. Bought some baby food in Boots £1.15 and spent £5.37 in Tesco on coffee, rolls, butter and penguin biscuits.
The rolls and biscuits are for tonight as I am making sandwiches for our journey to the relatives.
Normally we would stop at a services and fork out on their sandwiches but not this time! I even remembered to get bottles of water as I really hate paying through the nose for the stuff at the s/station. I know, I know it would be WAY cheaper to bring a reusable bottle with tap water but hey, baby steps.
Anyway, I had been thinking I would "treat myself" to a coffee at M&S but then I thought, it's nearly lunchtime, I'll just go home. I used up some baked beans and fried some mushrooms which were going slimy and had it on the last piece of bread in the bag.
So now we have a pretty empty fridge ahead of three days away - this meal planning stuff really works doesn't it?!0 -
