Kitchenbunny wrote: »Morning, everyone. Here are my five pleasures for yesterday.
1. A traybake I made (a total experiment that I've never made before) turned out to be fabulous. It was a pastry layer topped with mincemeat, then spiced apple slices on top of that and finally layered with crumble mix. Mmm...
Ohhh - that sounds unbelievably good
Here are mine from yesterday:
1) Snow had pretty much gone.
2) Were able to get into Norwich for the opening of the new H*bbycraft store (which was surprisingly disappointing after weeks of getting excited about it).
3) Bought myself a top from the Barbara Hulanicki range at Asda.
4) After worrying about my mum all day (she has a foot operation next year which will leave her mobility very limited for several months) I had a nice phone call with her in the evening and we cheered each other up a bit.
5) Started crocheting a hood/cowl that I'd had my eye on with some new wool I got from H*bbycraft.DFW Nerd 941 Proud to be dealing with my debt

Hi all
Primrose, thank you for the suggestions about more books from Elizabeth West, I shall certainly have a look for them. Dear me, I keep promising that I shall stop spending money on books online, but every time I get a lovely new recommendation, I fail miserably - well, it is not like I go spending money on booze and fripperies, do I? Books are educational so they must be a virtuous spending, no?
Tealady, what did you think of the Taste of Christmas? Did you see the fake Scots at the Black Grouse stand? I went there (attracted by these three strapping lads in kilts) and then we started chatting and they were speaking with a South London accent (!!!). I said 'what, are you not real Scots then?' and they said, 'no we are only selling a product'! So I had a taste of the product of course (nice!) but because I am a polite person, before drinking up I said Slainte - and was met with very blank looks - it was hysterically funny, they did not have the faintest clue! LOLOLOLOLOL but they were quite decorative and the whisky quite nice (and free!). So I did not complain, after all hehe. I normally do not drink alcohol but the occasional drop of whisky is really welcome!
Here are my pleasures for today:
1 - First thing in the morning, my friend called me to remind me that the local Steiner School are doing a fair (which is always great) and asked me to meet her there, early-ish to avoid crowds.
2 - Went to the fair with DH and met up with my friend, and the fair was really really nice and I met up with a lot of people I know (and some that I did not know but I do now!).
3 - They had therapists doing treatments for donations there. Had a shoulder massage and a reflexology, both for the small donation of £5 each, but very very good, professional treatments, lasting a good 20 minutes each. Bliss!
4 - Lunch at the fair, a ginormous plateful of 3 different veggie curries with rice, amazing! DH and my friend had Aubergine parmigiana (which I could not have because it got dairy in it). I tasted a morsel of the parmigiana and it was delicious, really authentic Italian flavour!
5 - At the fair they had a mince pie stall and they had a tray with vegan mince pies. I bought the whole tray's worth for very little money and now I have a little stash of vegan mince pies for my use! YUMMY.
6 - I also bought an inordinate amount of small balls of yarn, real wool, carpet wool so too rough to wear, but will make me a good few crocheted cushion covers (or a whole blanket).
7 - My friend came back home and we had tea and mince pie, of course, and had a nice chat.
8 - After my friend went, DD came back home and we sat in the living room listening to Magic Radio, me crocheting (DS's blanket) and she finishing her Uni project. Very lovely companionable time.
9 - DD had been at another fair where her friend had a craft stall and she came back with a gorgeous fabric brooch in the shape of a heart that she made for me. It is so beautiful and I am so delighted!
10 - DD agreed to cook a tomato sauce and we will be tasting the artisan egg tagliatelle from Approved Food.
Have a great evening everybody xxxFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
Evening all.
I'm afraid this is another of my flying Sunday night visits - Sunday evenings are always a rush.
1) Long lie-in this morning, although I've paid for it by feeling fuzzy-headed all day.
2) Got my new, half price Christmas tree. (A brief confession: I got to the store to find that the shelf for the half price trees was empty. I spoke to a member of staff who advised me to reserve a tree online, and they'd keep one for me when the next delivery arrived. I turned round to leave the store, and found a five foot high pile of half price trees right behind me. I felt a bit of an eejit at that point!)
3) Managed to survive without switching the heating on until it got dark.
4) Curled up on the sofa with the cat this afternoon to watch a bit of snooker.
5) Pub quiz tonight - or it will be if I can find the pub. To complete a weekend of really weird weather, there's now dense fog in Portsmouth. If I don't post tomorrow, you'll know I got lost en route!
Have a nice evening, peeps.Back after a very long break!0 -
My 5 for today.
1. Not being at work and pottering around at home is my all time top favourite old style pleasure.

4. Not being cold enough to need the heating on.

Hello, let me introduce myself. I'm Tofu Tanya and this is my first day on this forum.
Hope you are all having a nice Sunday. Back to work tomorrow after 3 days off!
Today's pleasures:
1) Getting a 5 foot Christmas tree for £5 in Asda, (just bought my own house and was expecting to have to pay a lot more:T)
2) Making delish soup in the slow cooker from all the old wilty bits in the bottom of the fridge.
3) Making it to Asda in one piece and buying some fresh fruit.
4) Hot choc by the fire on a Sunday afternoon.
5) Finally joining this forum after being a lurker for months:beer:. Looking forward to chatting with you all!!

Evening all,
and a special welcome to Tofu Tanya:hello:
1) Played badminton this morning. It was really good fun and am alrady looking forward to next week!
2) Snooze this afternoon on the sofa with the Kitty.
3) Chat to the Mother this evening
4) Wrote, address and stamped my Christmas cards. I normally run out of time to do this and then feel so guilty when people send me one.
5) Tidying the kitchen. My counter has been covered in empty jam jars for a few weeks and I still haven't got round to making any more jam so I have tidied them away until I find some inspiration.
Sparrer - hope you are feeling better.
Night all.
LMan plans and God laughs...Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.0 -
Tanya - Welcome! Its lovely on here and everyone is so nice!
Caterina - I am also a book addict! Maybe we should swap them once read, that may be more moneysaving!
aless02 - How do you make your own peanut butter? I have loads of peanuts here that have just gone out of date so I need to use them up!
I havent written mine in so long! Days just run away from me!
Last week was ok at work, the management were stranded because of the snow so we all had quite a lovely time! Lots of coffee breaks and we all bought in yummy things to eat!
Its still really icey up here so I am terrified I will slip and hurt my ankle again!
1. Got my Christmas tree. Its a real one and was only £7.99!! Hubby was being a scrooge about xmas but as soon as he saw the tree, he got excited and helped me get it set up and decorated!
2. baked oaty cinamon and apricot cookies and a batch of scotch pancakes! Yum!
3. A HUGE hot chocolate today with cream and marshmallows!
4. Wrote my Christmas cards last night, finally!!
5. My 25th Annoversery Les Miserables DVD arrived. It was AWESOME! DH even watched it with me! Thought Nick Jonas who played Marius was a bit disappointing but the rest of the cast were fantastic!
6. Sorted out all my food cupboards ready for Xmas so I know exactly what I have in.
7. Finished reading "Animal Farm". Have meant to read it for ages.
I shall endevour to post again tomorrow!! Sat safe in the snow!0 -
1) The Grandmas' party went well for DD. Despite the fussing, everyone turned up, ate well and got on. The best bits (for me) were Mum turning up with a bunch of flowers for me too and our family friends staying on after everyone else for a Bailey's and a chat.
2) Sunday School was ace. We were doing praising shepherds. As an extra activity, we drew three hills on a long roll of paper and had children on both sides adding their own angels/stars/sheep/houses in Bethlehem. It was so good that I stuck it up in church afterwards.
3) DH mended a chair that has had wobbly joints for a few weeks and sorted out a couple of curtain rails upstairs.
4) Coffee date with DH timed so that when DS finished for the day at the other cafe we could give him a lift home.
5) Started on the first sleeve of my second free jumper.
6) All meals composed of leftovers and sandwiches tomorrow from the same.
7) (Yes, I know it's a lot but...) I have found a knitting lady in church. She was selling a pullover in aid of the Boiler Fund and apparently, has been knitting since she was eight. She is prepared to knit up my other batch of free wool, to my pattern, for a donation to the Fund. It's not as MSE as doing it myself but it will be done better and more quickly (ie sometime this winter) and the Boiler Fund will benefit. Also, I get to chat to one of the ladies that I don't know very well.0 -
Hi there - I don't normally post here but I've got the winter blues and I thought it would help me be positive. Doing Christmas this year is going to be so hard as my mother recently died, so I decided to do the WHOLE preparations in one day. :
1) We treated ourselves to a nice Starbucks coffee and sat there until the cards were all done. I had enough from last year except one and I quickly made another one when I got home so I wouldn't need to go out buying.
2) The kids are all grown up and appreciate money more than anything so got the cheques written and put into the cards.
3) Put up the very simple Christmas tree with some silver baubles, and put out the few decorations.
4) Jacket potatoes and cheese for tea - easy and comforting.
5) Decluttered my wardrobe so that the only things in there fit me and look good.
It was still a difficult day - bereavement is so awful at times when other people are feeling happy :-( but getting it over with in one day will definitely help.
On Christmas Day itself we'll be on holiday in Scotland and we're keeping our fingers crossed that Edinburgh Zoo will be open (it only closes in dangerously bad weather) as I had a special day planned with my Mum and I can't bear to do a 'normal' Christmas without her. Seeing penguins will be a great comfort - and Edinburgh Zoo has the best penguins ever!0
