  • 1) Yesterday, I managed to find 3 shirts for DH in the charity shop for £15. He likes them all. For myself, I got a long denim skirt (L Ashley) for £8 and a River I cardi that will do nicely for tomorrow ...
    2) DD's second birthday party tomorrow. We always have one for the family & Grandmas and one for her friends. We are expecting the Grandmas tomorrow if the weather does not get any worse. Have been slightly miffed by some family members who are too busy to come, or who are coming to us first and then going to something else etc but it will make those who always do come all the more welcome.
    3) Baking with real flour. Since I'm gluten free, it's been a long time since I made 'real' cakes and I enjoyed it.
    4) Despite the snow, the bin men came today while I was defrosting my car and I was able to thank them.
    5) Finally made myself start reading the last book in the quartet I enjoyed this summer - The Dragonbone Chair series by Tad Williams.

    1. NSD

    2. A friend made it out to the supermarket and brought me a loaf of bread, but wouldn't take any money for it :)

    3. DD singing along to the Archers theme tune, I hadn't realised we have R4 on so much in the evenings!. My dad will be most dismayed, his old boss used to witter on about the programme and he can't stand it, tee hee :)

    4. Finally started to tidy up a bit in my messy house - but now we seem to have misplaced the TV remote, that'll learn us ;)

    5. Sitting here in the middle of the night listening to the rain so hopefully the snow will go, go, GO!!! If it's clear enough out I shall try and pop into the office to do some desperately needed paperwork today so that if its nasty again by Monday I won't sit here panicking.

    Mt five are

    1. A NSD

    2. Lovely walk with the dog and took a few photos with my phone but not quite sure how to take them off phone. The sun was out for the walk and it looked lovely.

    3. DH managed to get to work and home safely. It took a long time though.

    4. Beef stew and dumplings for tea. Great food for this weather.

    5. Phone call from DS1 - he has far less snow than here and going to lectures.

    6. Walked to post office and collected our mail. DH was waiting for important letter.
  • Good morning all. I actually managed 7 1/2 hours sleep last night!! It's the longest I have slept in over 3 months and it feels good. Just had my syruppy porridge and am preparing to go into town (walking, thank goodness) to do some christmas shopping - I must be mad.
Blimus, this weather is great as long as you dont have to go out. Lucky DH.
Marmite, the cat will keep you nice and warm.
    Ladyhawk, the stew sounds lovely.
Patchwork Quilt, enjoy your daughters birthday party. It's really frustrating when certain family members don't make the effort. When my DD1 was christened all my husbands family came over, when it was DD2's turn none of them did! (you can tell I haven't forgotten or forgiven!)
Kittikins, well done on the NSD.
Villagelife, it's lovely walking the dog in this weather isn't it - and they stay clean!

    My five for yesterday,
    1. My new (to me) car is doing great, even in this weather. It even got me places I didn't think it would.
    2. Two loads of ironing from the lady I iron for. She is away next week so I dont have to go - a day off!
    3. More supportive text messages/phone calls from good friends.
    4. Walking DD2 to youth club in the snow with my sister and dogs. Lovely and quiet along the cycle path.
    5. An unexpected text message from an old friend I have just got back in touch with. Said he hoped I was tucked up nice and warm and ended with a X !!!
Be careful out there peeps. X
  • Morning all, hope everyone is keeping safe and warm :)

    My 5 for yesterday:

    1. DH got up with the kids again and got them to school and nursery so i had an extra couple of hours sleep.

    2. Watched Housewife 49 that i'd sky +'d earlier in the week, all curled up with my blanket, hot tea and biscuits. I usually use the time when DS is at nursery (he goes 2 mornings a week) to catch up with the house but yesterday i thought s*d it lol :D

    3. Got all the Xmas cards done and got a lovely feeling inside when i realised next year we'll have another name to add on :)

    4. Did some online shopping for presents, Debenhams had 20% off plus free delivery and ordered photos from Photobox to be framed for grandparent presents. Just hoping it all gets delivered!

    5. A night in front of the telly snuggled up with DH and a lovely indian takeaway for tea.

    Take care all

    5 for yesterday (Friday).

    1) School was open, albeit from 10am.

    2) Had a good tidy - changed the beds, 3 loads of washing, cleaned bathroom etc.

    3) MrN made us lunch.

    4) Boys both happy and rather enjoyed their days at school - only 13 in smaller son's class and 6 in bigger son's where there should have been 30 in each!

    5) Good chat with my sister on the phone. She's making headway with the small things that need doing in her new house.

    6) MrN came round later. :-)

    Afternoon everyone!
Lovely to see the rain falling and also seeing the ice melting and snow being washed away today :j I get really nervous if I have to drive on icy roads.
Seems to have been a busy couple of days since I officially finished work - I wake up each day with a broad smile, and friends have commented on how I look as if a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Do need to find a bit of part time work at some point but there's no rush thankfully.
    So, recent pleasures:-
    1) Don't have to get up and defrost the car any more :D
    2) NSD today
    3) Got notified I will be receiving £250 cold weather payment :j
    4) Lovely lunch out with 2 colleagues who are good friends, yesterday. Nice cards and a prezzy from them
    5) Put up my Christmas tree today - although I think puddy tat has got her eyes on it, and it may not last long!

Hope those who are poorly and/or feeling down in the dumps feel better soon. Keep safe and warm everyone,

    Pam x

    Hi all

Thank you for all your kind words. A bit of a better day today, things have "normalised" e.g. gone back to as if nothing had happened, as usual. Not the best outcome (the ideal would be if he changed his behaviour permanently but wishing for this is pie in the sky), but at least the argument is not going on.

I still manage to get pleasure out of my day though, fortunately, and thanks to this thread and its kindly posters!

1 - Even through the continuing argument, DH still made me tea and fried egg for breakfast.

2 - While he was out doing his *stupid* martial arts:( I managed to calm down a bit more and read more of my book, which is always a way to soothe me, reading about lovely places and situations (I was reading "Garden in the Hills", the follow-up from "Hovel in the Hills", from recommendations of OSers who had read it and found it lovely. It is!).

3 - On his return we managed to have a semi-civilised conversation about having lunch and what we needed to do at the allotment.

4 - Lunch was leftovers of a dish that DD and her BF had cooked yesterday, not the most gourmet of foods, a bit of a slop, but still edible, still food, cooked with love by these two lovely young people. And we are grateful that we have food!

5 - Allotment visit - we cleared the snow from the collapsed top of the kale protection net (the little kale plants are doing ok under the blanket of snow) then we built a makeshift cage for the sprouting broccoli with old canes, a bit of spare netting and some horticultural fleece. It felt good to be in the bracing cold, outdoor, doing something manual and practical, after all the hair-tearing and teeth-gnashing of the 24-hour argument. It really normalised things.

6 - This might be stretching the truce but we might go to check out a new restaurant that he might want to use for his 60th birthday celebration. I am not sure I can cope with all this "we are hunky-dory" thing as if nothing had happened, but will give it a good try for the sake of peacekeeping.

Hope you all have a good evening x
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

Caterina - if you've enjoyed these two books of Elizabeth West, try to read her her two books about her subsequent time as a school secretary after they left their Welsh cottage - "Suffer Little Children" and "Insufferable Little Children.". I may have got the titles slightly wrong but they're probably still available from Amazon although out of print now. After this she published "A Patch in the Forest" written about the place they retired to in the Forest of Dean, which is a follow-up. Sadly her husband Alan died while they were living there.

    Today's pleasure:

    1. Temperature has risen. Most of our snow has now melted.
    2. Getting outdoors for a pleasant breath of fresh air after being shut indoors for several days. Was beginning to suffer from cabin fever with stuffy air indoors.
    3. Spotted two rats who've nested in a small gap between our compst heap and the fence and have been watching them running around the lawn picking up bits of bird seed. Not good news but I quite like watching them with their beady eyes and nice silky coats. However, they will have to go! Tomorrow I will put down some bait and say a Requiem for them as I don't like killing any wild creatures.
    4. OH bringing me a lovely pot of hyacinths in bud. Will look forward to them opening.
    5. Pork stir fry for dinner - an opportunity to use up some more veg from the salad tray.

Evening all. Hope you're all doing OK.

    My pleasures for today:

    1) A decent night's sleep. :) The weather's warmed up dramatically so I slept the night through without waking up shivering. Unfortunately it does mean that all the snow's gone, though - 4 inches of the stuff melted in less than 12 hours. :(

    2) Lovely (very) late breakfast of HM bread, soft cheese and smoked salmon.

    3) I've only just remembered that I need a new Christmas tree this year, so I did some research on the internet and found a nice looking one half price at B&Q, which I hope to go and collect tomorrow.

    4) Finally got round to changing my gas and electricity to a cheaper tarriff, which I've been intending to do for months. I'll hopefully get a case of wine out of it, too, thanks to an MSE link - I love cooking with wine, so I'll be a happy bunny if it works.

    5) NSD. That's two in one week. :D (Which is very unusual for me. :o)

    6) HM curry for dinner - perfect for a soggy old evening (it started raining at about 10.30am, and hasn't stopped since :().

    Have a pleasant evening, all.
Back after a very long break!
