  • Hope you're all having a good evening.

    For today:

1 Had a nice walk in the park.

2 Dozed off on the sofa with the wee madam (my cat).

3 Thought about putting the heating on,but didn't.

4 Made a very tasty spinach and mushroom cheesy bake and a marzipan and mincemeat tealoaf (haven't tried it yet,it's just out of the oven).

5 Chatted to my sister on the phone.

Kitchenbunny your traybake sounds very nice.Any chance of sharing the recipe?

Introuble28 ditto with your biscuits!Care to share the recipe?I love George Orwell's books. It's ages since I've 'Animal Farm'.Did you enjoy it?Have you read any others?

Caterina what an interesting day you've had.

Tofu Tanya hi and welcome :hello:

    Night night x
  • Hi there - I don't normally post here but I've got the winter blues and I thought it would help me be positive. Doing Christmas this year is going to be so hard as my mother recently died, so I decided to do the WHOLE preparations in one day. :

    1) We treated ourselves to a nice Starbucks coffee and sat there until the cards were all done. I had enough from last year except one and I quickly made another one when I got home so I wouldn't need to go out buying.

    2) The kids are all grown up and appreciate money more than anything so got the cheques written and put into the cards.

    3) Put up the very simple Christmas tree with some silver baubles, and put out the few decorations.

    4) Jacket potatoes and cheese for tea - easy and comforting.

    5) Decluttered my wardrobe so that the only things in there fit me and look good.

It was still a difficult day - bereavement is so awful at times when other people are feeling happy :-( but getting it over with in one day will definitely help.

On Christmas Day itself we'll be on holiday in Scotland and we're keeping our fingers crossed that Edinburgh Zoo will be open (it only closes in dangerously bad weather) as I had a special day planned with my Mum and I can't bear to do a 'normal' Christmas without her. Seeing penguins will be a great comfort - and Edinburgh Zoo has the best penguins ever!

So sorry about your Mum juliapenguin. I lost my mum in a road accident when I was young in the month of November and I know exactly how you feel. It's hard whatever time of year though Christmas always feels so poignant.
Hi to Tofu Tanya too. I don't post often but this thread is so lovely and a real tonic :)
Caterina I love reading amongst others any of Ruth Rendell and have now got my sister hooked on her books.
I haven't posted for a while as I was having a hard time thinking of any pleasures...how awful is that, so today here are mine.
1 Going to the Christmas market with just myself and OH and seeing all the twinkly lights.
2 Having the sense to put jeans on over my leggings so kept quite warm in the cold.
3 Coming home from the market to all the family in safe and sound.
4 Picking up my crochet and finishing off a scarf and then starting some knitting.
5 Sitting here in the warmth sipping a grand marnier.

    Warm hugz to all

I'M SHOUTING IN CAPITALS - JUST LOST WHOLE POST AGAIN.
It's been happening all afternoon, while I've been trying to list on ebay.
And I had been replying painstakingly to previous posts - there just seem to be so many tonight needing individual replies.
Ah well - it will be all over the place this time.
    ##########
marmite and frith - don't forget to catch up on Garrison Keillor on iplayer and

lucky you, frith - haven't even looked at Grauniad yet and can't think when I last had a complete all in one day read of it. . . .well over year, I'd say.

introuble - you've done well to avoid Animal Farm 'til now. Set text for NZ School Cert[5th form, age 15] in NZ, 1964. Recipe for apricot and cinnamon bake please? - my sort of tastes and sounds good for Charity showroom on Tuesday.

TT- big welcome. Extra points for including 'wilty veg' in 1st post - they're frequent fliers here. But to hit 3 majors in one sentence, viz:

'Making delish soup in the slow cooker from all the old wilty bits in the bottom of the fridge.' - pure mastery, or mistressery, if you prefer. You may like this:

despite last post being April '09. I'm sure worthy additions are being born all over Britain at this time of year, especially not long after another Nigellla series....

Juliapenguin - no-one can fail to understand this first difficult Christmas for you. Little treats i.e starbucks are wise comforts at such times, but

introuble has lush hot choc+melty marshmallows at virtual hand, so let's all have some.

Beachbaby - are we to have a name for your Mr N equivalent one of these days?
Over and again, I think how well you've done andI am enjoying your 'new' car with you. It was the right thing at the right time for you.

    1. Listing...nobly, on and on, despite infuriations. I am so slow and research derails me: I become sidetracked. Nobly? because it was my jour sainte hier.

    2. Big Skype - despite x being in a dark place.

    3. Sorted all Mr T vouchers for redemption before value drops sharply - midnight deadline. Over £1000[seems extraordinary]in anticpiated hotels breaks/ YHA/SYHA/restaurants/Days out/more eurotunnel. Knowing there's an early Christmas post-out of more pre-empts any sudden fears of mistaken choices.

    4.46 watchers on one thing...will it translate>£s?

    5. Whether or not one has interest in cricket, this Test Match is a cracker. All night listening on R5 starts in an hour.

Primrose and Caterina - am adding Elizabeth West to my cerebral library list and Caterina, I, too, say Slainte. Maybe we will at a meet?
    ##############
My most special thing tonight is just reaching out to sparrer - I have not been able to get concern for her out of my mind for several days now.
So - be it that I am thinking very much of you, with soft hugs, and warmth and physical ease. You have February in India to aim for, in heat, light, vibrant colour and joy.

One more thing needs a special post.....

    Hello Tofu, yummy name :)

    Hugs Juliapenguin xxx

Hello everyone, hmm, it's half 2 again and I'm awake :( DD is poorly and so this is the second night of being up and down all night, really hope she's back to her normal self very soon, horrible to see her looking so ill.

    1. DD is being a very brave little sweetie, far more mature than I ever am after now 2 days of d&v, please send healing thoughts

    2. My parents are offering all the help they can from nearly 2 hours drive away and hopefully if DD is still poorly on Tuesday, I will be able to get into the office and do some essential paperwork.

    3. NSD due to spending most of the day on cuddle duty.

    4. Whilst watching over DD have read a couple of good books, one chicklit, one police thriller, and have found some fab vegan recipes.

    5. Managed to resist buying some nice smellies I wanted but really didn't need, and of course I didn't need 2 sets just because they were on special offer and one could go into the present box.......phew!

    6. Glad to see Ann voted off, she was great value and I really admired her for being true to herself (as opposed to the previous "comedy" dancer, the political reporter, I forget his name). But, now its time for the better dancers to really have a competition!
  • ampersand and marmiterulesok - I will look out the recipe tonight and post it a bit later!

I loved animal farm, one of the girls at work gave it to me as it reminded her of our office! lol. I really does......... :-)

    5 for yesterday (Sunday).

    1) All washing and housework done.

    2) MrN came round during the afternoon complete with tool kit and mended things!!

    3) I looked after MrN's children so he could go for a walk (into the frozen wastes) and read a bit more of the Guardian.

    4) My school friend came for tea.

    5) Syphoned some of the sloe gin into bottles. With the suction and getting a massive mouthful of gin accidentally, I could barely walk into the kitchen to make the tea! (I don't actually drink - apart from sloe gin in December).

    6) MrN came round later on. :-)

Tealady, what did you think of the Taste of Christmas? Did you see the fake Scots at the Black Grouse stand? I went there (attracted by these three strapping lads in kilts) and then we started chatting and they were speaking with a South London accent (!!!). I said 'what, are you not real Scots then?' and they said, 'no we are only selling a product'! So I had a taste of the product of course (nice!) but because I am a polite person, before drinking up I said Slainte - and was met with very blank looks - it was hysterically funny, they did not have the faintest clue! LOLOLOLOLOL but they were quite decorative and the whisky quite nice (and free!). So I did not complain, after all hehe. I normally do not drink alcohol but the occasional drop of whisky is really welcome!

Caterina - I missed these I'm sorry to say as I'm sure we would have enjoyed the site. We did have rather a lot of drink samples I've got to say. Quite enjoyed the show but like you would not have wanted to pay for the pleasure of going.

Kittikins - Hugs to you and your DD. Hope she is feeling better

    Pleasures for yesterday:
    1. Lovely day out with a friend at Taste of Christmas show with lots of drink tastings :D
    2. Very restrained in my spending at the show just bought 2 small bottles of vodka for stocking fillers
    3. DD and OH getting on with each other whilst I was out. They wnet to the gold driving range and had a burger in the restaurant there as well. They are so alike they either get on really well or have huge fights
    4. No cooking needed to be done at home so could take it easy when got home
    5. OH managed to contact the plumber and get him to come out to look at our non-working taps tonight. So fingers crossed

Hugs to all who need them. Sparrer hope you are OK.
  • Thanks for the lovely warm welcome folks:hello:

Yes with my wilty veg and slow cooker habit, I think I may have found my second home:rotfl:. My mother who is an M&S finest kind of lady despairs of me but I know brocolli stalk soup is where it's at!!!

Biggest pleasure today was finding the car started first time since last Tue and that I AM able to drive in these conditions. (Lots of goes to pass my test and disparaging remarks from loved ones who think I am a rubbish driver:(.)

Looking forward to lots more posts.

    Hi all

Tofu Tanya, welcome to the thread!

Introuble28, I would love it if we could have an OS book swap club but unfortunately it is not possible because we are not allowed to exchange personal details on the forum (not sure how we could work it out otherwise). We tend to swap books and other stuff when we meet though!

Juliapenguin, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your mum. Glad you felt able to come and post on this thread, where you will always find a warm welcome and friendly people.

Marmite, yes thank you it was a great day, the fair was very special. The day ended with another very special thing, a very interesting documentary about how the British secret services fooled the nazi re. landing in Sicily, called "Operation Mincemeat". I am not sure whether it was on BBC 1 or 2 but if anyone is interested, it is really worth watching! Much more interesting - and incredible - than fiction!

dizzy lizzie, I have never read Ruth Rendell but I will look her up, thank you for the tip (this time I shall look in the library though, as I recognise the name so I shall be "good" and not make a beeline to Amazon to buy yet more books!).

Ampersand,I would be happy and honoured to share a wee dram and slainte the time away with you at the next meet!

Tealady, glad you enjoyed the Taste of Christmas, pity you missed the handsome fake Scots but there was plenty of other stuff to see - and taste - as you discovered. I was tantalised by all those cheese and wine tasters, none of which I could have *sigh* - the whisky was a real exception!

Here are my pleasures for today:

1 - Early this morning DS called me while he was doing his paper round to ask whether I was going to be in. I said yes so he said that he would cook scrambled eggs with chili for the two of us. How lovely and considerate of him! It was lovely, too!

2 - Keep fit class - felt quite energetic so I jumped about a lot (rather than march limply).

3 - DD made lunch, pasta and pea soup, which I found ready on my return from keep fit. I am so lucky to have my darling children taking such good care of their mum!

4 - Picked the last of the runner beans from the garden. The pods are inedible but the beans inside will be great for soup once they have been soaked for a while. My next job after I finish here is to go and shell them.

5 - All hands on decks, DS, DD, her BF and myself had a good clean up all around. DD and BF did the kitchen, DS did the living room and I did the bathroom - in real depth, including scrubbing inside toilet with vinegar (from Approved Food - I knew it would come handy!). Now the house looks really good, except for study room (need to tackle the paperwork!) and my bedroom (next project).

6 - After DD and her BF went to visit a friend, after all the cleanout, DS and I had a cup of tea and a mince pie and watched the Operation Mincemeat documentary on catch up tv. Oooopppps I just read "mince pie" and "mincemeat" and made a gruesome association *ARGHHH* just as well I did not think about it as I was watching the programme!

Off to shell beans and get dinner ready now, see you all tomorrow and have a great evening x
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
