  • sparrer - how fantastic to see a tawny owl in the daytime. :j
Frugalpam - well done on finishing your christmas shopping already. :T
newlywed - well done on the weight loss.:T

Had a bit of a rubbish day today as we were unable to get into town for the boy's and DH's courses. We started the journey but 2 hours later (should've taken 30 mins) another blizzard started up so we had to admit defeat and crawl home again. Also missed DS2's swimming lesson so feel that today was wasted!

Let's see what I can find:

    1) The journey was hair-raising but we got home safely.
    2) No snow hardly on the coast road (just inland) so I was able to get to Mr M's.
    3) Picked up some whoopsied lambs liver and made nice liver and onions for dinner.
    4) Found out that I only have 3 more car payments till the car is paid off completely. That'll be one less financial monthly strain.
    5) We have a nice fire going. It's nice to feel safe at home :)

    Last couple of days:

    1. Nice comfortable feeling of having the storecupboard well stocked up if snow arrives here.
    2. Had a brief session on the outdoor gym in our local park while the sun was shining.. Totally free so no gym subscription to pay.
    3. Stocking up with free library books in case we're snowed in.
    4. Finding that our phone bill is in credit.
    5. Steaming bowl of home made lentil soup for lunch.
  • My five for the last few days:

1 The curtain rail in the sitting room is fixed,so I've got the thicker curtains up.It makes a big difference. Also have managed to put a curtain rail up in the kitchen.Just need to find some curtains now.

2 Used my lovely Kenwood mixer,it's a dream to use.

3 Started prep for Black Bun-have the dried fruit and spices marinading in some brandy. Will probably make it this Friday-first attempt.

4 Went for a brisk walk on Sunday.

    5 Got paid today.

Blimus glad to read that your SC Christmas puds are a success.

Ampersand I also took a dislike to Ruth (The Pink Whisk),but won't let that get in the way of a good recipe!
I'm not a teacher BTW,I'm a nurse and work in a hospital in Lausanne.
Alice Herz-Sommer:I read about this remarkable woman this year.I think there was an article on the BBC website.
Love the sound of the polenta cake!

Patchwork Quilt sounds like your daughter had a lovely birthday!

Frith hope the building work goes smoothly, well done on shifting all those bricks.

Ginger Snap hope your hen is better soon/now.Is it usual to moult at this time of year?

Niksyg Great news about the house, congratulations!

CCP glad you found your earring.

Frugalpam Well done on your decision to procede with voluntary redundancy. You probably need some time to digest this.Hope you feel more at ease with the decision.

Caterina Panettone for breakfast sounds nice! You must be pleased now to have finished your job.

Ladyhawk I used to love playing badminton as a child. It's a great game.Is this the first time you've played?I've often thought about taking it up again.Must look into it.

Sorry to those I've missed. It's getting late, time to go to bed I think.

Good night and sweet dreams x

    Evening,

Just a quick post tonight as I need my bed.

    1. Busy hour before leaving for work this morning with the last of the ironing cleared well until tomorrow anyway
    2. Paying the deposit on DD school trip next year. She is off to Morrocco for Easter, I am so jealous. Very expensive but feel it is a once in a life time trip so we are going to hit the savings accounts which thanks to MSE we have now.
    3. Lovely friend at work buying me a walnut whip, yummy
    4. Another lovely collegue offering to pick me up from Manchester airport on Friday morning and drop me off later in the day.
    5. Lift home from work and as walked in no travel fares today.
    6. Another £3 in luncheon vouchers in the post today. Have enough now for some nice goodies in the coming weeks

    Monday's musings....

    1. Yippee! No snow here :)

    2. Worked from home and managed to keep the heating off until about 4pm, but I was a little icicle by then!

    3. DD had a lovely time playing at a friend's and has been invited back any time :)

    4. Some items I ordered off ebay on Saturday night arrived this morning! Super speedy, nice and snuggly snoods for me and DD :):)

    5. My best mummy status was confirmed as I told DD she could sleep in my bed without her asking, well....I do like a nice human hot water bottle, lol.

    6. Walked to school this morning saving petrol.

    7. Lovely chat with my mummy this afternoon, we don't often get the chance for a natter due to DD/ me being too tired later in the evening to call her.

Yawn, really tired now, must get upstairs to DD :)

    5 for today (Monday).

    1) Got driven to Ikea by my sister. I then had to spend 2.5 hours putting together a mammoth chest of drawers for her, but it was good to look around and have a 99p breakfast.

    2) Boys quite happy today and bigger son rehearsed his Christmas play role.

    3) Had my washing dried by MrN's tumble dryer. But he had his washing washed in my machine as his has frozen up! (in the outhouse).

    4) Sat by the stove with the cat. It is still -4 outside and hasn't been above freezing for a couple of days. No snow yet though.

    5) MrN came round and has just gone. :-)

beachbaby it's horrible for you having to drive in the snow but the hills must look stunning. I spent one Christmas with friends in Old Town, a little south of you, the scenery was just breathtaking. Just make sure you have some old carpet or similar in the car to help get a grip in the snow if you should need it, and your tyres are pumped up to their max. Listen to Mother! ;)
ampersand after all our tales of wildlife, when you said you heard amazing cricket through the night I had visions of a little creature hopping about in the grass! In fact you were listening to several of them, only the two-legged kind :D
Ladyhawk had to chuckle at the busy young business woman in her Shawn the Sheep slippies :rotfl:
newlywed well done on the weight loss, and getting the tax credits sorted out. That'll be a great help
Blimus good for you turning back when it got too bad to drive in. You say it was a wasted day but at least you were all safe. The liver and onions sounds , haven't had it for ages
marmite had to smile at having the curtain rail but no curtains, that's the sort of thing I do. Your No5 sounds good, always nice when that time comes around :)

    1. Saw a heron taking flight from a tree in almost the same spot I saw the owl yesterday...is it a bird convention on the wing, I wonder? There seems to be quite a few herons about atm
    2. Went to my exercise class, just ahead of the blizzard which I could see in my rear view mirror. A strange sight, and quite eerie
    3. Had coffee with DD and confirmed my acceptance to Christmas dinner as I don't want to risk driving oop norf to DS, much as I'll miss seeing him. What it is to be popular :)
    4. Called in to Mr A, got a box of Thorntons half price, for DGD2 to give to her Mum
    5. A smattering of snow this evening but I don't have to go out at all til Wednesday evening :D

    Night night, sleep tight
    S x

    Hi all

I am really enjoying reading about all your viewings of wildlife! Hope you will all enjoy this:

Frugalpam, we are finishing work on the same week (you Wednesday me Thursday), yippee for us! We can meet online to compare notes about our newly-found freedom!

Introuble28 sorry you are having difficult times at work. It is really hard to find good, sensitive management. When it happens the workplace can be a real joy to be in, but when the opposite happens it is a nightmare, no matter how much you like the job itself. Hope things improve for you!

marmite, Unfortunately not over yet, my job finishes on Thursday (mind you, I might be snowed in so might not be able to go for the last couple of days - wishful thinking!). Panettone for breakfast is AWESOME - a real once-a-year event. Beats cereals hands down!

Here are my pleasures for yesterday and today:

    Yesterday (Monday):

1 - Keep fit class, I managed to drag myself there AND keep up!

2 - Pasta & peas soup lunch with DS, it is always good to have a quiet lunchtime with him, as it is the only time we really sit and chat about this and that.

3 - The DVDs I ordered for DS arrived so he is really happy and looking forward to watching them.

4 - Started my volunteering! The people in the office seem really nice and pleasant and we shared a few laughs. I shall go ad-hoc for the month of December and then make it a regular commitment from January.

5 - AGM at the place I volunteered, was very interesting and also we had lots of nice nibbles!

6 - Before going to the AGM I managed to cook dinner for the family and they were very happy.

Today (only morning yet but lots of pleasures already):

1 - Up early to prepare sandwiches for DH (avocado onion and mayonnaise).

2 - Snow! A pleasure to see, but not sure it is a pleasure for DS who is doing his paper rounds!

3 - In fact DS called me asking in advance to make him a cup of hot coffee. So I made him a nice hot breakfast too (sauteed potatoes with onion and tomato, all mashed up together, on toast and covered with grated cheddar). He was truly delighted!

4 - A full pan of kidney beans on the cooker - planning bean burgers for tonight dinner!

5 - Also planning a breadmaking afternoon, as I am not sure I can be bothered going out in the snow to buy bread.

6 - Planning a DVD night at home with the family (The Sicilian Clan with Alain Delon, does anyone remember him? Heartbreaker in the 70s!).

7 - Looking forward to seeing DD, who has been out and about a lot and at her BF's last night.

Have a good day everybody and keep warm and safe! x
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
  • Caterina I've just remembered that last year at New Year, when my sister was here,we had panettone with HM lemon curd for breakfast a few times. It was really good!
  • Mmm lemon curd...

    1) Spent an hour and a half getting five miles from home this morning in an effort to get into work. Texted the immediate boss (who had not left yet) and was told to turn around and take the day off.
    2) Wore my free hand-knitted jumper and I can honestly say that it is extremely warm and comfortable, but not at all stylish. On days like this, I think I can live with that.
    3) My cousin's husband turned up last night. DH walked in (early) and said, "Have we got any spare tea?" followed shortly by said cousin's husband. He lives absolutely miles away and had got stuck on the motorway before deciding to come back and call in here for a cup of tea. Fortunately, there was enough yellow-sticker chicken and enough flapjack to stoke him up before the second attempt at the journey home.
    4) Managed to do some studying today. I will get there.
    5) There is enough chocolate tart left over from dessert at my friend's house yesterday so that I don't have to bake today. Not sure about the main course, though. Since the chicken has gone, a bowl of lentil stew might be all we can have.
