  • Good evening,

I don't know if I'll manage 5 for today to be honest.

1 I'm safe at home and have a day off tomorrow.

2 My curtain rail in the sitting room is fixed and curtains up,it makes such a difference.Especially since it's now snowing heavily here.

3 Here being Switzerland, they know how to deal with snow. The gritters are out at 5am,even in the country!Nothing grinds to a halt here.(I always say that if Switzerland didn't exist,we'd have to invent it).

4 Have just started the new Kate Atkinson book 'Started Early,Took My Dog'.I've read all her Jackson Brodie books, and have really enjoyed them,so looking forward to this one.Hopefully get stuck into it tomorrow.TBH I have a slight crush on Mr Brodie, even though he is a fictional character.

    5 Tried an unusual recipe...Spaghetti with Marmite,very nice(honest)!

Blimus I was itching to taste one of my Christmas puddings,as I wanted to be certain it was ok.So I cut it in half, slightly off-centre,and then cut off a slice from the middle.(I then cemented the two halfs together with a teaspoon of honey). It tasted good,as good as cold Christmas pud can be!So definitely a success in the slow cooker.I'm storing them individually wrapped in baking parchment then aluminium foil in a cupboard.I'll feed them brandy once or twice as well.

This is the recipe I used:

Wishing all of you a cosy evening x

Blimus I think that there is a long list of mad women catfighting over poor Peter! Have a look at the Edwardian Farm thread. BTW, yesterday I was sitting in the living room and watching it with DH and I think I really pi**ed him off because every time Peter appeared I was like "PHWOARRRRRR LOOK AT HIM!!!!". DH gave me a look of disdain and said that he really did not understand what I see in him (and just as well LOL). I bickered back that he was just jealous! Wonder if the producers realise what sex bomb they have on their hands? George Clooney eat your heart out!

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: I have to watch the Edwardian Farm in silence. I feel it would be pushing it a bit as DH already has to put up with all manner of carry-on style faces and phwoars over Gael Garcia Bernal!

    Here are mine for today:
    1) Made two mini 'test' xmas puds in the slow cooker. Missed out the brandy as we didn't have any but the next one I make would definitely benefit from a slug.
    2) Was nice to stay in the warm today. Didn't step out at all. And so this means it was a NSD too.
    3) Enjoying making a slouchy beanie hat to match my fingerless gloves.
    4) Finding some bargain presents on ebay for the boys and DH.
    5) Having a chat with my mum about us all possibly renting a villa in Spain next year with my sister and her family too. Hope it comes together - it wopuld be great!

Have a great night everyone :)

    Evening

    Pleasures for today:
    1. Didn't have to go to the Horsham office today so only 20 minutes travel time to the office
    2. Lovely HM butternut squash soup for lunch and shared with a couple of people in the office
    3. Lift home from work always a pleasure
    4. Deciding with OH to spend christmas at my parents. When I phoned to check they hadn't made any other arrangements my mum cried:eek: I think they are pleased we are spending the holiday with them and got to say I'm really excited as well. Inlaws are great but will be nice to be with my parents for a change.
    5. I have my bathroom back, it looks all lovely and shiny but is very echoey.

Hugs to all who need them.

I'm joining in the like/dislike Personal Column tonight.

Caterina - Giles Coren is not a patch on his late father for writing, wit or style. I remember the arrival of his Restaurant critic pieces in the Grauniad and wondered what on Earth the point was. No matter how hard he tries - and this is surely much of the problem - he hasn't got it.

Refs to pink whisk - 2 of late on here. I took an instant dislike to this woman when I saw her in The Great British Bakeoff. In usual fashion attempted to counter this every time she came on...and could not. I'm sure she'd feel the same about me. Schadenfreude moment when chap won - sorry, but there it is.

    Strictly 5ive Pleasures:
    1. Bitterly cold to early gym this morning by 6.45 - out in dark, back in light by 8 and knowing I'd done it. Knew England would have collapsed in cricket by time I returned: they had. Great for Oz bowler Peter Siddle to have hat-trick on his birthday.
    2. Boiled up the strained medlar juice and bottled 7 more jars of jelly.
    3. Four of the last gasp cyclamen have survived, acclimatised and one is blooming. Beautiful crimson flowers, with variegated heart-shaped leaves of deep green and silver. Now a real pleasure at my kitchen window.
    4. Enjoying the sheep's daily rhythm - mood, movement, progress round field, timing. I see this as I do the morning and afternoon flights of the long-tailed tits.
    5. Haynes Combustion engine[splendid grown-up boy toy and well-reviewed] - half-price in Argos - and the online Reservation system worked:-) UnChrimbo, as I no longer do The Day[ceased quite some years ago.]

Some dark annoyance and worse came today, which has no place here.
Special empathy of a hot chocolate luxe-y kind to many of you whose recent posts indicate the like. So, loving hugs all round tonight and that very particular blessing of a quiet mind and a peaceful heart.
    ########
marmite - I did a double-take when reading of your heavy snow, but then saw where you are and now the 'French all day' is explained. Lucky you! I hadn't liked to ask and wondered if you were a teacher.
ccp - thought of you when the Woman Lawson went into florid-overdrive tonight re: the colour of her grandma's lemon Polenta Cake mixture, but she was right to do so. The extra-yellowy yellow of the superyellow mix deserved it.

....and just to maintain my usual flexible 5:
    6. is posting sth and walking on to buy my free-range eggs from village Mick. His girls' yolks are this colour too and give me pleasure each time I use an egg.

  • Good evening. I've been in and out of work all day today but my pleasures have come this evening. The girls are stopping with their dad tonight so the house feels very empty, but...
    1. Coming home at 10pm to a warm, safe, house and a dog with a very waggy tail.
    2. Putting on the slippers which I had left on the radiator before I went out.
    3. Two hot water bottles in my bed tonight.
    4. A large glass of wine (no work tomorrow).
    5. Some homemade ginger biscuits which I made earlier.
No work tomorrow and girlies home after school. I cant believe it's Friday already!.
    Love to all. X

    Pleasures for the day:

    1. Mum and Dad have been fretting for yonks about their faulty ceiling light in their shower room. We tried to get a suitable one last week but failed to do so. Last night i did a search on some reasonably close DIY stores and found a suitable sealed light fitting in a store about 6 miles away.... so reserved it and went to pick it up today. Took it to Mum and Dad's and they are both chuffed, they phoned an electrician they know who has agreed to come and fit it when he next passes their way.

    2. Took mum to Dunelm Mill to pick up some curtains she had reserved.

    3. Helped to take Mum and Dad's lounge curtains down and to put up the two sets of new curtains.

    4. Managed an NSD.

    5. Just remembered it is the First Sunday of Advent this coming weekend, so i'm looking forward to digging out my advent wreath and candles :-)

Just a quick post beachbaby at the tone of your post - such a wonderful turnaround, even through your hiccups, and I have paused several times over ex-'s use of word 'patronise' in THAT earlier post of yours.
It tells a story and resonates in every definition of that word.
I thought of it again this morning when hearing this:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00w227c - Melvyn Bragg and guests discussing Metaphor. It was terrific and made me recall the Lakoff and Johnson title: Metaphors We Live By - v.v.v.g.

  • Thank you for wishing me better soon. I'm very nearly there now.

    1) Went back to work on Wednesday, despite feeling rather wobbly, and was surprised by the number of people who said they were glad to have me back.
    2) Rhubarb vodka. Stops a 2 am coughing fit in about five minutes.
    3) DD's bf is home and here for the weekend, so she is a happy bunny.
    4) Red knickers. (Is this too much information?) Went to the local hospital this morning for tests, which seem to be inconclusive, unfortunately. I had to put on a gown, put all my things in a basket etc. The staff try very hard but it still feels less than glamourous. Fortunately, I had put on some nice underwear and it just made me feel a little bit less of a sausage in a machine.
    5) Went to see my allotment. The bee lady has now persuaded a scrap metal merchant to take away the last remaining piece of rubbish - a decaying tractor/trailer. How does she do it? We now have about a third more growing space than we started with. Plus she has been lining more of the path with brick edging, cutting down a tree, shifting paving stones and so forth. She is absolutely amazing.

beachbaby your evening sounds lovely and relaxing, enjoy them when you get the chance :D. Re going tp Preston I've decided not to chance getting stuck in snow, and think two Christmases with the ex in the 10 years we've been apart is more than enough ;)
Primrose thank you for the advice :D, I've frozen them and will do same with the other pulses which need soaking etc. Fortunately the majority of what I have can be used from the pack.
Caterina AF is such fun, by the time it arrives you've forgotten some of what you ordered so undoing it is a bit like Christmas :D. Good luck with the p/t doula job, hope it works out for you
CCP that was good of the veg box people, pity the 'big boys' don't take a leaf from the little mans book at times. Well done on turning the heating up, it may cost a little more but as they say, any idiot can be cold.
marmite the spag with marmite sounds, umm...interesting? I'm a Vegemite girl meself, might have a go with that instead. Good for the Swiss knowing how to deal with snow. We have snow in UK every year without fail but still the whole of UK goes to piece at the sign of a flake
Blimus a villa in Spain sounds something to hold on to in this disgustingly cold weather. Hope you get a super family holiday together :)
Patchwork will keep everything x'ed for you re the tests and hope they can come up with a negative result. The bee lady is wonderful, as are many of these country women, who just seem to wave a wand and problems are sorted. Wish I had a wand like hers for a few minutes :D

    1. Got to physio early and went straight in as I was the first appt of the day
    2. Went to DD's afterwards and got my first cuppa at 10.30am. It tasted like nectar!
    3. DD left at 11.30am so as planned I had a lovely time with the dogs and the parrot
    4. DGD2 came home from school with a friend to do their homework, we had a wonderful time discussing the economy and immigration. They'd not heard of Enoch Powell until today so hopefully their tutor will be impressed with their work :o
5 DSon.i.L came home from work and told me if I didn't go there for Christmas because it was snowing he'd come and get me. Bless him :)
    6. Got home at 6pm to find the electricity back on and the house warming up nicely

    Night night, sweet dreams

    Posting early today -
    I have 5.

    1. Demons departed.
    2. BBC World Service and listening to cricket[R5X] on and off through night,
    3. Have just heard this remarkable lady, Alice Herz-Sommer, much celebration of her 107th birthday today - and at her piano still:
    http://search.bbc.co.uk/search?suggid=sp%3Aalice_roberts&go=toolbar&uri=%2Fworldservice%2F&q=Alice+Herz-Sommer
4.First white frost morning, so I'm glad I put the surviving cyclamen in shelter yesterday.
    5. Re-did hottie with breakfast at 6 and am carrying on, snugly reading. Have even dialled heating around to be on....aiming for 'don't care' and making show of acting guilt-free.
    6. World Service is now paying homage to Freddie Mercury - away to listen.
    7....with another coffee:o.

    Happy Friday everyone.
