  • Well it was a funny day yesterday, started well but ended up with me in meltdown. I always seem to take on too much to please others and end up shattered and feeling terrible. (I am sure my counsellor would have a lot to say about this!) But here are the positives:

    1. Up really early on Saturday morning so went to the gym by 7.45am and had a great catch up with my gym buddy. Enjoyed the work out too of course!

    2. Had been persuaded to take DD and friend from school into town so picked up friend (who I have not met before) and was invited in for coffee by her mum. She was really lovely and friendly and we enjoyed a relaxed and happy chat for half hour or so. DS (Who I had with me as OH was going to work) was amazingly good for once and sat politely, eating his french fancy!!

    3. Didn't spend anything in town as DS and I wandered round trying to use up the time before meeting DD and friend for lunch.

    4. Had lunch in Wetherspoons which didn't break the bank and was very filling. My spicy chicken wrap was very tasty and the kids ate all their meals which always makes me happy! We had to wait about half an hour to get our meals but no one complained. :)

    5. After another hour or so of shopping made our way home. DD's friend said she loved our garden and the chickens and was delightful company. Hope DD will see a lot more of her as its nice to have a child around who can hold a conversation with adults.

I have an urge to make HM bread today...we will see.

Hugs to all who need them, hope you all have a good Sunday.

Then, I found that I'd got the date wrong for the comedian we were supposed to see and had missed him!

    :mad:Poor Kitchenbunny!

I have done this exact thing as well. When I lived in Canada as a student I had absolutely no spare cash for the 6 months I was there. Through scrimping and saving I managed to get some money together to get tickets for a band I really like who were playing in Toronto. My friend was seconded to work from the Toronto office at the same time I was there and he landed on the day of the concert, so I got him tickets as well. When I arrived at his apartment he told me that the concert had been the night before:mad: So all my spare cash was wasted :( Gutted was not the word.

Anyway big hugs to you. I hope the driving goes well today.

Sparrer What a brilliant day out! I wish I lived closer to London. What a lovely little picture I have of you sitting somewhat sheepishly in the first class carriage. :)

    Todays:

    1. Another visit to our garden this morning from a green parakeet - it has visited us several times this week and is a joy to behold. And then as we were watching it, it was joined by a second one and they spent about 10 minutes moving around our bird feeders.
    2. Attending our village Remembrance Sunday ceremony at the War Memorial, and noticing how much bigger the crowd was this year, including more schoolchildren. It good that this custom is being passed from generation to generation.
    3. Lancashire Hot Pot for lunch, accompanied by the rain lashing down on the windows. Just the right sort of meal for that kind of weather.
    4. Going to a Craft fair this afternoon and finding a wood turner who can make exactly the sort of matching beech wood blocks we want to raise the legs and the height of the sofa we bought a while back. Have been searching all the Mobility Aids suppliers to try and find something suitable, but couldn't find anything which wasn't absolutely hideous.

Evening all... it going to have to be an early one tonight and I slept very badly last night and have an early morning tomorrow.

For the first time in my life I had the most dreadful indigestion last night which made sleeping very difficult. I gave up at 3am and glugged some out of date gaviscon which I have had since I had a small ulcer. Thank goodness I had some as I was in agony.

    1) The upside of the agony was that I read a good portion of "Confessions of an Eco Shopper" - a fascinating book and well recommented. It charts the trials and tribulations of a woman in York trying to shop more sustainably.

    2) I took my new (discounted) coat back to Deb'nhams as the lining had split. I really wanted a replacement but the only one they had in stock was tatty. They offered to send my one off to their tailors or to give me £14 back. I got them up to £21.20 which meant that I actually got my coat for £50 instead of the £85 that was on the ticket. I will take it along to the lady who is doing my fancy dress outfit for the work Christmas party who will fix it up very cheaply for me. The £21.20 will go straight into my bank account which will help me on my way to not being overdrawn by the end of the month.

    3) Listed a few things on Freecycle. I can't believe how rude some people are "I can collect at 5pm" etc... no please or anything! Unless someone polite replies it will all be going to the cherridy shop. Speaking of which mine is rediculously expensive... £6-8 for a denim skirt!! Grrr.... I would buy a lot more if they were more reasonable.

    4) Listed a few things on eB*y - I don't hold out much hope for sales of any value but something is better than nothing.

    5) Supper is nice and easy from the freezer... I think it is bolognaise. So I am going to add some lentils to pad it out and then make a lasagne. Yum... I love lasagne.

Gingersnap - my truffles weren't strictly truffles even though that's what I called them and I think they can pass for them. It is based on a choccy fudgy recipe I used to make as a kid:

    - melt 250g butter
    - stir in 500g icing sugar and 2T cocoa powder
    - add 1 egg
    - stir in 1 pack of biscuits (I used MrA's smart price Nice Biscuits but anything short bready/ short cakey or similar would work fine)
    - spread into greaseproof paper lined baking tray and leave to set and cut into squares.

What I did was, when it was nearly set, I scooped it into little balls, then rolled them in drinking chocolate, but you could roll them in coconut, icing sugar, chocolate sprinkles or anything you like.

    Night all - sleep tight.

  • Caterina and Sparrer - that's so cool you got to meet each other :j

(((hugs))) and :kisses3: for everyone who has had rubbish days recently.

    Here are mine for today:
    1) More jobs ticked off the list.
    2) Was meant to be a NSD but saw that they had electric blankets in Mr M's for just £12. Got one for DS1. What's a pleasure for him is a pleasure for me!
    3) Very proud of both DS's today on the Remembrance (sp?) parade with the Sea Scouts. Loved DS2's serious marching and remembering to 'eyes right' at the right moment and very, very proud that DS1 was asked to lay the wreath at the memorial. Big lump in the throat from start to finish.
    4) Picked up some jumble for the mega old-style jumble sale we are planning for the scouts next year from a freegler. Am determined to make this one to remember (jumble sales just aren't the same anymore since ebay and car boots).
    5) Finally, waiting impatiently for the slow cooked pulled pork to be ready. The pleasure is in knowing that it'll be lovely :p

Hope everyone has a better week next week :)

    Hello all,
Has been a rather subdued day but enjoyable too. Went down to the Royal Marines Museum this morning for their remembrance service. It was wet and miserable but it was a really good service. Could have done with some waterproof mascara though, I can't help it but the last post always makes me cry. Brought back lots of lovely memories of dad. I think it affects me now even more though as OH is now in the marines and one of my closest friends goes on his first tour to Afghanistan in May.
Other pleasures have been a delicious lunch with mum before she went home.
Have been watching the festival of remembrance on iplayer this evening - so lots more tears! I am such a fool!

    Hi all

Many thanks to all of your comments re. the meet - I cannot recommend it strongly enough, please seriously consider organising one in your area if you cannot make it to an organised one! For me it is incredibly comforting to meet a group of people with whom I am immediately on the same wavelength, who do not bat an eyelid about sharing a pot of tea or discussing vouchers, or talking about our daily lives (who are all so different and yet remarkably similar!). I am so used to being taken for mad/mean/old-hippie-ish when I talk about my frugal ways with non OS people, that every meet for me feels like a homecoming!

glad that things are working with your DS and also well done on training your DP in OS ways!

Ladyhawk sorry to hear about big car expenses but good news about your successful negotiation re. coat refund!

    , get well soon!

Kitchenbunny and Ginger Snap (((HUGS))) to both, sometimes life has the bad habit of throwing a few baddies at us all at once, doesn't it? I hope that something remarkably good will happen soon to balance your difficult times. Well done to both of you for managing to find pleasures even if feeling so low, though!

Hugs to all who need them and great to read everybody's pleasures, as always.

Here are my pleasures for today:

1 - Tea and baked beans in bed, courtesy of DH

2 - Free lunch with DH at a local community centre, where they are starting an Over 50s Sunday lunch club, using food that will be donated by local supermarket, food that is about to reach its sell-by date. So the food does not get wasted and people can enjoy it. Today it was not donated because the project is only just starting, so we all paid a small amount as a donation.

3 - Another OSer and her DH came along, in fact she had given me the information about this. It was good to meet up with them, too, as well as meeting new people.

4 - Having been warned by text in advance that we would have a family meet on our return (see no.5 below), knowing that there would be a modicum of trouble, DD and DS thought well to do something to soften us up in advance, so when we came back home they had cleaned the kitchen, hoovered the stairs and tidied up the living room!

5 - A strange "pleasure", this one: I got very angry to find that DS again (for the umpteenth time) had gone to bed last night leaving all the electric gadgets on standby. During the bus journey to the lunch, DH and I decided that enough is enough and that we would have a family meeting, where we would inform the kids (also DD is not totally innocent about wasting and squandering) that it is high time that they start contributing financially and also with an effort around the house. So we went back and read them the riot act, then discussed contribution and it was agreed that they would give us £20 each per week. We made it clear that this does not leave them off the hook and free to waste resources and that if this were to happen we would ask them for more money. The meeting went quite well (considering) and I have a feeling (crossing fingers) that the message might have sank in - for the time being, at least!

    Good night everybody x
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

    Evening all.

Hugs to everyone who's had a difficult day today.

    My pleasures:

    1) A lazy sort of day doing not very much in particular. :o

    2) Made a bread pudding to use up a few odds and ends of stale bread that have been sitting in my freezer.

    3) Chicken and lentil stew for dinner, which will pad one chicken leg out into two meals (with the rest for lunch tomorrow).

    4) Finally got round to using my one and only HG chilli today, before it went furry.:eek::eek: but it's a hot one!

    5) Meeting friends for the weekly pub quiz tonight - I just hope it stops raining before I have to walk up there.

Sorry that's a bit brief tonight, but I must go and eat my stew so I've got time for bread pudding afterwards, before I head out into the rain. :D

    Have a nice evening, all.
Back after a very long break!
  • 1) DS is feeling slightly better. Every time he gets a sore throat I remember my brother getting glandular fever. Anyway, he was well enough to go into his job at the local cafe and is now playing happily at some computer game.
    2) Managed to get to church this morning. It was more informal than usual as the heating is being fixed, so we are sitting in the Hall, which has a separate system. I brought the service sheet home and I now have today's reading stuck on my little springy frog on the table for all to read.
    3) MIL and FIL are due shortly and I've managed to put a roast dinner together without having to resort to the supermarket.
    4) DD is doing a jigsaw puzzle on the rug! She's nearly 18 but it's kept her quiet all day.

Must go, forgot to put the parsnips on!
