5 OS Pleasures in your Day Today part 2

Good afternoon all. Ollie, your post is like Blackpool illuminations! Been feeling really low the last couple of days. Oh, how I hate being like that. I much prefer the positive days. I'm just feeling so lonely at the moment. Even when I was at the supermarket it seemed to be full of couples! Anyhow, I have been trying to concentrate on finding some blessings so here they are,
1. A friend coming for coffee and bringing me wine and chocolates.
2. Sending off my passport form. The last thing to be put back into my maiden name.
3. My first ever trip to Ikea. Didn't waste any money though. Just bought a cheap lamp I needed for my back room. Oh, and some candles!
4. A tidy house.
5. Unfortunately can't think of one just now. Hopefully more positive tomorrow.
Love to all, and I hope anyone feeling poorly over the last few days is feeling much better now. X0 -
Hi all
Beachbaby I am sorry that you are having a low time and congratulations for finding pleasures even when feeling like that (((HUGS))).
Here are my pleasures for the day:
1 - Porridge with honey and cinnamon for breakfast with DS.
2 - My friend came to go together to the Yoga show but as she was feeling very hungry she proposed that we have a curry instead (a good yoga practice if ever there was one!). So we did and it was delicious.
3 - In the curry house I complimented the owner on how good the food is, I told him that had I not already been married (he knows my husband well as we are regulars!) I would have married him just to be able to eat there every day. The expression of pleasure and pride on his face was a real joy.
4 - One of the customers there was the man who supplies him with spices from India and we got chatting, I said (jokingly) "if you are the spice man you got to bring me some turmeric, as I love it and put it in all my casserole". He took me seriously and promised that he would leave a packet of turmeric for me at the curry house next week. How kind and generous of him (and what a lovely excuse for another curry there!).
5 - After curry my friend and I went to the Reminiscence centre for a cup of tea and had a lovely chat wtih all the ladies who volunteer there.
6 - I am finding that the Courtesy Club thread, which I started on this forum and moved to the Arms, is quite popular and people post their little courtesies. It makes me so happy that people are interested in being kind and courteous!
Edited to add another pleasure:
7 - Forgot to add: I received a £10 John Lewis voucher in the post from a claim for lots of points that I had accumulated on some Internet site and forgot all about until not long ago. It will come handy for Christmas present buying!
Have a good night everybody xFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
Evening all.
beachbaby - I'm sorry you're feeling low at the moment - hugs to you, and I hope you feel better tomorrow.
Caterina - I'm not surprised you've been struggling at work - it sounds a chaotic sort of a place. I'm glad you're feeling happier now you've made the decision to escape. Glad you had a nice day today, too - for your curry!
Primrose - your soup experiments have inspired me - I'm going to do a batch of tomato soup tomorrow, I think, to use up some more of my HG tomatoes.
villagelife - lucky you seeing a nowl (no, it's not a typo - that's what we call them in my family!). We don't get them in Portsmouth (unsurprisingly), so I only see them on very rare occasions when visiting my parents in more rural parts.
sparrer - I admit I love autumn - it's my favourite time of year, which is a bit odd as I suffer from seasonal depression.I always claim it's because I come from a long line of farmers (my mum's traced back 8 generations so far (she's the one who has a real interest in such things)) and I'm therefore genetically programmed to appreciate harvest time. But that's probably (no, almost certainly) a load of rubbish!
I agree with you that the trees are prettier than normal this year, though.
My pleasures for today:
1) I've had a very frugal, OS month and have managed to put back into my savings account all the money I took out last month to pay for repairs to my car. :j I can now afford my new sofa again, and better get on with ordering it before something else breaks and the money vanishes again.
2) I got out of modelling my Halloween party costume in the office - I said I'd do it once I'd eaten my lunch and, by the time I'd finished fighting my way through some very hot soup, the person who'd asked had forgotten all about it.
3) Stuck my mini shopping list almost entirely at the supermarket this evening. The only addition was a bag of my favourite-thing-in-the-whole-world breakfast cereal, which was on special offer. :j
4) Got home just as the heavens opened, narrowly avoiding a drenching.
5) Received a £10 voucher for doing surveys, which will go towards the new pair of trousers I desperately need for work. :money:
Have a lovely evening, all.
(Not quite as good as Ollie's gallery, but they make me smile!)
Back after a very long break!0 -
Evening
Pleasures for today:
1. Trip to London with DD today, used family railcard so cheap train tickets. Went to the Tate Modern and the National Gallery (both free) so very MSE
2. Lots of walking around London with DD and a couple of trips on double decker buses. Both the best way to see London
3. Lunch at Fire and Stone Pizza Restaurant using a voucher, thank you MSE:money:
4. Chat with friend on phone tonight catching up on gossip
5. DD finishing tidying her room without too much nagging
Hugs to all who need them0 -
Evening all,
1. A fairly relaxed Friday evening, doing easy evening dinner of egg on toast (I had 3 shhh dont tell, loved one had an omelette). Both shattered so easy option.
2. Picking up some bits from the charity shop. Damn I supposed to be de-cluttering, oh well only 2 things.
3. Having a lovely chat with an old boy (more or less his words!) about what to do with condensed milk! Put it in tea apparently was his tip. And coffee. Or on cereal.
4. Getting capsules for coffee at home. Still pricey but not as prcey as BuckStar prices.
5. Getting a parking space just when I needed one. Getting into said space. Then when I was leaving, wondering how the hell I'd managed to into that space to begin with, amazing!Declutter 300 things in December challenge, 9/300. Clear the living room. Re-organize storage
:cool2: Cherryprint: "More stuff = more stuff to tidy up!" Less things. Less stuff. More life.Fab thread: Long daily walks

frugalpam - congrats on 21 months of no-smoking :T
house elf - Sounds like you've had some lovely family time this half term
julie - how lovely of your neighbours, what a great haul! My neighbour bought round a couple of items for my son yesterday. It's so nice to have such great neighbours.
Caterina - fabulous news about your decision. Really, really pleased for you. :j
Ladyhawk - I love hearing about your job. Chip testing? Fabulous
sparrer - love your idea of popping the candle samples in with christmas cards. What a lovely surprise they would be.
Ollie - Your knitted gifts sound so lovely. Very envious of anyone who is creative.
beachbaby - sorry to hear that you're feeling so low at the moment. (((hugs))) to you.
Caterina - Loving your Courtesy Club thread. I keep forgetting to go over to the Arms as I don't usually look at that board. Hope the Arms regulars are being courteous though!
CCP - Well done on managing to put the money back in as savings. No mean feat when there seems to always be something that comes out of the blue and needs money throwing at it! :T
Here are mine for today:
1) Got a washing machine! :j I am absolutely over the moon about this. Now I just need to spend most of tomorrow going through the mountain of dirty clothing that built up in the past two weeks.
2) Met up with some other home-ed families for a natter and some playing.
3) The most amazing sunset which bathed all the fields in a fabulous orange glow as we drove back from Norwich.
4) A very windy day here but thankfully not so cold out as we turned out storage heating back off and hope to keep it off for a bit longer.
5) The in-laws are visiting. This can often be a time of intense stress and negativity but so far so goodThe pleasure is for the lack of moaning, not the visit. (I think I need a dose of Caterina's Courtesy Club to remind me not to be so mean-spirited) :rotfl:
Have a great weekend everyoneDFW Nerd 941 Proud to be dealing with my debt

Evening all,
*YAWN*
I was supposed to be working from home today so was looking forward to mooching about the flat in my snuggly dressing gown and getting lots done. Alas I got a call at 9.15 from the boss' PA summonsing me into the office.
1) Seeing a hedghog shuffling across the road on my way home. I can't ever remember seeing a live one before and have had a fascination for them since I was little.
2) Really good 121 with the boss where we set my objectives for the coming year.
3) Chatting with my lovely friend L on the phone.
4) Relaxing this evening watching The Simpsons, CSI and the Mentalist.
and most importantly...
5) IT'S THE WEEKEND!!!!!!
Night all.
Sleep tight
LMan plans and God laughs...Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.0 -
1) A day at home with DD and DS pottering around. Did some studying and worked my way through a mountain of washing.
2) A long story this, but DH was told he couldn't take his holiday last year (!) He was owed three weeks, so he negotiated being paid for it rather than carrying it over (the situation is about the same this year for taking leave ie not a chance). Anyway, thank goodness, this has paid off our overdraft. I try to get things square by the end of the year, except for the mortgage, so taking into account the fact that we need some car repairs, we could be on target.
3) Planned Sunday School and decided I needed a jigsaw puzzle (doing things together). Went into town and got one for £1.75 in the charity shop.
4) Had a meal for £10 and then fell asleep in front of the tv together.
I think that's enough for one day!0 -
Caterina the mob deals look very interesting - I'd mistaken 'mob' to be an abbreviation of something, so used are we these days to 'text talk'
. How very kind of the curry house customer to bring you some turmeric...wonder if he reads MSE cos he'd be perfect for the Courtesy Club
house elf I'd mistakenly read 'craved two pumpkins', thought for a sec you weren't able to get any where you are
beachbaby well done on your restraint in Ikea. I only get to visit one every couple of years so I'd be buying everything in sight! Hope you're feeling better and able to feel more positively in the morning
CCP get your skates on and buy your new sofa before anything else gets in your way
Tealady your trip to London with your DD sounds lovely..can't wait to go as I haven't been for 3 years, and I am, after all, London born and bred...well, for the first 5 years, anyway. I had to laugh at your surprise at getting into/out of the parking space, I can just imagine it
Blimus, pleased to hear you have a washing machine but not so much fun having to do the laundry. Hope the visit stays as calm as it is at the mo
Ladyhawk rotten luck being summoned today, perhaps you can mooch at the weekend to make up for it. Hedgehogs are so sweet, we see the odd one here in our little square, and it's quite funny to watch one of the local cats approach it, then retreat hurriedly!
Patchwork excellent news about getting the overdraft paid off. Sounds like you had a lovely, cosy evening
1. A visit to a good garden centre this morning and bought my potted mini Victoria plum and a blackberry. I also wanted a tayberry but they'd run out, however the very kind lady phoned me when I was home to say they'd put a loganberry on the order free of charge as I'd been disappointed. People really are nice, aren't they?
2. Postie brought me a Boots voucher for doing surveys. Everyone's getting vouchers for the C word this year and it's only cost me time :T
3. Got some YS potatoes, parsnips and leeks in Mr M. Just right for my roast dinner tomorrow
4. Warm enough to leave the back door open all afternoon
5. Graham Norton on television, silly but he makes me laugh
Night night, sleep tight
S x0 -
Good Evening all  - not a brilliant day here today, but at least the overnight winds died down by morning and we didn't get any rain.
mineallmine - good to hear that work felt friendlier today - and lol at your dog :rotfl:. lol at your parking exploits as well- maybe they were different cars either side of you and had both parked a little closer to your vehicle
.
sparrer - thanks for asking - the anti's are beginning to 'kick-in' but still having to use the inhaler. Your samples sound gorgeous mmmmm. What a lovely lady at the Garden Centre - another one for the courtesy club :T!
villagelife - we often hear an owl around here at night, but have never managed to spot him since moving to this house. Where we lived previously, we had one that used to sit on top of the Telephone Pole.
Caterina - Hope you enjoyed the Yoga Show. wd on the JL voucher for those points AND the freebie Turmeric :T.
Primrose - How lovely that you and your DH can work in harmony as you're both doing :T.
house elf - love the description of Emmental being 'Cartoon Cheese' :rotfl:.
beachbaby - sorry to hear that you're feeling so down and missing being part of a couple - it really takes some getting used to -. I l-u-r-v-e Ikea and always come away with a 'little something' - have to say that they're very good for candles/candle holders. Their coffee and donuts are very good as well - and very reasonably priced too.
CCP -wd on sticking to your shopping list - I NEVER manage to just buy what I go out for. I always leave space for whoopsies - and then build around whatever I get my hands on. wd on your payout for surveys :T.
Tealady - wtg on your economical day trip to London :j.
Blimus - wtg on the washing machine :T - hope your weekend with your visitors goes well.
Ladyhawk - shame about the summons to the office, but wd on your 1-2-1. Great to see a hedgehog - probably scurrying away to find somewhere to hibernate for the winter - or stockpiling food for hibernation.
Patchwork - wtg on behing able to use the 'holiday pay' to sort your overdraft :T and a great bargain for Sunday School too.
Mine for today:
1. Visit from DS1 this morning - very unusual for him to be around here so early - on his way to Middlesborough to do a job on an empty property so called en route to the motorway! He and his girlfriend are moving house this weekend, so probably won't see anything else of him till next week.
2. Antibiotics are beginning to really kick-in properly but I'm still having the occasional coughing fit - usually when I've done some kind of exertion, or laugh. Inhaler is coming in useful :T.
3. Phone calls from DD during the day - she's finally facing up to her debts . Feel so sorry for her as not all her fault - her ex gave her ridiculous ideas way above their means. When they split, she realised that EVERYTHING had been in HER name, he'd never even had his name down as living there for Council Tax purposes or his Bank Account (that was down as his mum's address - though she didn't put him on her CT either - the incredible Invisible Man!). We've heard today that the CT people have finally got hold of him and he's been in Court today - probably been investigating where he's supposed to have been living for the past 18yrs ! At least DD is coming to terms about how much she owes and fingers crossed that she's learned two lessons out of this - ONE about men and TWO about spending money that you just don't have!!!
4. Trip to Asda at tea-time and availed myself of their whoopsie shelves - 4 Organic Kiwi Fruit 40p (£1.17); SmartPrice Bananas 36p (£1.07); 4 Dessert Pears 54p (£1.37); sprouts 42p (£1); Walkers S&V Crisps ripped bag 99p (£1.38); Hovis Seed Sensations Loaf 94p (£1.34); Lemon/Lime Flavoured Water 25p (41p); dented tin spaghetti 9p. Good Rollbacks as well 1kg carrots 50p/savoy cabbage 50p - we'll certainly be getting our 5-a-day this week :j.
5. Managed a bit more of the 'marathon shawl' - everytime I sit down, I pick up the knitting and do a couple of rows.
I'm now trying to sort out my ham shank for tomorrow's tea - but it may not be tomorrow's tea after all. When I took it out of it's shrink wrap, it smelled a bit 'sweaty'. Not sure if it's 'off' OR just that it's been tightly wrapped in polythene. It's marked 'Use By 4.11.2010.' so is within it's date and it's not discoloured/'slimey' in any way; the woman told me to take it home and freeze if I didn't want to use it till after 4.11.2010. OR just store it in the fridge if using it before that date. I didn't even walk around the shops after buying the darn thing - just caught the bus back home, so it wasn't out of refrigeration for very long - in fact it was next to a frozen item in the carrier bag.
It's been brought to the boil and had the water changed and now brought back to the boil and simmering. I'll have a sniff in a few minutes and see what I think. If in any doubt, I'll be on the phone to the shop first thing in the morning. No point in taking it back to complain - would cost me £5.00 busfare and the shank only cost £2.50 in the first place - but it's damn annoying . Wouldn't care, but I've got all the veggies prepped ready for going in the SC in the morning.
Going off for a read of the rest of the threads - speak again tomorrow - nitey nite and ((((hugs)))) where needed - love Ollie xxx0
