  • Hi all

Been MIA since early summer and have been so lethargic over the summer hols - stopped meal planning, stoppped dieting, stopped exercising, stopped trying out new recipes - so I am in desperate need of M.S.E and particularly this thread to get my bum in gear again!
Nice to 'see' all the familiar names and some new too. But sad to see that Ollibeak still hasn't been back on.

This atrocious August weather isn't hugely conducive to feeling good but here are my five for yesterday:

    1) Back on the MSE forum and feel like I'm getting it together again.
    2) Made my first weekly meal plan for weeks and started last night with home-made mushroom soup (made from a massive punnet of whoopsied shrooms) and a roasted red pepper, courgette and mushroom lasagne. Yummy.
    3) My oldest friend came round with her family and we just managed to feed the eight of us the lasagne and soup and supplemented it with ice lollies . They bought some nice white wine (haven't had any white wine for yonks and it was very nice too).
    4) Exercise regime ready to be started again. DS1 is also going to the local gym so that will inspire me to do more too.
    5) Watching Ultimate Big Brother - still my not-so 'dirty secret'. ;)

    Hi Blimus,

great to see you back (and thank you for giving me the perfect excuse to delay work by writing this - am working from home hehe!).

Please do not get discouraged, it happens to all of us sometimes, lose some of our OS ways and just go for spending sprees - I have done that a lot recently since starting work and getting better money, and don't even start me on the diet and exercise thing!

Coming to this forum is really a great cure because nobody judges us but we can learn by example. Personally when I read about simple pleasures like baking one's own bread and cakes, playing with children, planning meals, observing nature etc... it makes me remember that there are things which are much more fun than spending the afternoon picking up material stuff in Selfridges. Yes I really mean it (the best pleasure in Selfridges, though, is to get the FREEBIES!!!:rotfl:).

I am about to go to Italy for my holidays and will no doubt come back repentant re. expenses, diet, material stuff etc...by which time you will have already settled back and will feel like a veteran of the OS movement :Aagain (and will be able to pick up the pieces of me!).

Welcome back and lots of love xxx
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
  • Morning all,

Welcome glitterkitty, and all the other new posters
And ((Hugs)) to all in need.

I have been lurking for the last few weeks, as my husbands grandfather passed away as well as a young distant family member, so I seemed unable to see the pleasure in anything. But it cheered me up to see what everyone else was up to, especially frith's MrN - I can't wait for the next installment!

Here are my 5 for yesterday:
    - Seeing my in laws (they came back from abroad to go to the funeral) It was nice to see them, although the circumstances were not.
    - Inlaws telling me about the 5 kilos of blackberries they had picked in a neighbouring field to make jam, they are going to pick the remainder and freeze them for me when they go back tomorrow.
    - MIL commented at how much weight I had lost, its always nice when someone notices!
    - Finishing my library book - The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters, it was very good.
    - Best of all: Phonecall from my mum to say my youngest sister is in labour :T, I hope she has a painless and easy delivery, Her contractions are getting closer together and stronger by the hour.
    Value of prizes 2010 - 2017: £8374 Wins 2022: Magic set
    Debt free thanks to MSE
  • Mollythewestie - I am very sorry to hear of your bereavements. I hope the brand new baby might help to lessen the losses a little bit. Have a great big hug anyway!!

    My picks for the day...

    1) remembering to bring my umbrella from the car, because, boy, have I had to use it!! It is tipping down!
    2) the blinds not working quite right in the office, and workmen moving them up and down, open and closed. It allowed us to get more light into the office for a time, and it was lovely to have SOME natural light at least! Even with the rain hammering down.
    3) I have a job. I may not enjoy it all the time, and I might whinge mightily about it, but at least I have one.
    4) Dad managed to get to the Hospital in Salisbury (eventually... though Mum had to drive him instead of him taking the ambulance!) He is settling in, but is feeling quite poorly now. The journey down was stressful and that has set him back a bit.
    5) It is only 1 hour and 20 minutes until I get to go home and hibernate for the rest of the evening. Hoorah! :D

    Hi all again

mollythewestie I am very sorry for your family members deaths (HUGS). Good that you can find some pleasures here in this thread, I am sure this is probably the most positive and supportive thread that I have come across on the web, great people! Best wishes for your sister's birth, too xxx

Here is a bunch of pleasures from my day:

1 - Work from home, only a couple of hours and a few more hours here and there in the next few days - it means that next week I only have to go in for one day!

2 - Nice healthy breakfast of oats, banana, seeds and nuts with natural soya yogurt.

3 - Managed to make the yoga class even with the delayed train (just managed to squeeze in!).

4 - Cancelled the doctor's appointment because I feel much better (and my gp neighbour told me that it was not worth going anyway!).

5 - Visited my neighbour (the gp) who has a new baby, her first, and she is doing ever so well with the breastfeeding, I am delighted for her and her baby (a lovely little girl).

6 - Started reading one of my books and it is very entertaining and inspiring, it is called "The moneyless man" by Mark Boyle - here is something about his year's experiment without money (and a pic of him which makes me wish I was 20 years younger - isn't he a total DISH! hehehe). http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/green-living-blog/2009/oct/28/live-without-money

Have a great evening everybody x

Hello again. Back again after an absence and nice to catch up with everybodys' pleasures.
    1. Being able to be acceptive of being rained in because we didn't have to go to work.
    2. Picking courgettes, cucumbers, climbing beans, tomatoes, peppers & chillies and rejoicing in their freshness.
    3. Watching OH make Sweet Chilli Sauce, and experiment with making a pepper & chilli based Mexican Salsa.
    4. Our first ever experiment making home made bread without a breadmaker. Produced a malt loaf and a white one and both turned out very well.
    5. Finding a £5 note when clearing out a rarely used handbag.

    Evening all.

crickett - I hope your dad recovers from the stress of the move nice and quickly, and gets the benefit of being so much closer to your mum.

mollythewestie - it's lovely to hear / see from you (whichever it is you do on a forum). I'm sorry to hear about the bad time you're family have been having recently - hugs to you all. And best of luck to your sister!

Blimus - it's lovely to see you back, too. I hope you feel a bit happier once you've got the MSE thing going again. :)

Frith - congratulations on passing your course! :T

glitterkitty - hello, welcome, come on in! :hello: I look forward to reading your pleasures. :)

sparrer - lucky you to get free fruit and nuts. I haven't had cobnuts in years - I seem to remember that they're delicious, but I've never seen any round where I live so I can check. :(

Ladyhawk - last night's news about Felix sounds very promising - with a bit of luck it is an infection after all, which can be sorted out by the antibiotics. Fingers crossed for him!

    My five for today:

    1) Finally got started on a work report I've been putting off for weeks - it turned out to be much easier than I expected, and only took a couple of hours to write. :o

    2) Went shopping at lunchtime and found a money off voucher lurking in my bag. :)

    3) Picked another box full of HG tomatoes.

    4) Arranged to meet my parents for lunch on Saturday - they're a bit short of money at the moment with my grandmother's funeral to arrange, so it will be my treat. (Luckily I get paid tomorrow, or I wouldn't be able to afford it either.)

    5) I noticed yesterday that my washbasin had sprung a minor leak, and I haven't been able to get hold of the letting agents to tell them about it. When I got home this evening, though, I found the leak had stopped - I just hope it stays that way until I get back from my weekend away.

    Have a nice evening, all.
Back after a very long break!

Hi gintot sounds like a real comfort day with being driven, stew, reading matter and a glass :)
Welcome back Blimus :hello:, don't worry about letting slip for a bit, we all do from time to time otherwise life would be very tedious. Just pick yourself up, as the song says. Not too OS but I love the way you eked out the meal with ice lollies ;)
Mollie adding my sympathies to the others, your family is in my thoughts and prayers. Hoping your sister has a smooth birth and she and the new baby are doing well :)
crickett so pleased your Dad is close to home now, and hope a good night's sleep will help him over the journey :T
Caterina what an interesting article (made all the more pleasurable by looking at the author :o). Have a super time in Italy, will look forward to hearing about it when you get back
GirlySquare hope there are no after effects from the jabs. Lime cheesecake sounds , certainly one to look up in the recipe book
Primrose welcome back and congrats on the £5 find, the most I ever get is £1 from a supermarket trolley in some old jacket :o.

    my 5
    1. My funny little dog decided I'd slept in long enough, so jumped on the bed and 'sang' to me. A much nicer way to wake up than any alarm clock :D
    2. Thanks to my little hoard, bought at the start of the recession, I was able to put together a bag of goodies for a tombola my DD is running this weekend
    3. A black shoe polish mark on my cream sofa came out in the wash. Phew!
    4. Stopped at the farm shop for pet food to find bunches of sunflowers were reduced to half price, so I bought two. After all,10 sunflowers for the price of 5 is very OS. Isn't it....? :o
    5. Watching a documentary on Hurricane Katrina and thanking God we live in such a safe country
    6. The 1p phone call

    Night night, sleep tight
    S x
  • Ok, i've had a think, and I have come up with 3 pleasures for today :)

    1. My minor arm surgery went very well and I didn't need stitches, just those little tape things :)
    2. I got to spend some time with my boyfriend just doing nothing but watching Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em :)
    3. I had a really lovely tea using things that were in the freezer, and getting to cover it in my favourite sauce - Nando's Garlic Peri Peri :):)
the only debt left now is on credit cards! The evil loan has gone!! :j:j
