1. Veggiebox arrived with - yes, you've guessed it, more courgettes (anyone got a courgette cake recipe, like carrot cake, haven't tried that yet?) - but also some corn on the cob - first this year, an unexpected surprise and such a treat.
Hi,I copied down this recipe the other day.I haven't made it yet,but mean to!
Courgette Cake-serves 6
200g butter
200g caster sugar
2 eggs
150g courgettes
1 small apple
200g plain flour
large pinch salt
1/2tsp baking powder
pinch cinnamon
60g pecans
80g sultanas
Preheat oven to 180c
Butter and line base of loaf tin 20cm+12cm+9cm deep.Cream butter and sugar til light and fluffy.Beat eggs and mix in,one at a time, making sure that each fully incorporated before adding the next.Coarsely grate the courgettes and the apple.Sqeeze with hands to remove any excess moisture, then add to mix.
Mix the flour, salt, baking powder and cinnamon and gently fold into the mixture.
Stir in the nuts and fruit.Transfer to loaf tin and bake for about 1 hour or until golden and firm to the touch.
It sounds lovely. In fact I think that I might make it this weekend, all I need to buy are courgettes.
Happy baking!0 -
Hi All
5 for Monday
1. Pottering about cos still feeling delicate!
2. Made space in the freezer. (Also rediscovered stuff buried at the back which will ease the food budget situation!).
3. Got most of the holiday washing finished and dried on the line.
4. Meeting at the organisation where I am a trustee. Always nice to meet up with everyone, as they are all so nice.
5. Assembled a lasagne for tomorrows dinner.
5 for Tuesday
1. Trip to Motor museum with my friend and her twin boys who are DS2 friends from school. The boys really enjoyed the museum and we had time to stroll round the exhibits and chat. We liked the vintage caravan! The boys finished the day with a ride on the Go Kart track.
2. Made Nigellas Clementine cake for our picnic lunch. Unfortunately the boys were not keen, but the mummys managed the leftovers so nothing wasted!:rotfl:
3. More Clementine cake after dinner with creme fresh.
4. Watched Sherlock Homes on iPlayer.
5. Wrapped DS1 presents as it is his birthday Wed.
Back later with todays when I have actually done something!!!!!
Have a good day. HE x0 -
Morning all,
Here are my pleasures for yesterday:
- Getting up early. We were all up, showered and dressed by 7.30am. (DH always gets up before 6.30, but I am a lazy daisy and like to take my time getting ready in the morning!)
- Appointment with the dentist to have my new crown fitted which was all free. :j Thats the last free course of treatment for me though, as my maternity exemption has now run out.
- A healthy tea of Feta cheese, tomatoes, radish and red onion salad with jacket potato.
- Giving DD her first ham sandwich. She loved it and ate every last crumb!
- Getting lots more cleaning of the kitchen done.Value of prizes 2010 - 2017: £8374 Wins 2022: Magic set
Debt free thanks to MSE0 -
Let's see how many I can find for yesterday:
1. Delicious curry at a local restaurant with friends.
2. The portions at the restaurant being so big that I was able to take enough home for another meal. We all ended up doing it, including one person who had never "doggy-bagged" before and was a little embarrassed. I am shameless about such things and loathe food waste - far better for the food to come home with me rather than ending up in the bin!
3. Getting everything done on my "to do" list.
4. Reading my guidebook to Australia and getting mega excited about going there. I'm going to buy a car and drive around the country in a big figure of eight. Road trip here I come!
5. Snatching time at work during my lunch hour to read more of David Schwartz's book "The Magic of Thinking Big". It's very good, even though it comes across as very dated in its tone, and has given me food for thought.
Enjoy the rest of your day, everyone.Life is not a dress rehearsal.0 -
Hi all
A few pleasures from my day:
1 - Left work early because I had done all I needed to do and boss was working from home so could not give me anything else!
2 - Found a grocery shop near work that sells really good Italian bread loaves for very good prices
3 - Came home to lovely lunch (Lentil soup) courtesy of DD
4 - DD's BF chopped all our logs so now we have enough wood for at least a good part of winter
5 - Went to Lewisham and got some very nice Turkish (Pide) bread for 49 p a piece and frozen it for future use. Also cheap tomatoes, onions, parsley and lemons.
6 - Needed to buy some glasses (drinking, not specs) and could not find anything decent around Lewisham shops, not in Marks, not in BHS, so in the end I went to the 99p shop and found some reallly decent tumblers, 99p for a box of 6 - I got 2 so now I have 12 glasses for less than £2!
7 - Planning risotto with veg tonight
8 - Planning a quiet evening with a visit to the allotment to pick up courgettes and then do a bit of ironing and go to sleep early (am tired)
9 - A pleasure from last night (BTW THANK YOU MARTIN FOR ARRANGING IT!!!) A few weeks ago I bought two tickets to see Dreamboats and Petticoats, from this site where there was an offer for £10 tickets for best seats. DH and I went, the places were really superb and we had a lovely time, the show is fantastic, recommended to anyone who loves the 60s (or who was there in the first place, like us!).
Have a good evening everybody xxxFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
Evening all.
My pleasures for the past couple of days:
Yesterday:
1) Finally got round to phoning my mobile phone network to get the code I need to move to a cheaper deal elsewhere - I've been meaning to do it for months. I thought they might try to negotiate to get me to stay, but they reacted with utter indifference. Hey ho - their loss not mine!
2) The first of my HG tomatoes is starting to change colour.
3) Found a new variety of pasty RTC - perfect for dinner. I wasn't actually that impressed with it, but at least I didn't pay full price to find that out.
4) A friend had a load of money off vouchers for a local pub put through her door, and gave all the cider ones to me as she doesn't drink it.
5) Won £13 each on a pub quiz. It's not a quiz I do regularly as it finishes so late (it was still going on when I left at quarter to midnight), but it's worth doing occasionally as the prizes are pretty good.
Today:
1) Practically an NSD - I spent 25p on an apple to go with my lunch.
2) I've been meaning to sort out all the weeds that are growing between the paving stones on my patio, but I'm quite glad now I haven't - one of them's a pansy - I must have dropped a seed while I was planting them a few months ago. I now have a purple flower in the middle of my patio.
3) Had a nice cuddle with a neighbour's very sweet black and white cat, who was waiting for me when I got out of my car.
4) Nice OS dinner tonight - sausage casserole bulked out with lots of veg to make the very small amount of sausage go further.
5) Football later. As I was home late last night I'll watch it at home rather than going out - much more money-saving.
Have a nice evening all, particularly sparrer on her happy holidays.Back after a very long break!0 -
savingforoz I didn't get to the Harbour Festival, also hoping the weather clears up for the Balloon Fiesta
sparrer glad to hear you're having a great time
Broomstick my fave meal at Carluccio's is Penne Giardiniera which uses two courgettes
My five+ for the past couple of days:
1) breakfast in bed
2) cuddles from dd
3) slowing down and taking time getting ready each morning whilst not working this week
4) lunch at Carluccio's yesterday
5) free bottle of wine for joining their mailing list worth about £13!!!!
6) Carluccio's staff letting us have our free umbrellas early as it was chucking it down with rain (we're getting a picnic from them for Friday at the Balloon Fiesta)
7) Disney Store reducing some clothing to £2, bought some to put away for Xmas presents
8) dp buying me Elemis shower gels for my birthday, v. expensive but v. nice too
9) dd enjoying spending her birthday money on Hannah Montana dress at Disney Store
10) looking at my hairdresser's gorgeous wedding photos
11) wandering around Bath today, getting my other birthday pressie, a handbag from M&S
12) having a very non-mse week..."We have to be kind because everyone is fighting a great, great battle" - Sir Richard Attenborough
"There is a special place in hell for women who don't help other women" - Madeleine Albright0 -
GirlySquare - thanks for that pasta recipe (I know it wasn't aimed at me but I have a courgette glut too) - it sounds absolutely  and will be making its way on to my mealplan very soon.
Do I gather from your post that it is (or has been?) your birthday? If so, happy birthday! (I'm sorry if I missed it - I haven't been paying attention recently.)
Back after a very long break!0 -
It looks like this might possibly be another forum my ex-husband is tinkering with :-( There is now an "Acey" registered who is nothing to do with me. I have asked to have my username changed so might re-appear later looking slightly different! If MSE won't change it, I will have to start a whole new persona. :-(
Anyway, 5 for yesterday.
1) Went to Ludlow. I bought some jeans and a chunky cardigan plus a shirt for bigger son from a 2nd hand shop. In a different 2nd hand shop, I got a really smart T shirt for smaller son. There was a lovely cashmere jumper in Oxfam but it was £25! I'm sure it was worth that but it was just too much for me, I'm afraid.
2) Had an invitation to the wedding of my oldest friend. I am going to be a wreck on the day, I cried when I got the "hold the date" card and nearly cried yesterday just reading the invite!
3) The boys made a rope swing in the tree and played on it for ages.
4) Was invited to tea by my next door neighbour (well, we all were). I made the pudding.
I thought there would be 5, had a great day. That's the trouble with not updating til the next day, I can't remember what happened!
Will update about today later, possibly as ACEY or possibly in a different guise....0 -
CCP thanks for your message. It was my birthday yesterday, have to admit I usually play it down and just enjoy chilling out and having a few treats
. Carluccio's donate 50p to Action Against Hunger for every Penne Giardiniera sold
ACEY sorry to hear your ex is playing his games on here, look forward to hearing from you again, in whatever guise
Another for today:
13) dd wanting a photo with every 'Lions of Bath' lion we found today"We have to be kind because everyone is fighting a great, great battle" - Sir Richard Attenborough
"There is a special place in hell for women who don't help other women" - Madeleine Albright0
