frith - a perfect para. from Mila and wise, too, from Skint: Boys Grow Up:-) Yours are fine young men, credit for which goes to you as Mum, and indirectly your family. What you've come through via sons' father's shenanigans is magnificent. We've championed you strongly through the years now, past your self-doubt - ridiculous as that is. You're a clever, educated, accomplished, adventurous rôle model parent/friend/woman/Aunt/niece/daughter/sister et al. What a Mum for boys to have ! The one person you need to be having a care for now is YOU, with the life-changer diagnosis which is going to help you live long and well into grandma babysitting days.....

    1. 2 h-m seedy loaves were just out of early oven when I wrote as much this a.m. Grown-up night-time now. Loaves are sliced and stowed for freezing. Buttered crusts were yummy.

    2. hwb awaits in snuggly bed. Only 5 No More Books - and they're 5 exquisite Persephones!!!
    http://www.persephonebooks.co.uk/
    - all on charity table in &'s Town of Horse bank branch. And today's grauniad. And library book to finish. And extra hour to not dash off in dark in demain matin, as clocks recule at 2 bells.

    3. A wonderful farewell to one of Lions' and English rugby's magnificent, matchless greats, Captain of Lions, Captain of England - and a mischievous, glorious Dad, for whom Never Give Up and Try, Try, Try Again held for rugby and Life. Youngest ever Head of RFU. Head of the Sports Council. Head of Sport for All, about which he was passionate. & was already attending, was asked to assist. A privilege. 2 wonderful addresses from John Spencer and 'Piggy' Powell. International blazers and ties of school, club, county, country, nation were everywhere visible, said John Spencer. 'I'm looking at them', from pulpit. Tears, laughter, outbreaks of applause from all present. Church packed out. & was in single figures when first seeing India Rubber Man at Athletic Park, Wgtn, NZ with beloved Uncle and Grandfather. World Cup rugby ball amid flowers and shirt on coffin, just as for &'s Uncle[provinicial honours, rugby, basketball, cricket], caught & out.

    4. Dashed back, changed, unloaded from an OK Spits Thursday, then o.k. banking, then framer[again - a Daphne Reynolds glass broken this time]
    https://www.theguardian.com/news/2003/jan/24/guardianobituaries.arts

& has had 2 of her oils on paper for some years - 1 huge, 1 smaller. Discovered the smaller glass cracked top to bottom.

    5. Good talk wih framer, as always. More Dickie Jeeps stories:-), especially about his spell as a local restaurateur....:-)))

    6. Reflective time up on Heath, much needed, with free emporium cappuccino till light failed. Headed back, Suddenly remembered supposed to put in appearance at re-opening of venue, now restaurant. Some historic foundation stone-laying photos loaned via & for reproduction. Look good in situ. Much made of them. Noisy, happy, oldies, youngies, families and excited children and a great band of old rockers, real musicians playing great stuff. Not regulars though, sadly. Will it last? Who knows?
Arrived by 21h, nursed 1 large red through 2+hrs, refused others Thankyou, which also doesn't mean I'm going or coming anywhere with you[3 of them, over the evening]..no....thankyou...NO, Thank You. Slipped away.

    7. All sat with &mood somewhat today. & hates dank+still+grey, which today was till late afternoon. Overnight laundry limp and damp on line, but pleasure came in putting it on drying rack in garden room tonight.

MHagster - I remember a red back spider on Neighbours, decades ago! It was on a blanket that they'd sat a baby on outside. (Daphne's?)

Just found it on YouTube! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfJHVSEX7HI

    Pleasures for today (Saturday)

    1) Not a bad sleep.

    2) Finished the district council job - hoorah! Took 12 hours in all and spent 5 hours today walking dropping off voting paperwork for about 100 households. No one swore at me today.

    3) During my "lunch break", went into the town centre where I was working and found bigger son a hoodie from the charity shop. He likes them from H and M best and it was one of theirs!

    4) Got some more sparklers and juice for....

    5) The bonfire party! It is held by second mother and father and we worked out we have made every year except one for all of the 40 years they have held them. Picked sons up from their father's so they could go. We used to live next door (semi detached house) so the 3 sons are a bit like brothers to me. The reason I went to the University I did is because the oldest went there and was always talking about it! So did his wife. And the 3rd son went too and shared a house with me. Anyway, we were talking about our sons and plans, and new degree level apprenticeships and it was all very interesting.

    6) In bed now, quite achey from all the walking today, and will watch Casualty just now.

Ampersand - just read your message, thank you. :-)

Again apologies for infrequent posting, somewhat insular behaviour over DM's illness means struggling, however

We have had several spectacular sunsets over the last few days, beauty of living in flat fenland.

Driving over the Gogs towards DB's house in Uni City the incredible colours of the Wandlebury trees, & will know the place.

The mild weather continues so no need for coat when walking the girls, little Tilly diving into a pile of leaves and emerging with a doggy grin on her face.

    Geraniums still outside and flowering.

Store of apples in my shed, no heart for preparing for the freezer so sorted and tucked away. Equine pal and his friends have enjoyed several bags of windfalls.

Having darling Mum over with us, much beloved tradition of cooking C cake together, equal proportions of brandy & tears went in bowl.

Just as I hoped normality was re-emerging, someone changed the clocks. Just not me.
I do like the doggerel &! Plus so much else of your generous, insightful, supportive wisdom!
Frith - supporting you to the hilt. All will be well, eventually, as you have lived & proved & shown your lads. Meantime, all the best of luck with the tablets.
mhagster - glad the "only 8 hours" are done, and thinking of you all.
purple kitten - mine hates supermarkets entirely, but I am allowed to teach (& bribe) the young otherwise. Stalking YS goods is a skill I must add to the curriculum!
Mrs LW - 67 plants? You remind me (in splendid ways) of an Aunt who was Keble-Martin on two feet & thus her son-in-law suggested she was essential to the honeymoon in the Alps as how else would they know what beautiful flowers they were loking at? So all 3 went!
BoP - I'm not sure who is the luckier, you to have BoPsie or her to have you. Thank you for the 69 reminder!
Skint - I do love a pilchard, myself. Having googled how to spatchcock, am awed & intrigued. Certainly joining my vocabulary of warnings - "Wrong rope & you'll be ..." - the young can google things at the drop of a phone, so this will definitely catch their imagination!
Mila - delighted you have a better than hoped for skylight & hoping by now a better wall. "It can be fun and it can be taxing>>>all in the same day." Oh yes. In part why I scout.

Forgive me, all others, but my cup of tea is wearing off & There Are Noises Off.

ETA LaineyT, my mother holds tears add a special something to a recipe. I reckon they're an overflow of love, m'self.

    OS pleasures recently
New B&M opened - took mother-in-law on a recce! [Absolutely heaving with other curious folk, & several who decided to get a jump on the Christmas shopping, but still had the good stuff!]

Still working on minion training - but the 17 yo trotted off to get still more bags with barely a cheep. He is the unexpectedly proud owner of a "rustler burger" to experiment with/on. (It was significantly cheaper than an previous experiment of alligator burger.) [He liked it.]

Longmire season five! Menfolk hunkered around TV, cheering. I think I can putter off to Birmingham *almost* unnoticed. [Pretty much.]

Glorious homemade Chinese meal - I hogged the veggies & had a bit of meat while the chaps wolfed noodles & everything else!

Grey haired lady on the train has her hair up in a netted bun that looks like one large pebble veined with quartz steaks - stunningly lovely, taking copious mental notes!

Rich Hall on the American Presidential Election, firmly refusing the "low hanging fruit" & deftly skewering many other targets. When feeling a bit isolated, he's a very welcome pal-on-the-radio.

Pleasure will come once Final Presentation complete. Right now, am one short step away from gibbering. Most of the audience will be sympathetic colleagues awaiting their turn. Fingers crossed! [Done, & I am assured, competently. So much so I am to get a contract & Even money! (We're talking ha'pennies, but to be thusly recognised is Awesome!)]

Rattling along on the train I hear a phrase "reboot the router" - someone using my kind of language after a week learning an entirely different one!

B&M exchanged fitness tracker for me despite lack of receipt as could show date started using on app!

The eschewing is working. Even surrounded by opportunity, I only fell off the wagon one evening on a week long training course! This is in part due to logging Every meal & snack & drink & initially letting the numbers land as they wished (strewth!) & then eschewing.

Chinese supermarkets have beef jerky at lower prices & more interesting flavours than the usual suspects. [If I must reside (temporarily) in Chinatown, let my family benefit from the experience too!]

Sandi being rightly stern on the *differences* between Denmark & Norway... I do love QI.

Sorted new supplier. Big MS grin as just how easy it is getting & also at how familiar I am becoming with it.

Wheee! Low ropes, leap of faith & crate stacking - I have the theory for all three & some practice at it! Happy scout times. [Not-as-young-as-I-was aching muscles this morning but the "Again, again!" of small Test Child (fellow 'prentice Instructor's grandson) meant we All got a go in all roles as well as enjoying the delight!]

Bumped into Emily Dickinson's Much Madness is divinest Sense in an Fb thing on bias (I have some odd feeds) and thought it worth foozling the clocks change for.

Great big hugs & tender blessings to all who have need thereof, believe there is a glorious sunrise behind the fog & you're probably right & when feeling down, count your blessings. If you can't make it onto two hands, reread this thread!

...smaller son has Aspergers and keeps saying "alcoholic" to bigger son. I think that phrase was shouted ooo, a thousand times while we were on our holiday!

Sorry Frith had a :rotfl: reading this. Seriously though Ampersand has eloquently said what I meant :D

PK - glad you are feeling better

DfV - was surprised how easy it is to spatchcock a chicken and even with my dodgy hands just a sharp pair of kitchen scissors. It cooks much quicker too. I cut all my meat with scissors as I find it difficult to hold a knife with sufficient pressure.

MHags - glad work is over for you for a while - wonder if you will go back !?!

Lainey (((hugs))) to you and your DM. No apologies necessary here -post when you feel like it x

BoP - good luck for starting new job next week (unless I have totally misunderstood your posts which is highly likely :o )

    Pleasures for Saturday

    1. got up to see DS when he came in from night shift at 7.30am and had a cuppa with him and porridge for brekkie

    2. grey/still day but still washed DS work shirts and hung out on line - totally still day no wind but still they got hung in the fresh air - finished drying on clothes airers indoors

    3. walked to co-op picked up a cauli 69p and 3 pack large onions 75p- I have been picking up bits and pieces of shopping from them whilst I have been unable to drive following my operation and have been pleasantly surprised at how their prices on some basic groceries have come down
eg Half a dozen free range eggs 99p, 4 pints milk £1, mushrooms 69p, washing up liquid 75p and some good offers like cath city cheese mature cheddar half price £2.25 & Maris piper potatoes were YS half price at 84p (past their sell by date :rotfl:) and even fresh chicken breasts 450g £3.49 bought on offer 2 for £6 making it 900g. Will be back to Aldi on Monday though as they are still cheaper for a lot of other items

    4. DS didn't have to go to work until 10pm due to clocks going back so we had dinner together - I fancied a takeaway but ended up having leftover chicken, stir fry veg with noodles chilli soy garlic & ginger from store cupboard - he had chilli from freezer with cauliflower rice (he is low carbing again)

    5. caught up on some recorded TV and did some crossword puzzles.

    Have a good Sunday everyone

Kittikins - hope all is well with you x

  • Skint, testing was tedious but I got it right thirst time!

5 The home made cheese on toasts was eaten last eve, with the dynamite mushrooms. Wobbleades were consumed as a Hitchcock comedy was played in full. Mr and Mrs Smith. Excellent and I guess you missed it!

4 Turn away now if you keep chickens! Now that is your entertainment sore ted. BoP this morning, after a thoroughly mega fest of beasts yesterday, this morning had proper foods again. This time it was dippy eggs with real butter and marmite soldiers. Tea was drunk and Blackcurrant Jam on hot buttered toast. Rubs Tuim!

3 Just bin to the emporium of w8rs. Was on punter watch and it was not long before Mrs Can't cook appeared with her ready veg for the nuke machine, ready roasted chicken and the ready with batter. And nuke desserts of sugar enfuelled nothings and Aunt Bassies ready mix foam custard. All for £79, and after discount, £79! She never even got a free paper. BoP used BoPsie card, as well as his, and managed to get all next weeks food and things for £35.96, including two free papers, and discounts of £8.95. No wander emporium T forgot to write before half term. Our points there are around the 200 mark! Should have enough for a packet of cocoa in December then!

2 Day BoP is making smoked Grimsby haddock, non Icelandic Chips and proper real mushy peas! Leek and Tattie soup and Fresh fruit salad with ice cream. Tum will be rubbed!

Read it, now get out and get on!
  • 1) Carving a home grown pumpkin for Halloween tomorrow!

    2) Sharing a giggle with DD1 who was buying alcohol for a Christmas present and got IDd again! estimate of her age was 23 at the most from several staff who were arguing the toss and then she produced her passport from her bag and showed them she is really 38! Oh my word!!!

    3) Just been for a lovely walk across the common with He Who Knows and enjoyed the afternoon sunshine, the autumn leaves and met a very enthusiastic little Dachshund who wanted to say hello!

    4) Cornish pasties from Cornwall for supper tonight, part of a present from Cookies folks for looking after her for the week!

    5) Autumn leaves and trees and bushes covered with fruits, it's beautiful.
  • Mrs LW Wow good on your DD1, I can see it would get frustrating after a while.

1.DH and I spent the entire day painting our fence, taking fence panels out etc. Tomorrow we will get another tin to do a second coat it looks so much better, it was is lot of work though as we did the neighbours side as well as ours, as the overlap would leave runs otherwise but in effect it more than doubled the time and paint. I’ve searched for offers on the paint but no joy and more over no local stock not so handily.

2.The paint and aches and pains washed away and calmed in an early hot bath.

3.It felt luxurious to be nigh on ready for bed before dinner..

4.Dinner was gammon and pots from yesterday’s Mr T.

5.Some good TV for a pleasant change.
