MrsLW your Halloween sounds lovely. It used to be like that here when DS was little, but has become too much for me to participate. There are large groups of kids some 10+ come to the door from about 4.30 and the last time I did it people were still knocking at 9.45pm. In the end I had to put a note on the door saying I had run out of sweets and I started out with about 50 !
This year I will be turning out all the lights and sitting in the kitchen at the back of the house - we have armchairs and a tv so I will not be hiding in the dark... just hiding out the back
& and Frith hope you are both ok and soon on the mend.
Feeling a little better today thankfully - have been relaxing for most of the day but there are some pleasures
1. lovely sunny day
2. managed to wash towels and DS's work clothes and dried on the line outside
3. oven fish and chips for lunch
4. friend came round to make sure I was ok and brought me some green beans from her allotment - already sliced and frozen so put straight in freezer
5. naughty but very nice takeaway (free delivery) for dinner. Piri-piri chicken and halloumi wrap with salad and roasted veg was not MSE but was delish ... it was delivered by one of the few places that do not charge for delivery and I paid cash so no debit/credit card surcharge AND I resisted the chocolate brownie and ice cream dessert so not as naughty as it could have been0% credit card £1360 & 0% Car Loan £7500 ~ paid in full JAN 2020 = NOW DEBT FREE 🤗

We sometimes get large groups of older kids as the evening wears on but last year a couple of girls hung back and didn't try for sweets so I called out and asked them why? and they said 'Oh it wouldn't be fair because we came round with some other friends an hour ago, we've already had one of your cakes!' bless them, they got given some chocolate instead but they're not all bad and just out to grab what they can some of them are thoughtful and I was touched by their consideration.0

Oh I agree don't get me wrong I've never had any trouble but I just cant manage to get up and down to the door every 5 minutes this year ! All this talk of Hallowe'en has had me thinking. I live far too close to the school in which I teach and we have our PCSO giving a stranger danger talk - only go to houses where you've pre-arranged etc. I've told my class, under no uncertain terms, that I don't have sweets in my house (and if I do they'd soon be in my tummy!!) and if they knock on the door it won't be opened! However, it turns out that I'll be out on 31st October, so problem of me being Scrooge is sorted!! :rotfl:
Pleasures for the last few days:
1) Spent a couple of days with my parents. This included seeing my dementia riddled grandmother in her care home - I held her hand the whole time and she tried to crush my fingers. She hasn't known me for the last 4 years, but thankfully she still knows my father. The other ladies in her particular sitting room (they do swap them around now and then!) were a hoot and obviously enjoy the company of everyone. The staff in the home are all fantastic. They do an amazing job.
2) Whilst with my parents, I accompanied my mum to her art history class. I was the youngest there by 30 years, but really interesting talking about "The Glasgow Boys". I even chipped in with a bit of discussion! My class fee was waived by the tutor as she's known me for so long. Very kind of her, but the last time I went was 10 years ago... hopefully I won't have to wait another 10 years for a class.
3) Went with DH to London for afternoon tea. Delicious. He has been able to do a bit of overtime, so we had today as a treat.
4) Because of number 3, I've been asked to write a blog post for an afternoon tea website - only for fun! No payment, other than knowing that some people might read my ramblings.
5) Linked to number 1, 2, 3 - spending time with DH and family. Normally we're so busy with work or our "own" lives that we don't take enough time to be with each other, so this has been precious.Sealed Pot Challenge #021 #8 975.71 #9 £881.44 #10 £961.13 #11 £782.13 #12 £741.83 #13 £2135.22 #14 £895.53 #15 £1240.40 #16 £1805.87 #17 £1820.01 declared0 -
Hi everyone
I hope you don't mind me popping by. I normally just lurk but thought I'd join in tonight if that's ok.
We go to the USA quite often and discovered quite by chance when we were over there for Halloween that if you don't turn on an outside lamp the children don't call. We found this out when we ended up with loads of sweets left. Quite a good idea I think.

Skint: What a rough time, and thank goodness for the NHS. Hope you start to feel better soon. Is it your thyroid they've removed?
I’ve been poorly for a couple of days but as of last night it touch wood has run its hopefully run its course.
1. I started today to try and catch up on myself, clean bedding on, airing the bedroom, and cleaning up.
2. Tidied clothes away, started on the washing loads.
3. Started on trying to get some green weed out of the pond, all be it very slowly.
4. Porridge this afternoon was very welcome, tried plain chicken wraps tonight but stomach isn’t happy.
5. I have 2 interviews on Monday, not a great plan, but there wasn’t much choice, I have a really bad gut feeling about them which may sound daft and I am trying to ignore but there are a lot of things that don’t make sense and my gut says don’t go so trying to ignore it at the moment.0 -

My pleasures:
(1) Cooked a lovely full English breakfast this morning, a very nice treat. Also this means we haven't wanted lunch today so it's freed up more time for Other Things.
(2) Enjoyed tidying the greenhouses and polytunnel. I'm still harvesting tomatoes galore so will make a butternut squash and tomato risotto for supper tomorrow or Tuesday.
(3) Harvested lots of gorgeously sweet juicy yellow autumn-fruiting raspberries to add to tomorrow's breakfast granola.
(4) Have decided to throw a Halloween party at work on Friday afternoon for all the scientists, students and postdocs I work with. They are all super excited about this, so I've just spent a very pleasant half an hour browsing Pinterest for ideas. Lovely.
(5) Rufus continues to be the most excellent chap.0 -
1) Walking Cookie in the sunshine this afternoon in whirling leaves falling from the trees and watching a buzzard spiralling on thermals and listening to its 'Kehaaaa' call as it slowly got smaller as it ascended.
2) Hearing that DD1 and the school trip are finally at their Hotel in Paris despite all the railways attempts to stop them!!!
3) Seeing a lady in the village who lost Dockys friend Diesel who was a dear old venerable Weimaraner just after we lost Docky walking THE most handsome Weimaraner dog I've ever seen. Goodness he's chocolate box material and he is MILO and 22 months old, is a rescue dog and has been with his new mum for 3 weeks. Mum was smiling again, made my day!
4) The smell of our Roast Pork supper cooking in the kitchen, yummy!
5) Reduced plums in the Co Op this morning down to 59p a pack of 8 so I got two and one is under a crumble topping in the oven right now. The other one isn't quite ripe so that will be under a crumble topping next week!0
