Hello all, back from India. Like VJsmum went business class (no bar on the plane but very pleasant none the less). And likewise no jetlag. Got to India 12 noon Thursday and first meeting at 1 - now i see why people go business class!
Votre toast, je peux vous le rendre, sparrer
hugs frith
As suspected, not much time or access for internet, but here's a few memories before they fade into work.
1) business class. was my first time and made the most of it and the lounges. Glasgow to Dubai then Dubai to Chennai. Fab food and great company
2) due to lack of internet i got through 2 books - 5 people you meet in heaven and a murder book set in a Swan Song, a whodunnit set in an opera company doing die meistersinger
3) the college we went to was amazing. they've built a hospital in Puducherry with the medical, dental and nursing school. The majority of the patients get free treatment, and they have a bus converted into a mobile clinic. in the back is a dental chair with satellite link back to the dental college. They're doing an oral cancer campaign at the moment (chewing niccotine with lime is very popular in the villages and awful for oral cancer). so they go to a village and offer free consultations. The doctor on board does an initial check-up and if he or she spots anything concerning takes a photograph and emails to the consultant. They discuss over the internet using webcam, but the higher resolution is needed from the camera for the detailed pictures. I teach telemedicine on my course and was fab to see it in action.
4) although we were working most of the time (only there from Thurs noon to Sunday morning) they did squeeze in a visit to one temple.
5) at one meal i was sat next to the doc who runs the rural clinic we visited. he had a fantastic singing voice and treated us to an impromptu concert after the meal (that was the night we ate outside - turns out teh mozzies found my blood exotic and tasty - 62 bites on the left leg and 35 on the right!!!)
6) have planted a tree in a tree planting ceremony (we were treated like royalty!)
7) also visited a yoga therapy class and a musical therapy class. We were asked to join in the latter but, pleased to say, not the former.
8) they are also very proud of their transgender clinic, the first in India. I mentioned my transgender husband, and the next day they introduced me to one of the transwomen who first attended the clinic and now works there. They employ 3 transwomen which is amazing as normally they're very much outcast from society.
9) saturday evening stayed at a very nice hotel in Chennai and had an indian banquet with the chairman. we let him choose and it was lish :P
10) home safely at about 9. have seen all the children and mum. computer systems all down at work (only went in this afternoon cos there was an important meeting) so can't mark even in dundee. you can imagine how sad i am vjsmum ;-)MrsSD declutter medals 2023 🏅🏅🏅⭐⭐ 2025

Busy old day in work and at home and trying to get to bed at a sensible hour to sort my sleep pattern out! so must be quick or I will have the wrath of & to face:eek: (shhh don't tell her I'm here!)
1. Got a 'thank you' from one my staff in work that means the world - made me proud, happy, sad and humbled with 2 little words!!
2. Words can't express how thankful I am to be me today! (and no amount of money can buy that!!)
3. Delicious if a little strange fish pie made with random bits of fish and veg that were lurking in my freezer - even have some left for work later in the week!
4. My friend who was house/dog/cat/bunny sitting at the weekend replaces a pack of cheap chocy biccies (Al*I) with posh brand ones which are delicious!!! Don't normally eat biccies but could resist and now know what nice ones taste like will definitely not be buying them (or I will eat them all!) - she didn't need to replace anything!!!! so she will be get a good telling off for that!
5. My best friend is coming home for America in November for 2 whole weeks!!! I have some planning to do so I can spend maximum time with her without breaking the bank - but something to look forward to and not seen her for 5 years so lots of catching up to do!!!!
Loads more I'm sure but need to run (and hide!) before & catches me!0 -
Dundeedoll - your trip sounds amazing! and '5 People You Meet in Heaven' is amazing - have you read 'Tuesdays with Morrie' - my personal favourite Mitch Albom0

Long and busy day so will catch up with posts tomorrow
1. DGD2 car broke down, went to her town 15 miles away to help her out with repair costs. We shopped around and saved over £140 on the first quote. She was impressed, I'll have to teach her how to haggle
2.friends phoned to ask if they could visit, gave me 20 minutes notice! The house was cleaned by a whirling dervish
3. said friends stayed for a belated Burns lunch, was going to have it last night but the haggis was still frozen. Plenty to go round and enjoyed by all
4. went swimming with three friends this evening. Pleased I have membership, they had to pay more than double my entrance fee. Made a change from Seniors morning when there are lots of grey heads bobbing up and down like baby seals :rotfl:
5. yellow thing all day. Keep feeding the meter!
Sweet dreams0 -
Evening all
Lovely stories of travels. Thank you
Five pleasures for recently:
1. DS1 made me laugh this evening. He'd been in search of the hidden biscuits and found them. He knew I must have only put half the packet in with yesterday's packed lunches so the missing half had to be somewhere. He found me to ask if he could help himself to more - it was so honest I couldn't say no!
2. Had another bit of a health scare and ended up with a load more tests - all clear and nothing to worry about so I'm very relieved.
3. The wood that I've now reached in the woodpile is smelling fantastic when it's burning, strong hint of incense. Wish I knew what it was.
4. The fault lights had reappeared on my car and so the fuel system has now been cleaned. It's driving so much better and the fuel consumption has improved again so I think it was worth getting it sorted despite having to throw some money at it. Fingers crossed that it did the trick.
5. Baked spuds with mackerel and sweetcorn, carrots and broccoli for supper. V tasty.
Off to make a hottie.
Sweet dreams

Third and final attempt ...'blocked'

Afternoon all
A definite non pleasure of this trip is hotel muzak  really getting on my Bristols it is(terrible problem to have i know
)
Broomstick - glad you have the all clear
DD - trip sounds fab. As does the transgender clinic. Nice to seem some progression, no? They were fortunate to have your insight, too.
Pleasures
1. Actually doing proper work, there have been meetings where i have been trying to get up to speed with what my job will involve, but today i had work within my comfort zone. It was a relief and very useful
2. walking to work in sunshine through the park. Alone, having been with people most of the waking time.
3. Yummy curry in Indian sector
4. Singapore Sling in RAFFLES!:T:D Behaving like a tourist (which i guess is what i was!). Singaporean colleague though discovered she was more allergic to alcohol than she thought and collapsed a while later - the pleasure is that she is OK.
5. Street food in a little market area - satay and baby octopus on sticks :rotfl:
Working in hotel lounge at the moment, as the pool is too distracting - shame i know
5.I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
VickyA - a 'found' can of G&T is a lovely thought! Hurrah Saturday pub lunch! Well done wringing the exhibition dry of all you wanted... Very well done going out without phones. Feel no guilt at wedding gifts - they *chose* to spend that on you. Absolutely right to prepare car before driving!
Frith - hurrah baby is lovely & hoping sister is recovering. Will put blood donor plea on noticeboard. Hurrah that school secretary, and awww brother coming paternal. Rightly!
sparrer - I venture out only when required. Lancashire not presently icy just wet. Hurrah swimming! So proud of you! Yippee student price haircut & ooh family rock ready to roll! Would you kindly share the secrets of the chicken and veg soup? Awed by sound of your garden, but have heard the work that sustains it. Real friends should not notice housework at 20 minutes notice.
Broomstick - you wrestling With Bug too? Hurrah duck (duct?) tape repairs to Rotaire! Love DS1 truffling for biscuits & then asking! Please stay healthy!
mhagster - at least newgirl learned to help close. Spiders everywhere EEEEP! DD1 has flattering ID photo? How on earth?! Son, broom, pool, scooter, pup - all the classic ingredients for a rousing laugh. Irn Bru! 'blocked'? Fiend website!
judi - well done being organised for wedding trip! Good times in Scotland with family & Reverend Mother (as in vows or family speak?!) Still frankly intrigued by Sunday Brunch but guess L&R? 2 weeks in November without breaking bank? Eng Heritage or Nat Trust membership on tesco or nectar points & mop up the really ancient architecture & associated teashops?
mandaguin - colouring book? Can't say a word, I like a good Murder myself. DIY Spanish? Golly.
Purple Kitten - *blast* middle party recruiters. Hoping TooIdealHome dishwasher merges cooperatively with yours! All best with job, rousing cheers for sensible actions by DH & congratulations on post 30K! Love the idea of taking ferrets for a walk & even to the pub.
Tealady - well done OH & +1 for Paris. Phew successful cataract operation on mum - huge relief!
BoP - any correlation between intake of wobbleade and alignment of underpants? Bar guns a good thing!
Skint yet Again - Hurrah that DS & hoping you've had an excellent long weekend! Car tyres relocated, & very cannily shopped for new gloves.
ampersand - candle lit for neighbour & husband who "simply didn't wake". Love the unexpected real names - can such be a Political Asset? Birdwatch! Betelgeuse the first 'planet' name we were taught, mostly as Dad loved watching our faces as he explained its spelling. *Love* A's lad's prep."losing with dignity ... was very hard" - if that does not merit an A grade for integrity & honesty, his staff need a chat.
VJsmum - you're on the razzle in Singapore while OH cleans up after builders... Glad the meetings going well so far! "world's largest aquarium" - covet! The Drink in The Bar. Back to your marking!
Rainy-Days - welcome! Congratulations sorting the EB collection but leave a modest gap so DH knows what to get for birthday/wedding anniversary etc?! Need not be a second 6 pint jug...
Kittikins - bother this trapped nerve pain but well done on literacy planning & Congratulations DD on trip to H of Parliament (I hope?) for debating workshop!
DundeeDoll - peel off those pressure socks & tell all. Blimey, that's telemedicine with a point! Absolutely right to get the local knowledge to choose the banquet - how else will you know what are the genuine delicacies & what are strictly tourist temptations?! Computers down so you can't mark - genius scheming!
OS Pleasures in the last few days
Listening to husband & son looking at a tool website & cheerfully abusing the various multifunction items. Young un's grasp of practical engineering impressive, even if their language is deplorable. Very MS though - "that is *just* to empty wallets"....
Son interviewed local MP at school today. He "had a man with him" Security, we queried? "Nah, they're all in London today" (Not bad analysis given the number of countries meeting!) Claimed he'd vote UKIP & let the MP whitter for several minutes before "it was a joke". Some days I could almost feel sorry for a politician. Almost.
Listening to the Dawn Chorus despite the snow & dark. Cheerful, noisy, affirming. Heard from a house otherwise cold & silent in sleep, it's reassuring.
Cheerful upbraiding of colleague who came in for Important Meeting (it was) with her cold. Four of us are now suffering, with some even taking leave... The counting sick days policy seems a bit harsh when this is the fallout.
OS pleasure that tea, paracetamol & harsh language do help manage this variant of lurgy. (My default cure for most ills.) One fellow sufferer grumbled that he'd mind less if *he* sounded like a Wiemar Republic sensation. I croaked he certainly had the better legs & we continued in amity.
Having listened to several variants on the "What!?" of new software installing, I was able to help some sufferers by encouraging them to "let the machines cook on slow" while they helped an imminent quiz veteran sharpen his game...
As we plied shovels to clear the path up to the Scout hut, we were delighted to see a real live wild rabbit lollop out to examine what the fuss was about. Several unsuccessful photos later, just why the hut is called The Warren is delightfully clear.
The nice trader who sold us some really glorious leather working tools has just sent a message saying he's found the punctuation marks, if we're interested. We can now be leather working grammar fiends! As well as no longer having to worry about belts & pouches going missing.
Watching a son boogieing along to a YouTube video under headphones. Can I *help* it if son thinks I caught this charming moment on my phone?
"Fluffy hair. Truly the dumbest superpower anywhere. The girls like it though." Poor son...
Colleague knows my weaknesses. Pointed me towards the cornelissen website. Amidst the cold wet black & white, that range of colour is a tonic! Phew all plastic securely locked at home!
Dodgy employees, questionable expenses - really does it matter which Party an M(E)P belongs to? (Sons opine Farage resembles Dominar Rygel from Farscape...)
"The valiant never taste of death but once" - hm. Strikes me the sheer stubborn can spit out a taste & keep on.
Jupiter Ascending - family saw the trailer & has *promptly* set up a five way sweep as to how soon Sean Bean dies. (Well, he does have form for being killed off...) I've the penultimate fifth.
Sage advice heard - "stop down, sit up and think" - photographing the nuances of jacquard weaving clearly not an amateur job!
Hurrah for intra-NHS communication - half the results through to one of two consultants but that half faxed in less time than it took to get a brew. Nightmare in skull terror not completely dispelled but shortly, we hope.
Child handed me a pillow with concealed hot water bottle. Still croaking thankyous at whisper as dropped asleep.
Great big hugs to all who need them, blood & tears & regular meals & sleep to all who have need & given the average temperature is under 8, I think you are *allowed* to put the heating on.0 -
Pleasures for yesterday (Monday)
1) Not a bad sleep.
2) Went to town to have a cup of tea with school friend. Her twin had her 3rd child on Sunday night! So we could compare photos. Twin also had a haemorrhage (there's a lot of it about!)
3) Popped to National Trust place on way to visit sister.
4) Allowed to visit! Birth story to end all birth stories but everyone looked well.
5) Tidied up after having my room replastered. This took hours and 3 change of mop heads on the steam mop. :-/
6) Watched Celebrity Big Brother (guilty pleasure)
7) Bigger son had me in stitches regaling tales of school. The best was a teacher was on supply in his history room and have the class "could smell sick". The teacher said they couldn't, they said they could etc. Cue teacher eventually finding old mug of soup on a windowsill, giving it a big sniff then having to hang out of the window to recover! He then took the mug and threw it out of the window!!0 -
Evening all - remember me?
I'm sorry I haven't been around for a while - life keeps getting in the way and, before I know it, another week has gone past without me coming on to the 5OSP thread. My New Year's resolution was to start posting on here again - it's a bit late, but I got there eventually!
So, 5 for today:
1) A committee that I had reluctantly agreed to play minutes secretary to (it's a job I hate) decided that no-one else wanted to be there either, and it was all over within an hour. :j
2) Nice nurse at the local vet made an appointment for Isis to be checked out tomorrow, to try and sort out the upset tum that's been bothering her for the past week or so.
3) Hearing from some online friends in America who had survived the snow storm unscathed.
4) An email to say I have won another competition - an iPad! :j:j:j
5) Planning a naughty but oh-so-nice dinner of hot dogs with a glass or two of red wine.
I hope everyone's OK and there have been no major disasters in my absence.Back after a very long break!0
